  • 1975 Players Atlantic CASC Formula Atlantic Series Review.
A 30 minute TV summary of the 1975 season touching tracks long gone and those still with us such as Tremblant, Mosport and Atlantic Motorsport Park. Gilles Villeneuve and Bobby Rahal before anyone really knew who they were, Bill Brack and his squash racket, safety facepalms that makes a person wonder what the heck were they thinking?!
Hopefully nobody will have issues with the rights for this vintage piece of video.

This movie is a treasure. I hope someday to see the seasons of 1976 and 1977, the golden years of Gilles Villeneuve. Thank you so much.

Incredible discovery. Shows the sequence of drives that established Giles Villeneuve as a talent and contender, against all odds At Manitoba, the unknown French Canadian, Villeneuve with only a family crew and running on the winnings of absurd motorised ski racing, wins in a rainstorm. Next race on the classic undulating narrow, St Jovite, he runs Elliot Forbes Robinson close and then the similar, Mosport, described as a mini Nurburgring . Villeneuve a true 'ice rider' again showed genius, before blowing up.
Villeneuve who was rumoured to have developed his talents running moonshine as a teenager on iced up Quebec roads, and changed his birthdate from 1950 to 1952, in his first serious media interviews, presents himself as a slick, fashionable sports star looking like Patrick Tambay or Giacomelli. You don't know how much Gilles, wanted F1, and how incredible his story is. Villeneuve's detractors like Bernie Eccelstone, should watch this. I guess Enzo Ferrari probably saw this clip, in 1976.

Wow! Thanks for posting that. I loved Westwood. It's part of my youth. Have done a few laps there. Used to sneak my '78 750f onto the track when it was closed with a few friends. There was a gate between the ditches there above the old gravel pit. We left a long 2x12 hidden in the bush and after work when we felt like it would head up there and make a couple quick bridges and we was in baby! Attended many races there as spectator and did driver training there and a couple races as well.
These days, many people fondly remember all of their Westwood track experiences. I do as well. I watched Player's Challenge raes at Westwood. Was very happy when some great and wonderful modders released a Westwood track mods for rFactor and Asetto Corsa as well. . Haven't tried the Asetto Corsa version yet but the Westwood version seems pretty accurate. Add to that The 1976 Formula Atlantic mod or the Lola t340 Formula Ford mod.. or whatever strikes your fancy and enjoy a few virtual historic laps.
I just spent a couple of hours racing everybody mentioned in this video at virtual Westwood with 1976 Atlantic mod. Best time is a 1:04.2 so far.. still playing with setup.
    It's really a blast.
Sim racers: There are many great tracks to race on.. I dare say Westwood could be termed unique.. it's a rare track indeed challenge wise [ The Carousel and Turn 3 will give you fits.. ] Try it if you want a challenge.
Thanks again for posting this video.

@Flame Resistant Troll hi Nick! Bikers in 80th used the same idea vs fog in 500cc grand prix! They had a kind of musk under their helmet.

Great scenery. Natural and human. And 1975 was the last year of the 1960s, long hair, hippies and the gypsy style lifestyle of the motor racing camp followers. Also in 1975 the US F5000 and Atlantic series still had good sponsorship which is why the racing and fields are good. For the rest of the 1970s it was a recession, etc...

Was Formula Atlantic akin to Formula 2? if that is true then what was the prime open wheel series in North America? I know that IndyCar or CART wasnt established until 1978

    • @warhog258

That would have gone to F5000 cars.

      @@warhog258 Thanks for the answer.
I have been trying to find the information by miself but its really scarce, this information is not available in my country (Spain) in any other form but Internet.
I was wondering for instance in what other series was running the McLaren m16 that won the 1974 Indy 500 and i was surprised to find that it didn't compete in any USAC/Formula 5000 race that year but looking for history of the car it says that it won in Michigan which wasn't part of the championship!

@@miguelelgueta5830 The m16's actually were still campaigned into the early 80's in CART. In fact in 1979 CART took over the events for both of Michigans 150 mile events. "However M16s of various vintages would continue in service in private hands for several years, all the way through the CART/USAC split at the turn of the decade. Indeed, as late as 1981 - a decade after the type’s debut and long after the works team had given up on America - the car still figured on CART grids. It really was an extraordinary car, and an important piece of our US history." - via mclaren.com regarding m16's

I wish there was more information about the different open wheel series in America, the whole world was full of amazing and innovative Formula cars back in the early 70s

Currently looking to purchase a Formula Atlantic of this era of no ground effect or even a post 78' watercooled formula vee.
