Because, velocity is a vector quantity and you cannot take distance because if you take distance then, distance / time = a scalar quantity you will get.. But, displacement divide by time = a vector quantity, that is velocity. Always remember, Velocity = magnitude(speed) + direction Hope you understand ❤
