Yes, I know this route VERY well!!
It's even more scenic when you take the train up to Vancouver, BC
I can imagine. One of my bucket list items is to take a train all the way up the west coast.
@@unclecoolie The Coast Starlight goes from Seattle to LA. Be prepared though: it has the most delays and is late more often than any other Amtrak route. But if you're not in a hurry, I recommend doing it.
The Mt. Baker International goes from Seattle up to Vancouver, BC. There's no advantage at all speedwise, but there's a BIG one in terms of beautiful scenery. The RR bridge that crosses the Fraser River up in BC was built in 1904 and sometimes it has a bad habit of locking up or not closing all the way, causing delays, so be prepared for this possibility.
If you're interested in doing a train ride that's REALLY scenic, then go on the Rocky Mountaineer train from Vancouver over to Jasper during the fall, when the foliage is at its peak.
But make your reservations VERY early because this is a very popular train tour.
You can go on the Rocky Mountaineer webpage for more info.
I can tell it looks like the 'next era' up in BC with those fancy signal lights, and Vancouver's skyline.
Bless you for uploading this! I lived in Vancouver for several years, and now live in Bellingham. I'm extremely familiar with this entire stretch of I-5. I used to go up to Canada to visit friends or down to Seattle on a somewhat regular basis. But ever since COVID hit and the Canadian border closed, I've been primarily confined to my home, only going out for necessary supply runs. One thing I've missed greatly is trips up and down I-5, in both directions. It might seem strange, but you have no idea what a comfort it is to be able to watch your dashcam footage and relive the long drives I used to take so frequently-- it gives me a feeling of normalcy, at a time when it's desperately appreciated.
Thank you! 😊
Bellingham squad!!! Beautiful city
This video, it's one of my favorites from you. Oh how I long to live in the Pacific NW.
This video literally starts right where I live. Wow, got my like
Thank you for another nice video. I love these😃
Thank you. My pleasure.
Washington: 0:00 - 1:16:00
British Columbia: 1:16:00 - 1:56:53
Thanks for the upload. A nice video I can watch in one sitting.
Thank you! I have a bonus video: my drive back to SeaTac airport from Vancouver that I'm currently working on, and I should have uploaded by the end of this week. Then I can move on to editing my 3rd major road trip!
11:17 stayed at that hotel went to BC 2days after! Amazing calm drive!
Vancouver is called City of Totems and if you go on a trip through that part of BC up 99, many of the towns have totem poles in them which are supposed to represent the chakras the native tribes worshipped. Really beautiful country worth a trip in of itself.
I was harassed by border control when I drove back to Sea-Tac Airport later that afternoon, but I was glad that I did this. I'd planned on doing a whole west coast trip up into Alaska, and that was why I chose to drive into Vancouver, thinking that the next trip would start from there northward. It's still on my list even 6 years later.
@@unclecoolie Hopefully you get to do it someday starting from Vancouver and when you do, be sure to stay in Whistler, it's a very cool resort town about an hour north on 99 if you have the time.
@@HyperActive7 Thanks.
Thanks. Very high quality videos
Thank you!
Great video. Watched the whole thing
Thank you!
Holy Moly!! Day 4 before Day 3. That is just mind blowing. I guess you uploaded this one because it is shorter.
I actually uploaded this video after day 3, but UA-cam is taking forever to finish rendering my day 3 video. It is about 12.5 hours long, though. Once the video for day 3 if finally rendered, I'll publish it. I'm also working on my bonus video, which is my drive back to SeaTac from Vancouver, and I should have that done this week. I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling in December, so I won't have much time to edit videos. That's why I'm pushing to wrap up all of the video for my west coast trip. It will be January before I can get my first video of my next trip out: my drive to Key West.
Ok that is very nice to hear. Can't wait for that
Can't wait to. I'am happy to hear that
Can't wait! Greetings from Athens Greece
@@panoscoach310 Greetings from the Washington, DC area!
They certainly have some interesting buildings in Vancouver, BC, It was an interesting trip. I saw lots of things I didn't know of. It's interesting they marked the Highway 99. A long time ago there was a US highway 99 that ran from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. It was replaced by I-5.
