    Beautiful to be on board. I only recently found the Duluth web cam and the vids of Paul Scinocca. Never realized that you always have sounds around you, of course that's logical, I just never thought of that. Oh .. and my compliments to the person who washes the windows. Job well done!
    Thank you for taking us along. oops, 10 years ago ...

    I've watched alot of boats including the Tregurtha about a thousand times from Mission Point in the Soo. Pretty cool to see it from a different perspective!

    These great ships must have a shallow draft. When you look at the narrowness of this body of water they just passed through, you wouldn't think it would be deep enough to support this ship. All in all, pretty amazing to watch.

    • @GEES44DC
      @GEES44DC 7 років тому +1

      Many places have been dredged to add depth.

    • @wendygoerl9162
      @wendygoerl9162 6 років тому +2

      They need to. The shallower the draft, the more ports they can serve. Lakers haven't even had external keels since the days of sail. Just the world's largest canoes.

    • @funnelvortex7722
      @funnelvortex7722 3 роки тому +2

      Deeper keeled ships can access these channels since they need to accommodate salties, the lack of deep keels on designated lakers is moreso a cost saving measure.

It’s hard when you have a girlfriend or kids whatnot. It’s a mentally challenging job and has great benefits. I have contacts if you are still interested 5 years later lol

    the ferry does not have the right of way - Rule 9: "A vessel shall not cross a narrow channel if such crossing impedes the passage of vessel which can safely navigate only within that channel . . " This applies to sailboats too. The Tregurtha has right of way.

    • @davidwadsworth8982
      @davidwadsworth8982 6 років тому

      Bill Thomas, absolute truth.I had a run into by a sail boat while transiting the Hudson River, while at the wheel of Niagara Prince. Sail boats son started screaming all the number and rules that did not exist. We won in Court.

    • @pickleboat45
      @pickleboat45 6 років тому +3

      Court? No question about the rules, shouldn't even go to court. But sail boaters do not know or understand the Rules of the Road. I saw the same situation going in the channel to Erie, Pennsylvania several years ago - a small sailboat tacked into the path of a freighter coming in - this is not sail over power right of way. A 600 foot freighter in a channel has the right of way.

    • @wendygoerl9162
      @wendygoerl9162 6 років тому +8

      "Manuvering evolutions"? They're in the St. Mary's--practically a weekly commute for them. They literally transit it around a hundred times a year. If you take a friend with you on your daily commute, do you refuse to talk to them while you're inches away from other cars (in the other lanes) going down the highway because you can't afford the distraction? When Dennis Hale was invited on the Roger Blough, the only restriction the captain gave was he and his friends weren't allowed in the pilothouse while the ship was docking. Otherwise, he let them have the run of the boat. Compared to some of the places lakers have to go, St. Mary's in daylight on a relatively calm day doesn't even demand a fully-trained wheelsman.
