      "guitarist Tommy Shaw's reported dislike of the song and direction of the group's concert performances - which, in keeping with the album's concept, featured bandmembers acting out certain roles - led him to leave the band at the completion of the "Kilroy" tour."
      "What that song did is it killed a whole lot of people's interest in our music," Young said
      "Young and Tommy Shaw would usually reference similar reasons when asked about moving on without DeYoung and this hit song. They didn’t like the direction of “Mr. Roboto,” Kilroy was a toxic experience they didn’t want to revisit, and creative differences with DeYoung were simply too much to handle."

    As a Styx fan I never understood the backlash from older Styx fans. It was a departure from their established sound, but I liked the change at the time, & still do.
    As for vocals - as great a singer as Tommy is, he possesses a more traditional Rock voice. Dennis is often regarded as Styx's definitive vocalist, possibley because his voice & style is more distinctive, as well as the fact that most of Styx's top 10 hits were written & sung by him. He also had tenure of course.

    While this did initially break up the band, they did reform in 1990 ( without Shaw). They had a huge hit Show Me The Way. Shaw returned to the band in the late 90's where the did their Return To Paradise Tour, which was also made into a PBS special. Their last album featuring both Shaw and DeYoung was ,1999's Brave New World. Tensions rose once again within the band and DeYoung was unceremoniously ousted from the group.

    This was Dennis DeYoung dragging the rest of Styx into his Broadway musical fantasy. It drove a wedge between them and alienated a lot of fans. It definitely grew on people over time but it was a bridge too far at the time for the Styx audience who tolerated his romantic songs but wanted more guitar rock.

      He was, also, completely egotistical and uncompromising in it (although: his "direction"/his intentions were, in-and-of-themselves: compromises/compromising (to begin with!)!).
      -I had some scant experience with Japanese, so:
      I often got laughs out of "singing back to" the song/people who were listening to the song:
      "Ie kekkodessu, Mr. Roboto" (or, as I preferred: "Mr. Blowboto"!😋😛).

    Mentioned this on another of your Styx reaction videos: Kilroy Was Here is the album Styx fans love to say they hate (but secretly love) - The 3 hits were this one "Mr. Roboto" "Don't Let It End" and "High Time" all sang by Dennis DeYoung. Tommy Shaw's best song on this album is "Just Get Through This Night" - but my favorite is "Haven't We Been Here Before" a true master Ballad where Tommy and Dennis sing together (was supposed to be a single - and video was even made for it - but then wasn't released as on).

I like his voice, but I also like Shaw's rock voice too. I also like that they are versatile. Dennis sings on Don't Let it End and Dessert Moon (two 🔥 songs)! This is just a fun song to sing. I'm not going to break this down, but if you Internet search "Kilroy was here" you will see how it fits into the theme of the song.

    For me; I love this song. This was my very first concert; which was done as a stage play. This was a great album and an amazing concert.
    As for who's singing; James gets the least attention, even though he has some great songs. Dennis and Tommy make up most of the songs on album.
    The heart of the song though is too much technology; which is why the syth sound was used. Dennis talks about a future we are now living in. Everyone on their phones, laptops, whatever, all pluged in and not paying attention to the real world around them.

    This song was a hit because it catered to the sound that was popular at the time, but for a lot of Styx fans it was too much change, too quickly. It may have been a good business decision at the time but it did a lot of long-term damage to the relationships within the band.

      It wasn't "a good business decision," either. ...despite what some record executive of the day might have told you/will, still, tell you, now: THIS "sound" was, already, over.
      Done with. ANY kid on the street either NEVER thought it was "hip" or knew it was over, by this point (effectively).
      ...their parents and single-digit age younger sisters or brothers, MIGHT have thought it was (mildly so ...briefly....) ...but, outside of that??: No.
      -Also: this was Dennis DeYoung taking his desire to do "musical theatre:9or some form of popular music associated, directly, with THAT!) to "the Nth degree," ...To make the band (which was, itself, collapsing, already, by this point) ascribe to that notion.
      It failed (deservedly so!).

    I owned a Vending machine business back then. I went to a trade show in Japan (fyi, the Japanese are the KINGS of Vending...absolute freaks!! You can buy...wait for it...women's used panties in a VM in Japan. Freaks!!). Anyway, this song was HUGE at the time. They played it a lot at the trade show.

    To understand the critics you'd have to have listed to Styx's earlier music fist. It was always more rock and rollin'. They had great success with their first concept album called Paradise Theater. Kilroy Was Here was it's follow up and people (including the other band mates) thought this was just too cheesy. It caused a lot of animosity among them.

    I don't know how much Styx you've listened to since you have posted these videos, but there's one song you REALLY have to listen to, especially with headphones on. It's not necessarily one of their best songs. It's good, but just not a hit or anything that they play on the radio. It's called Mother Dear. It will give you one of the trippiest sensations listening to it with headphones on. They engineered the sound in a way that makes it feel like the music is travelling back and forth through your head. I swear, you will actually get the feeling that it's moving RIGHT THROUGH YOUR FREAKIN HEAD. It is so cool.