Yeah, the exotic buildings reminded me a little of those in Miami - unconventional designs. The one building that "twists" looks cool, but I'd be afraid to be inside that building.
Unclecoolie Productions That is probably the safest building to be in during an earthquake, tbh.
Ey glad you passed by my city! I hoped you like it here
Which was that?

Hello U.C., finally thank you for upload. Great, wonderful. Congratulation. LIKE!
...btw.. after your right turn into Granville St. (Hwy 99 B.C.) - did you see the squirrel? 1:44:41 - 1:44:42
+lol+ :) Greetings, R.
Greetings! I saw it. 😃
I will be adding my drive from Vancouver to Sea-Tac Airport near Seattle in the next couple of days. Then I will be working on my east coast video, which will be from St. John's in Newfoundland down to Key West, Florida. I hope to have that finished and uploaded by the end of January.
@@unclecoolie Oh great! thanks. I´m looking forward to it!
...btw.. good luck, all the best and health for 2019! :) :) :)
LOL i knew that cop was itching to pull somebody over
Very beuatiful ride.
Ohhh sa,.. I really like to see how you end the day like in the transition 1-2 part parking in that motel. These secuences give more immersion to the travel. Remember that we are at the passenger seat... By the way, when you eat? In those mini-stops in the car once a day?
Please don't feel overwhelmed just because I have a ton of questions, but I'd like to know just some general info for this video 'cause I'm curious:
1. What was the total distance driven for this video?
2. What dashcam do you use to record?
3. How big was the file when you finished driving for this video?
4. And how long did this video take to render, upload and process?
1. About 120 miles.
2. Garmin Virb Ultra 30.
3. About 50-60GB.
4. About 4-5 hours.
@@unclecoolie Do you store these files online somewhere for long term safekeeping? It must take quite a while to upload them.
For business owners, backing their stuff in the cloud is THE way to go.
@@scottbridge9391 No. I carry two separate 4 TB portable drives with me that use to back up video on my trips - the 2nd for redundancy in case one fails. I use a 256 GB micro SD card that can hold 16+ hours of 1080p/30fps video that copy over to the portable drives at the hotel each night. It can take two hours to back up my video to the drives each night, so I can't imagine trying to upload video that could exceed 600 GB per trip to a cloud, lol.
@@unclecoolie Wow. I have a Sony Cybershot that has a measly 16 GB card, and I store my videos on a paltry 500 GB external HD.
@@scottbridge9391 When I was recording time-lapse only videos, that was good enough. For example, when I did my six-day, 4,400-mile drive from Omaha to Santa Monica and back to Omaha in August, 2017, I only had a 32 GB micro SD card, and I was backing that up on my MacBook Pro directly, which only has 256 GB total. It's now that I record my trips in real-time that I'm consuming huge amounts of memory.
Or You Could Go On I-5 from San Diego to Vancouver, though it would be maybe 1/4 as scenic
I'd wanted to stay on the coast, which has much more spectacular.
The central valley of California is long and boring as ------. Nothing but cows, grass, cows and grass........and cows.
Thank you very much for day 4. I have watched the whole journey from San Diego to Vancouver.
What an amazing journey, i have seen so much.
Can it be your headings display wasn't functioning correctly until you were in Canada?
Thanks. The heading feature has been generally inaccurate, which is why I no longer use it in my newer videos.
1:16:00 now we're in Canada
I don't know if you already mentioned it somewhere, but what camera are you using as a dashcam?
Edit: Nvm I found out :) It's Garmin Virb Ultra 30
6 am seems the best time to travel, not alot of cars.
When I do long road trips, I like to start early. I had to start early on this day because I was driving up to Vancouver and then back to Sea-Tac airport by early afternoon to catch my flight back to DC.
And i live in seattle that's close to Everett!
