    2021 June Garden Tour: • June Container Garden ...
    Hello! My name is Bethany and I grow things in my rooftop container garden in Chicago, zone 6a. In this video, I'll show you what my garden looks like at the beginning of July.
    The weather has gotten much warmer, which means the plants are shooting up in growth and most of the flowers have starting blooming adding a burst of color to the garden.

    Second time commenting within the last couple of days lol😅 I had budworms in my garden on my petunias specifically and watched your video and it gave me hope for my flowers🥹 it’s nice to see someone not look so stressed about buggies cause I’m freakin lol I don’t want them to take over but like you said you can’t fight Mother Nature💚

      I cut my petunias back a few weeks ago that were being eaten by budworms and now they are back to being full of flowers!

    Great job on your garden, it’s doing great! Do you fertilize your dahlias? And what do you use? Wonderful job!

      I do! I use both fox farm big blooms and Jack’s bloom booster. I fertilize about once every two weeks, switching between each.

      @@ChicagoGardener thank you very much for the info! I’m growing dahlias for the first time and it’s not growing very much. I too also have no room and I grow them in pots. What’s the brand of grow bags you use? Maybe my pots are too small. Thank you for your help!!!!

    Your garden looks so beautiful! Mine starts out beautiful then gets ruined because we have a groundhog who constantly destroys everything we are growing 😔

      Ugh that’s frustrating! A benefit of gardening up here is no rodents or deer destroying the plants.

    I can imagine that a lot of perennial flowers aren't terribly great in a container garden, because they usually only flower for a short time. In a garden bed, they're usually combined with other perennials that flower at other times of the season. If a perennial stays small, like your delphinium, you could keep color in the container with annuals, but that would be hard to do with heuchera, because the plants are taking up so much of the container. I do love the blue of the delphinium, and your rose looks awesome!

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 роки тому

      Yeah, I thought I’d enjoy having perennials more than I do since, but the annuals are what really make me happy in the garden. I think I’ll be shifting more back toward annuals next season.

  • @flowerpixel

    I actually thought your delphinium (?) was a larkspur so I agree it doesn't seem okay? My morning glory will not flower! Do you have any tips for growing them in pots? This is tempting me to get a raspberry plant. I love seeing hydrangeas in pots!! I purchased my first dwarf hydrangeas this year. And your herb garden looks great.

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 роки тому +1

      This is my first year trying morning glory! Mine haven’t bloomed yet either but I think they are one of the latest plants to bloom, around August or September, so I’m not giving up hope yet!

    Can you plz suggest any perennials that will come back next year in containers or any winter hardy plants that can grow in pots as I also stay in Chicago.

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 роки тому

      Would you be leaving the containers outside all winter? If so, my blueberries, raspberries, rhubarb, and delphiniums all came back after leaving them outside.

    I just love your rooftop garden. Questions, which of your plants in containers do you take inside and which plants can handle the cold and wind chill during the winter? I have a small deck and would love to start a container garden on the deck. But I don't wanna take any plants inside. I live in Milwaukee.

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 роки тому +1

      So last winter, I only brought my dahlias inside. I left out blueberries, raspberries, rhubarb, delphiniums, hydrangeas, roses, and bulbs I planted in the fall. I moved them up against the side of our home for some extra protection. I did lose some plants but it seemed to be more from the very wet spring we had that caused root rot. I’m not sure yet what I’m going to bring inside but I think definitely the hydrangeas and any bulbs. I’m also thinking of maybe finding a very short green house to store them in on the deck.

    Is there any consideration to the added weight to the roof? Just curious if I’m looking to do the same. If there were a heavy snow along with the weight of the soil in winter, could it be an issue?

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 роки тому +1

      Definitely! One of the first things we did before adding the raised beds is figure out the deck capacity. Ours is 100 lbs per sqft so we knew we were okay having the raised beds and weight from the snow hasn’t been an issue. I would definitely recommend finding out deck capacity for anyone wanting to garden on their deck before adding large raised beds or pots!
