In this video I'll show you how to re-handle a chisel, specifically a Japanese chisel, with some basic wood turning. This chisel is my favorite in my arsenal and has been a staple on the channel for a number of videos. It needed some TLC that required me to remove the old chisel handle, which was crafted by myself from Australian Pine. So after I got it back from the blacksmith I decided to opt to spin up another handle out of extra curly white oak I had laying about. Re-handling a Japanese chisel does take a little extra thought as opposed to their western counterparts. Japanese chisels are tricky because they are built with hybrid construction in mind. They're a cross between a tang chisel and a socket chisel which makes fitting extra tricky. In this video, you'll see how I accommodated for the tang while still being able to mount it on the lathe and quickly fix up this simple handle. I give a very basic visual demonstration of how to turn a handle for a chisel and inevitably how to handle a chisel with a tang. After a couple sharpens, you can see that this re-handled paring chisel is good to go back in service. Replacing a chisel handle has never been easier,. For more information on this build, head over to my website or check out the article on Instructables. Thanks for watching!

You handled that well.
Oh I see what you did there...
Nicely done. Thanks!
Thank you jerry!
Nice!
Thank you sir!
I dig it!

I do find turning videos a little hard to watch, but I can definitely appreciate the details and you showed just the right amount of turning to keep me interested. The finished product looks amazing and it’s interesting to see how that chisel works; I thought it was just a socket design like the Stanley and Lie-Nielsen, but to see it has a tang too makes it look even more of a challenge. Nice work, Chris 👍
Oh, and are those Shapton glass stones you use at the end? 🤔
Thank you! And yes those are the shapton glass backs.
That came out awesome and always a blast watching your process bud! Even if there was what you're calling a "mistake" in the edit haha
Haha some sort of glitch in the rendering. Who knows. But whatever I’m leaving it.
@@CowDogCraftWorks Roll with it for sure!
It was on purpose. That tip is NSFW.
I'm surprised you could handle that!
I dunno man. I think @parillaworks got you beat.
@@CowDogCraftWorks i didn't say it was handled well😉
That’s why he’s got you beat.
@@CowDogCraftWorks i see I'm now getting the shaft
That’s on my second channel