Yep! At least this trip I got to drive through the bar district of Seattle's south side, unlike last time when I drove to Seattle from Washington, DC. 😃
@@unclecoolie I KNOW RIGHT AND THE VIDEO WAS 10 HOURS AND I KEEP WATCHING THE SAME VIDEOS CALIFORNIA TO NEW YORK I WATCHED THE WHOLE VIDEO WITH SPEED OF 2X AND THE OTHER VIDEO WAS WASHINGTON DC TO SEATTLE I DIDN'T WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO BECAUSE IT WAS 10 HOURS WOW AND I PUT SPEED OF 2X TOO BUT I STILL DIDN'T WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO!
SuperMario Dudes Amazing! 🤩
You timed that beautifully, you could have walked up to the border crossing.
I was almost tempted to.
👍
Thank you!
I live by everet
Nice area. That's where I spent my last night of this trip before heading back to DC.
Hey I've seen all your videos haha yes sometimes I have too much free time I really enjoy this would be great if you drive from TX to NY
Thank you! I would love to drive to TX one day, but I don't have much free time on my hands. One day I'd love to, though.
Just out of curiosity, do they let you cross into Canada without passport only if you are staying for a day or 2? I remember in the old days you didn't need one (to cross into Ontario anyway). Thank you for making these videos of this west coast trip. It gave me ideas and a glance of what to see and may help me plan my trip up the coast when the time comes.
Thanks. Yes, you now need a passport. Before around 2001 you could just cross using only a driver's license.
@@unclecoolie just out of curiosity yet again, what ballpark did renting the vehicle cost.. over 1000? I want to plan a trip like this out for next spring (probably SD to Portland), but im not sure what I am looking at.
1:42:46 flashing green light
That's the only time I've seen a flashing green light. I'm not sure what the purpose of it was.
I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to this, but did you not have to be checked upon crossing the border? It seems like you just drove through!
I did. I just didn't record it. I didn't want to take a chance on being harassed by the border agent by having a camera on and recording. It was really easy to cross into Canada as I was just asked a few questions and let go. I think I was there about 30 seconds.
When do we arrive ?
So... I have been watching a lot of your videos... Thank you for posting them. Please... What is your car?
Thank you! I drove a 2018 Nissan Altima that I rented from San Diego Airport and dropped off at Sea-Tac Airport at the end.
Not gonna lie It's weird seeing my college when I'm not walking on it (EVCC at the start of the video GO TROJANS)
I wonder if the car you are driving is infinity or Rav4? Which one is that?
This was a Nissan Murano.
I'm just turn on your video and listen soft music like the Beatles,Mac Demarco,Bob Dylan and etc.
😃
I want to go by myself lol 😂
Dealing with the border controllers, particularly on the way back, was a pain though.
That map is cool. What software is that?
Thank you. I used the Garmin Virb software, which extracts GPS data from the camera and puts it in the video, and then I use Final Cut Pro for all of the rest of the editing (texts, map overlays, etc.), and I create those overlays using Microsoft Paint and Final Cut Pro.
@@unclecoolie Wow, great job in figuring all that out.
@@nofurtherwest3474 Thanks.
You should buy an hybrid car :)
I want to get one, but only a brand new one, and I haven't paid off my current car yet.
How do you measure elevation and heading?
The camera that use records it, and I just use software to display it.
@@unclecoolie ah ok
What car do you use?
Nissan Murano.
Trying to watch these in order, this was day four, what was day 1 and 2?
Day one was San Diego to Aptos, CA; and day two was from Aptos to Crescent City, CA. These videos are uploaded as well.
Did you know that Canada has less gravity? And did you feel it?
Lol, no.
Then watch this here video ua-cam.com/video/uhHqk_k8kos/v-deo.html
Did you see it? And like it?
@@lilmansnake2006 I watched some of it. It's okay.

Come to Ottawa or Toronto
I've already done a road trip up into Canada, but through Montreal not Toronto or Ottawa. I'd wanted to drive through those cities by going into Ontario via Niagara Falls, but I ran short of time. I'm currently getting ready to publish my east coast road trip video, which is from St. John's down to Key West, and then I'll start working on the Montreal video sometime later this month.
