I took my first test a few months ago. If the inspec wasn’t lenient, I would’ve busted. He was old school. I had one side on my branch that had a little slag in it. Everything else was mint, it was probably the best bead I’d ever ran on the bell-hole. He told me the only way I was going to learn was to get out there and weld. He said he could tell I knew what i was doing, I just needed experience, so he gave me my papers👍🏼 I’m glad too because I worked my tail off practicing and rigging up!!
Man the more I watch your videos the more impressed I am. You're wise beyond your years brother and people's lives are being changed by your guidance and wisdom. Rock on bro
My daddy a native-american welder here in Utah. I love jacob schifeild being a fire witch for my dad makes me wanna be like him. Watching this videos make be wanna get going.
Well said, I've been welding for 21 years and still remember the1st test I busted out on.It was with solar flux on 2" sch 40 stainless. It was heart breaking to say the least but I kept my head up. Still welding and still working. Don't give up!!!
Life is scary boys/girls. But usually the most successful people are the ones who can control thier fear. Doesn't mean there not scared, just know how to process it. Jake i wish you woulda started these videos 5 years ago lol woulda given me a heads up on what to expect and how to do it. Stay safe guys and keep on keepin on.
Just passed my first welding test 7018 vertical up on 1 inch plate qualifys unlimited thickness also got my first welding job which is basically a paid internship. The videos help a lot. Thanks a lot On to the 4g and 6g next
Another thing is if your going 1000 miles to a job to test have a second or even a third place to go to if you bust the first test or get run off or drag up. Always have a second or third option. If you do get hired then don't let it go to your head,be some what humble and watch and learn from the old guys and show those old guys respect. They will help you more than you know because they have been in the same place your at and some old guy helped them.
I remember my first test like it was three months ago.. 2" 6g downhill and 12" 6g downhill. Nervous as hell because I went as a helper the day before, saw four seasoned professionals bust on the 2" visual. And I'm there, 18 year old kid, fresh out of high school, annoyed management until they would send me. Threw my $800 '88 Blackface on a company rig. Passed the 2" visual, even with BT on the hot I had to repair. Cut straps, bent perfectly. Welded 12", two bead cap. Bend the 12" and on my last strap some slag popped out but inspector said it was well without allowance (he was inspecting to ASME sec IX). Told me I was the youngest man he's ever had take the test, let alone pass it. I swear that was the best day of my life. You could punch me in the face and I'd still smile.
Thank you this video jacob. I appreciate the most detailed as possible explanation of what to expect on the first test. I will soon feel this feeling as im shooting to test the start of the year.
best video i have seen yet it was the same for me getting into a shop now i want to do pipe line welding and i know iam going to so freaking nerves on my first pipe test ty for the reminder
A lot of the times it's who u know or who u blow. Anybody can blow out on a weld. Even old welders. Especially if x-rayed . You got good days and you got bad ones. Just don't give up
Here is something else to think bout fellas even those seasoned hands.....we started in the same place as you. Some guys forget from time to time. But we did most hands don't mind helping or giving pointers just as long as your not a dip shit.
Will you always have to take a branch test ?? And if your not to good at reading blue prints will that hold you back ?? If a person has only done welding and not much fitting how difficult will it be on that person to break out as a rig welder ??? By the way very good vids you make you are by far one of the most honest people on UA-cam
Great topic man i took my first test last friday it was 6” sch. 80 6g It was for a single hand spot. I didnt have any tools with me to my name. After i cut and cleaned my coupon up and started to fit up i knew i was in bad shape cause the faces were wavy as could be but i took my time rotating getting them close as possible hi-lo was good so i burned my tacks in and set up. Adter i got my root in and inspected it, it looked good i though i was home free, layed in my hot cleaned it and was off to the races, till i layed the 1/8th lh well that was one for the scrap pile but i do not plan on giving up
We used to boon dock camp when jobs would first start till we got a check. We didnt have a lot of travel money, especially coming off of a long job slump. But yo just do what you have to do. Truck stop showers in the winter, water truck bath is the summer till you get paid.
😂 was trying to retire on that first test huh. when you were practicing before that first test how long did it take ya to do a bell hole an branch? few hours?
Hi Jake, thanks for all the great advice and motivation. I've been working as a single hand and really want to get into the oilfield. I know the welding style is different and I'd love to get started as a helper. Should I be trying to contact other welders or companies directly to find a helpers position? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, David.
Hey David try out Indeed. Com I’m allways getting emails for pipeline positions . Really nice website to find work when you don’t have your foot in the door . Good luck
Heck ya, this video was kick pants! This has me excited!! I can mirror this to my pro rodeoing so much. The nerves and anxiety can def be on your side if you translate them the right way. Anyone who has rode bovine and said they didn't have nerves and fear was a lying dog. The welding side is new to me. So I'm having nerves I haven't had in a long while!
That's the way she goes....every job you go to ,new job test . A welder is never good enough. Hah I wish I only had 20grand tied up . Some guys puke on test day , alot on the line for a rig welder . Not for the faint of heart being a welder. Everyone wonders why welders are drunks

hahah it happens to everyone no doubt.
A lot of the times it's who u know or who u blow. Anybody can blow out on a weld. Even old welders. Especially if x-rayed . You got good days and you got bad ones. Just don't give up
Keep on pushing no matter what
Those the nerves and anxiety are no joke
they can really mess with you for sure.
Here is something else to think bout fellas even those seasoned hands.....we started in the same place as you. Some guys forget from time to time. But we did most hands don't mind helping or giving pointers just as long as your not a dip shit.

I appreciate that. i actually have my first weld test tomorrow, just a mig test but itll be something to get the bills paid while i finish up school!

e harris always be ready for a branch.
For the jobs like you are on right now. Do you have to find your own helper or will they hire someone for you once you have passed the weld test ?
usually they will let you bring one but if you dont have one they will usually have someone come help you.
She’s like who are all these friends your talking about 🤔🤔🤔 😂😂😂
Great topic man i took my first test last friday it was 6” sch. 80 6g

Keep your head up! They didn’t allow 3/32 LH on it ? 1/8 is a brute
hey man it happens to everybody not a big deal on to the next one.
We used to boon dock camp when jobs would first start till we got a check. We didnt have a lot of travel money, especially coming off of a long job slump. But yo just do what you have to do. Truck stop showers in the winter, water truck bath is the summer till you get paid.
Amen sometimes thats what it takes.
😂 was trying to retire on that first test huh. when you were practicing before that first test how long did it take ya to do a bell hole an branch? few hours?
When you go to test, do you know if you’ll be going to the fire line or the fab side? Or is that something you find out after passing the test?
they will put you where they need you unless you hired specifcaly for something usually just the bead hands and hopass
Can you do a video on owning your own welding rig vs not having your own truck. Have you worked on a pipeline job without your own truck?
never been on a job without my truck. i broke out as a rig welder but a lot of guys dont and make bomb money without the over head.
Hi Jake, thanks for all the great advice and motivation. I've been working as a single hand and really want to get into the oilfield. I know the welding style is different and I'd love to get started as a helper.

the welding side will get easier if you just stick with it.
so you keep talking about the rates for welders and truck what kind of insurance do you have to have to be eligible to work for these customers
1 million 2 million general liabilty 1 million on my truck and a 1 million on me.
Is all the welding smaw? is there and gtaw work in this field?
Been doing this for years... still hate test day... lol
10 hrs for 4 welds? That's kinda long.... totally agree with everything you said though...
