    Why is the football action slowed down? Play it at 1.5 speed and it looks about right.

      The films were recorded at 32 frames per second. When they recorded audio over them for highlight videos like these, they would replay it at 24 fps so the commentator could keep up.

      KMK7355 Not until 1956 did ND helmets universally use a face guard (single bar). Before that, a guy who had a broken nose or jaw might have had some kind of protection cobbled to his leather helmet.

      Better without face masks which only encourage players to put their head where it has no business being. So said the great George Connor of ND who knew a little bit about football.

      Agree. Now with the modern helmets and face masks, defenders throw themselves head first like guided missals. There would be a lot more broken noses without face masks today, but I would bet that the serious injuries would be less.
