For people elsewhere, and this is exponential by the distance to a US Canada Border Crossing, it was just crazy for anyone to beleive it, and far enough away (like more than 50 or 100 miles) it was just crazy to say it thinking anyone would buy the story. Usually it was NOT a girlfriend, but a chance encounter with a total slut when the family made a trip to Canada. Toronto was seen as better as it was regular tourist destination but so far away no one could ever check the story. Windsor was across the river, so some people may check the story. Back when I was young, phone companies published books with everyone's phone number and address.
Contrast in characters between Manny, Gloria and Jay makes for great banter. Jay is a no sense strong man and Gloria is an over protective mom because Manny is a social outcast that has mature interests.
This goes back to Usual Suspects where he's telling the story but reading it all off the board behind the cop, with the name being on the bottom of the cup Writers in comedy shows use the same idea for the fake boyfriend or girlfriend plot, the twist usually being they are real and called that Alex version was Teddy Keys with the items round the room being a coincidence, right up to the word Leave The Simpsons did it on the Hansel Gretel Halloween episode with the witches fake boyfriend George Cauldron, who of course walks in at the end
