Why glutamate receptor antagonist used in parkinsonism disorder mam?
Use of NMDA antagonists in Parkinson’s Disease (PD)
(1) NMDA antagonists block abnormal glutamate signals seen in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease.
(2) subthreshold doses of NMDA antagonists cause enhanced release of striatal dopamine and
(3) Parkinson’s Disease models suggest that NMDA antagonism may protect nigral neurons.
It has been found that NMDA antagonism improves PD symptoms, is neuroprotective and prevent PD progression by inhibition of glutamatergic-mediated excitotoxicity.
