I first heard this song several years ago. I heard it live, sung by a family of singers my mom knew. I wasn't really listening. I haven't always been the world's best listener. Back then I envisioned a lonely man, frozen in time in a remote location not everyone even knows about. A very romantic image, no? This time, though, I'm picking up on a different sort of romantic image, namely, a group of men on a crazy voyage they are hoping against hope to survive. Although the part at the end, that mentions wasting away while "frozen in this lonely grave," seems to indicate a strong possibility that they might indeed not survive.
Cold is the arctic sea Far are your arms from me Long will this winter be Frozen in Frobisher Bay Frozen in Frobisher Bay "One more whale," our captain cried "One more whale and well beat the ice." But the winter star was in the sky The sea's were rough the winds were high. Deep were the crashing waves That tore our whalers mast away Dark are these sunless days Waiting for the ice to break. Strange is a whaler's fate To be saved from the raging waves Only to waste away Frozen in this lonely grave.
Great lyrics mood subject. I wonder if they made it out. I wonder if they were ever found. I wonder how long they were o out there. The whole winter? Months? I wonder what the wind sounded like. The captain wanted one more. His greed got them but they all have needy families back home and they need to make the money. Maybe they had whale fat to burn and eat. Maybe they made it to spring when the ice breaks.

Sends a shiver down my spine!
Cold is the arctic sea
Far are your arms from me
Long will this winter be
Frozen in Frobisher Bay
Frozen in Frobisher Bay
"One more whale," our captain cried
"One more whale and well beat the ice."
But the winter star was in the sky
The sea's were rough the winds were high.
Deep were the crashing waves
That tore our whalers mast away
Dark are these sunless days
Waiting for the ice to break.
Strange is a whaler's fate
To be saved from the raging waves
Only to waste away
Frozen in this lonely grave.
I love the harmony! and James Gordon's voice too...
Thank you, I loved listening your singing of Frobisher Bay.
This song fills me with a strange sense of sadness
Nicely done!
Nice singing -- great song! I know that some folks pronounce 'arctic' as 'ART-IC' instead of 'ARC-TIC' but it always sounds wrong to me.
I'm showing this to my ensemble because we're singing this and we're having a spec of trouble with dynamics ad your them fantastically
im singing this in my choir right now :D
Beautiful version James.
I wish you guys would post more videos of your songs, I'd love to introduce you to friends here in the Pacific NW, without loaning out my CDs.
