I always felt bad for Sally, walking in on Roger and Megans mom and then Don and Sylvia. Not to mention having to deal with Betty! I think Sally turned out pretty okay :)

When I was young,I went to dinners like this with my parents. Though children image life for adults is the ever-after of Cinderella, you discover things from around the corner and first witness the truth of the"adult world".
I can recall moments like this for Sally. Where you think certain adults are truly remarkable and pedestal-worthy, and then there is an incident (you can never tell about) where all your dreams crash in. Such a sad moment growing up is; WAKING up out of childhood.
Mad Men is more real life...than real life. One of my favorite shows.

I friggin' LOVED this episode! Everyone was awesome - Don, Megan, Peggy, Joan, Sally, Roger, Ken. That shot near the end of them all just sitting at the table was perfection.
This show was so well written. The characters were so rich with depth and flaws you felt like you already knew them because they are all a slice of someone you really do know. They all seemed familiar. Mad Men is in my top three shows of all time. It is in 2nd place to Sopranos for me.
This episode was amazing. Another example of why this is the best show on tv and I bet they'll win the Emmy again. This entire season has been phenomenal and I wait with bated breath all week for the next episode.
I lived with my husband for years before we got engaged/married and it was a big upset in my family. Not so much on my husband's side but my mom really struggled with the social judgement she was percieving from other people. In my case, it worked out and we were highly compatible but on the other side, I can see the case made for not living together first too. I sort of missed out on living on my own or with roommates, missed the opportunities to make my own space or path before joining with a partner. I kind of missed my 20s in a way so I can see where a lot of those arguments come from and I've had similar confrontations with my mom about it, but at the end of the day, we were in love and we did get married in the end.
I respect the old traditions and Religious precepts regarding marriage, but at the same time, we Americans have problems when it comes to marriage. I won't judge couples who want to see if they can cohabitate first, before getting married. If anyone wants to argue about theology; couples are quite possibly spiritually married once they go steady and consummate. The living arrangement isn't the big picture, but the biggest hurdle, day to day, never ending cohabitation.
I was really touched by the scene between Peggy and her mom.I grew up with this mom's traditions.Living together was shacking up.It was wrong,you don't do it,& I didn't.
When my daughter chose to live with her boyfriend before marriage, I didn't complain because life teaches you things. I've seen too many marriages fail because they just weren't compatible and they could've found that out within weeks of living together.
Yet,I agree with Peggy's mom.If he was going to marry her, he would have.
My mother (who was a kid in the 60s) has the opposite mindset. In fact, my sister being a kind of modern Peggy Olson (focused on work, independent, strong temperament, childfree and unmarried after a 14 year-long relationship) is what they are most proud of about her.
I agree with the last sentence, though, but mostly because I've seen it in Hollywood: artists who don't believe in marriage until they start a new relationship...and marry.
The problem with living together you are taking a chance. My mistake I should have dumped him but I was 30 years old and wanted marriage and a family. However, I had other reasons why I did live with someone - I kept getting a lot of demands from my mother to provide financial support despite I did since I was 17 years old. She just couldn't understand or want to but I wanted a life of my own. She had 4 marriages but they were a disaster because each one was a deadbeat. What I learned is not to fall for a deadbeat he at least was a professional architect. The problem I had he was abusive - and I was his second wife. I wished I knew before getting married but didn't experience it till after I was married.
@@angelacarleton9575 Marriage is a MUCH bigger, complicated problem. A nightmare of litigious proportions. No one wins. Living together is a lot simpler.
shrapnel77 All of the benefits and none of the responsibilities...and statistically an even worse bet. Marriages that follow living together do worse than those that don’t. Logical or not, this is reality. The truth is, if he wanted to marry her he would have proposed, Peggy was disappointed and instead of honoring those realities they punted.
@@i.e.presents638 understand what you are saying about Peggy. Maybe it's a regional, cultural or generation or all of the above but I have not seen that. Or experienced. for the young adults the new millennium seemed to change that. Not sure why but if any of my friends married without moving in together, we would scratch our heads. Nothing wrong with that, there were just not many of us who did it more traditionally.
That was one of my fav scenes of the show is the Heinz beans pitch at dinner. Also, Cracked me up when ken shushes his wife lmao
Loved Julia Ormond. It took me a moment to recognize her. Strong scenes in every direction. I feel the momentum. Great work!

