I have been trying to add a number of port holes on a curved surface. In your video you show how to plot a circle on a curve surface, but HOW do you Pad or Pocket the sketch you just created?
Enjoy your videos. I mainly stay in the Part Design work bench I think the curve workbench will be beneficial to me in make parts for model boats. Thanks again

If you share your file with me, I will take a look and give you the best way to pad or pocket from there.

During the video you draw a circle using the curve workbench. Then you make another circle using Part Design and make a hole. I don't see you padding or pocketing the sketch in the curve wb. Thanks

Hi, interesting. I found your channel a few weeks ago and have been catching up on your past videos. I have been using FreeCad for some time now and think its very good. One issue I am stuck on is trying to to machine raised text on a background. I use shape string text in Draft then Extrude it up in Part so I have the raised text on a background but how to machine the background in Path and leave the text ???? anyway enjoy watching your videos. cheers

Isn't the distortion down to the fact that the circle on which the hole is based has been drawn on a two dimensional plane and, therefore, when viewed along an axis perpendicular to that plane appears as, and is in fact round, whereas the circle drawn on the 'unwrapped' sketch is also circular but that circle is then wrapped around a cylinder. When the two-dimensional circle is wrapped around the curve it appears as an ellipse when viewed perpendicular to the tangent of the cylinder. Cut a circle out of paper and stick it onto a high ball glass of the same or slightly larger diameter to get an exaggerated demonstration of this. I think the effect is easier to discern with a centred square with sides almost as big as the cylinder height but leaving a margin. BUT, having said that, if you change the dimensions of the surface of the cylinder after you have formed the mapped sketch (increasing or decreasing the height, say), the size of the mapped sketch remains the same and the shape of the 'circle' distorts to form an ellipse with a vertical dimension adjusted to conform to the ratio of the diameter of the circle to the original height even if the new cylinder height has been adjusted to be smaller than the diameter of the circle. On another point, how do you do something useful with that circle shape as it seem not possible to effect a pad or pocket as the sketch is outside the Body?

That's what I thought at first but, after putting a hole through the circle draws differently. It certainly wasn't consistent.

You should consider that AutoCAD is developed by AutoDesk, they are a $42bn company. You can't expect FreeCAD to compare to their offering. If you are looking for commercial software, FreeCAD is probably not for you. If you are a hobbyist that wants to use software unincumbered by the whims of licensing changes, then you may have found a good answer. Either way, choose what works best for you.

Thank you for your videos. I have learn a lot from them.
Can you recomend a cheap 3D printer? and can you include some demo for printing freecad projects

I use an Ender 3 pro v2 and very happy with. Not crazy expensive and includes a lot of features.
I will do some 3d printing videos.

I tried this since i have never used curved workbench. It looks to me that your sketch is 2d and wraped round the cylinder and is not properly shown till you do the cut. I had no issues with the holes not being central. I also noticed that if you start your scetch on a different plane your drawing remains on the xy plane, i also managed to turn the sketch of the hole so it was shorter top to bottom rather than yours which was shorter left to right

Ditto. I however tried a revolved and a padded cylinder, to see if there might be differences, but both were spot on. I did notice that his is not fully constrained and not sure if that might have an effect. I am using 0.20.1 release.

Could it be it is mirrored the long way just like it was on the short edge? I'm think you are maybe view it from the back side as how you showed it in the video you could see part of the unwrap because it was still behind the cylinder which suggests they expect you to work flip from where you were. Hope that made sense😉

Hmm, the distortion, I'm pretty new to FreeCAD so still feeling my way, but could it 'just(!)' be an artifact of the viewer? The sketch for the hole was created on a flat plane parallel to an axis whereas the sketch for the circle was created on an 'unwrapped' circumference of the cylinder?

You are moving the cylinder around on the screen at 3.20 minutes. How do you setup FreeCAD so you can move the image like that?

Hi Ian. I know this has nothing to do with my query, but I was wondering whether you know how to do a spline shaft in Freecad. I have to reverse-engineer and special knob to fit a pre-existing piece of equipment, and it has to sit on a shaft with a 6mm shaft which protrudes from the end. This shaft has approximately 20 'teeth' projecting on which the knob has to engage. Not sure if this is adequate description, but if you think you can help I would be more than happy to send you a picture via email. Cheers, Noel

Hi Noel, I am sure we can reproduce it in FreeCAD. - Send me some pictures, I will create a parametric version then you can go back and put in the correct dimensions.