    Styx is not Styx without Dennis DeYoung, a founding member of the band. They forced him out because they thought he was becoming too avant garde and experimental and theatrical and less rock 'n' roll (with "Mr. Roboto" being a prime example of his creativity and slight weirdness). I highly recommend reacting to these songs written by Dennis DeYoung that feature him on lead vocals: "Come Sail Away" (the longer album version in which there is a middle section with synthesizers that sound like dolphins and whales) and "Lady."

    B.T.W.: It *should* interest you that: "Kilroy was here" was an old "catchphrase"/"meme" (before "meme" meant the types of things it does, TODAY!) -a graffiti tag; which, basically, came to represent "Allied troops" during WW II.
    Often used to equivocate the idea that "American troops have been here"
    (and of unknown origin) ...but found all across the eastern front; generally left by U.S. troops....).
    It was, very much, out of use and not recognized by most youth at the time that it was appropriated and attempted to be mutated for this album project. (the mid.-ish 1980s)
    ...most teens had no idea what it was or that it had existed/been used, previously.
    ...however: the phrase "Kilroy was here" HAD been used/shown-up in different contexts, in: movies, comic books, fiction short stories or novels, SINCE WW II, so: there were, of course, a fair number of people who recognized it (even if they had no, personal, connection to it -or knowledge ABOUT it).
    I have ZERO idea what "Kilroy" was supposed to imply WITHIN the context of this album, etc. absolutely NONE! ...except, perhaps, that: it was a war reference and a "turning back to the past" ...and that the Styx album refereed to/implied (at least) war as well as: a(n at least, SEEMING!) preference for "the past" or "past mannerisms and behaviors." 🤷🤷
    ...But: it is reappropriation/reuse of cultural/sociological "remainder'/'holdover." ...It cannot be considered "smart" or 'cool' [🙄🙄🤦] because: there is no clear reason for its use and no clear implication or statement which derives/is represented, from using it. ...so it becomes: utterly circumstantial, non-sequitur and useless (in context of the Styx album).

    Here some background info on the album Killroy was Here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilroy_Was_Here_(album)
    The band was already divided, as Dennis wanted to go the soft ballad route. Due to the huge success of Lady and Babe, I love you.
    The rest of the band didn't want to go that way. The album Killroy was Here divided the band even more. On top of that it divided the fanbase, too.

    "Kilroy was here" along with a cartoonish drawing of a head peeking over a ledge was graffiti on a wall found from a battlefield site during WW II.
    It had, in the ensuing years, been popularized worldwide to be a stand in for the everyday nobody who becomes, along with millions of other troops, sent as "anonymous drones" - a presence whose only sign of humanity is this mysterious whimsical drawing, with the desperate cry in the empty universe of "Kilroy was here".
    Its use here with that philosophical description of the common man's lot in mind, in what this song sees as his eventual usurpation by technology, is a repurposing that is meant to remind us of the initial impetus for why the graffiti was put there in the first place - not to be forgotten.

    "Loreli";
    "Blue Collar Man";
    "Quick Is The Beat Of My Heart" [🔥🔥🤘🤘];
    "Miss America";
    "Midnight Ride";
    "Suite: Madam Blue";
    "Lady";
    "Borrowed Time";
    "Witch Wolf"
    ...maybe: "Light Up" (🤷)
    "
    ...Go get to those!

    You guys know that Styx had three completely different singer/songwriters, right? While Dennis DeYoung wrote some great rock songs, he was more of the balladeer. Tommy Shaw wrote some great rock songs and some great ballads. But if you guys want rock, you need to turn the songs by James (JY) Young. Listen to songs like Midnight Ride, off of the Equinox album, Put Me On, off of the Crystal Ball album, Miss America, off of the Grand Illusion, and Half-Penny, Two-Penny, off of Paradise theater. Those will give you guys some rock! Lisa 💖🎸

    Kilroy was actually a thing in WW2. Not gonna list the whole story here (easy to google it), but Styx borrowed the name Kilroy as a symbol of 'everyone and no one' anonymity.
    PS: I was at the perfect age for Mr Roboto. Teens weren't old enough to be professional music critics and the older generation jumped on Styx for producing crap synth not worthy for "serious music enthusiasts". Truth is, Roboto allowed us kids to "discover" older Styx tunes and thus their back catalog got a booster shot. So, looking historically, Mr Roboto was a brilliant move on Styx's part and Kilroy was one of the last good concept albums.

    This song/album is what caused STYX to part ways with Dennis DeYoung mostly because he wanted to get theatrical with
    everything. Both JY and Tommy Shaw hated this song but still have to play it
    during concerts to avoid riots.
    I saw this concert in Bezerkely and they started and ended with this video presentation.
    They're playing (sans Dennis). If you get the chance, go check them out while you still can.