It's 2021 and I'm binge watching the Jared Harris collection right now. Currently in season 5 of Mad Men and also season 2 of The Expanse. I guess when I'm done with these I move on to The Crown?

Another mind blowing episode. This is crazy..every character was delivered so well, everyone nailed it. The cloths were super splendid particularly the Heinz and Awards Dinner and i must say everything. Great job MW, JB and the team ! Keep it up !
PLEASE! Make these available for people outside the US, i am aware that we dont have the same air dates but to have an insight like these videos give us, give us a better feel of what the episode was about and what goes on behind the scenes! AND we want to know because WE LOVE MAD MEN!
I'm glad there isn't such a stigma on couples living together anymore. I would never get married without living with someone first. I think it's the best way to see whether or not you CAN live together and see how compatible you are before committing yourself in a (hopefully,) lifelong and legally binding relationship. I also love the fact that it's more acceptable today to not get married if you don't want to, as well! To each their own!
Living together was a big deal even in the late 80s, my mother disowned me. Did marry had two daughters, and my husband was not happy when our youngest daughter moved in with her boyfriend.
That "Mad Men" attention to detail: When Joan is giving Peggy advice in the office, Joan is wearing a brooch almost if not identical to one that had belonged to my grandmother.

A lot of people don't think about the character of Peggy's Mom. But she really is low key one of the worst characters on the show. Just a rotten shit of a human.

It's true, a man and woman who live together are living in sin. If people live together before marriage, they have seen everything. Sex is a gift that should only be saved for marriage. If you see each other naked before marriage, then marriage isn't as special. There is nothing to look forward to!!
I mean what kind of life do y’all live where marriage is all about sex? Sex is one way to be close to your partner. Other ways include spending quality time, doing nice things for them, showing them you love them. “You have nothing to look forward to!” How about waking up everyday next to the person you love?
@@edwinam1362 you're completly right! Sex should not be the centre of marriage. I have just mentioned it because sex is such a special gift, and it was being referred to in this video. The point I am making is that the first time a man and woman lay in bed together and wake up together in the morning is so special, and it should be saved for marriage. Think about your future spouse for a moment. How many woman would you want your future husband to sleep with before he sleeps with you? You would hope he saved that special moment for you, and waited for you. We are only called to do the same. We can do this if we wait until we are married to sleep with someone. I understand it's hard to wait, but we must, for our future spouse and if we truly love Christ.
@@amyhaleeb5527 someone should be with as many people as they want before marriage, if that's something they feel they need to get out of their system it's much healthier to do so than to have a nagging feeling about it once you're committed to one person. There's literally zero benefit to saving sex for marriage. What if you have some problem together in that regard? Then you're stuck together trying to work out something in the constraints of a marriage rather than being able to figure it out beforehand.
You're making sex out to be such a big deal and such an important benefit of marriage but you don't think it would be useful to test your compatibility beforehand? If one of the partners is unable to provide the other with what they need in that regard they're now stuck in a marriage that's harder to get out of, instead of being able to work through it if possible or go their separate ways before without that kind of pressure.
You're trying to portray this as if it makes practical sense or is beneficial when really it's just something you believe because of your commitment to a mythology and a conservative morality, and you are trying to sell it as something other than that.
@@amyhaleeb5527 religious conservatives fetishize and obsess over sex far more than anyone else. The healthy thing is to simply see it as another part of life and treat it in that way. If there's something you dislike about someone or some way they aren't meeting your needs it's helpful to know that before you commit yourself to a marriage. Sex is the same way. Not only are you suggesting that people should go through years of suppressing an innate desire before marriage, you are setting people up to have no way to know if they're even going to be happy with what they get after the marriage.
