Hi, was (1976-1984) an active black powder shooter and enthusiastic long range shooter with English long range rifles for paper patch. Was fortunate enough to own several rifles from Whitworth, A. Henry, Keer, Rigby and Metford. Back then I had to learn a lot to get the best results from these weapons. To calibrate the whole thing at the end also wrong! 4. When I also saw that when I put the bullet into the barrel it only fits with pressure, it made me sick! Four mistakes from a few more! @capandball Thank you so much for an informative lecture. I have a .45 Mortimer Whitworth Standard. I struggled to get the gun that it don't shoot keyhole in the target. I then used Semolina for a filler. I shoot 5 shot groups at 100m that group a cloverleaf and at 300m 5 x 4 inch groups. It is with 530grain bullets with grooves. I would like to paper patch the bullets. Now to find a smooth mould. I think by using a filler the gunpowder is much more constantly pressed and if you push your bullet down you can't compress the gunpowder, the semolina filler prevents it from happening.
He cleaned it by pouring boiling water through the barrel and then using the ramrod with a cloth over and over until the water ran clean. Then he greased it with the same process. Then powder ramrodded for "a very long time", then cloth with bullet in front of it ramrodded again. Cap put on the "nipple" and the striker lowered on to it. Loaded. Incredible!
Third shot: Oh, that's not bad at all. Fourth shot: Wow! But it could be luck... Fifth shot: It's definitely luck. The rifle was lucky to meet a good shooter.
"This whole story started by receiving a ticket for parking in the wrong space , but guess what, I have my revenge. I shot the man who gave me the ticket with a bullet patched with the paper from the ticket."
The bullet / patch combination was used to prevent erosion of the bullet's base from the hot powder gases. The combination is assembled and sized as one unit to fit groove diameter.
