  • The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is a unique tree with an interesting story. It is considered a living fossil, and was thought to be extinct until it was discovered growing in China in the 1940s. This grove at the @morrisarboretum is spectacular! The trees were planting in 1953 and are already over 100ft tall. #dawnredwood #trees #tree #baldcypress #forest #urbanforestry #philly #philadelphia #metasequoia

Never seen a Dawn Redwood but I love the trunk shape. Being next to a Giant Sequoia for the first time changed my life. Just makes you realize how small we are amongst so many giants like that. Awe inspiring

I’ve lived around giant coastal redwoods my entire life and know how they can survive fire, flood and drought. But it’s still so amazing to see it touches people in other parts of the country with their majesty. Hello from the avenue of the giants locale!

There are a few giant sequoia growing up in Northern lower peninsula of Michigan near Manistee, at lake bluff arboretum. Eight of them were planted in 1948 and three survived. The tallest one is a bit over 100 ft.

Hello Andrew, Dawn Redwoods are very similar to Bald Cypress trees, but they are not identical and are actually quite distinct from each other, once you can appreciate the differences. If you live in an appropriate hardiness zone, I say PLANT THE METASEQUOIA! They are both beautiful, as is the Larch, but there is something indescribable about M. glyptostroboides. I think it might be the fact that it is everywhere in fossils, but thought to be extinct. There is a magical quality to that idea.

I love the Dawn Redwood! I have a one year old Dawn Redwood that I’m going to eventually train as a bonsai and (3) 6 month old seedlings that I’d love to grow in the ground one day! The round ball cone shape is quite cool as well! And bonus, they are fairly easy to germinate in a wet paper towel in a ziplock bag as well!

I have a smallish (~50ft) garden. One of my neighbours has a garden that runs at right-angles to mine (at the back of mine)
He planted a Dawn Redwood alongside my garden about 4ft from the fence boundary about 20years ago.
The tree is now about 60ft tall, has destroyed the fence, and casts shade up the entire length of my garden.
It's a beautiful tree, but eventually it'll have to come down.
People just don't think what they're doing when they plant trees.

My original aquaintance with Dawn Redwoods was at the Winterbourne Botanical Gardens at Birmingham University UK. About 5 years ago I planted two of them having discovered saplings on sale locally. Unfortunately one of them died due to drought, being planted in the wrong location, however the other has survived and prospered and is now at least 15 feet tall having grown faster than it's cousin the giant sequoia I planted around the same time. I replaced the lost Dawn Redwood with another one last year which has survived the winter and is now bursting into leaf.

Do NOT plant those dang bald cypress just anywhere. We had heard it was a wonderful lawn specimen, and it probably is if you just have average rainfall on flat ground. We live at the bottom of a hill and get water down the bottom of our terrace when it rains. No standing water, just run off in a rain shower. And we have cypress knees all over. The more moisture, the more knees. However, we DO have a dawn redwood, and it is just the biggest, most beautiful tree around, and the moisture doesn’t faze it. Nice and an interesting trunk, beautiful form, strong root system that does NOT have knees. We planted our dawn redwood in 1988 and it is SO tall.!!! I’m in St. Louis, Missouri

It's not true that there are no Sequoia or Sequoiadendron in the eastern USA - perhaps in smaller numbers, but both have been re-introduced, just like Metasequoia.
We have all three genera growing here in Australia too - as I understand it, they're likewise all represented in our fossil record and have been re-introduced after an absence of probably millions of years.

Feed it fish hydrolysate. Its favorite food. Fungal growth will be stimulated from that food, and these trees feed from & support the fungi, and thrive. When Michorrizhae attach to their roots, they can connect to each other and build root strength. They have shallow roots and need the fungal network to help stand up strongly.
