Great video series! 357 is probably my favorite handgun caliber. I've had my eye on the Rossi 357 lever gun for a while, that's a nice looking little rifle.
@kentuckyrangetime I've been deer hunting with the 357 mag. in a 6-inch barrel for years, but I've never used the 140gr. xpt and was wondering how it did in rifle and revolver. I now think I'll try it this year.
@@mkshffr4936 yes! It’s already on my list. I’ll be running a matching 20” R92 in .44mag, a 9.5” super Redhawk and a 2.75” S&W 69, combat Magnum. I have several XTP bullet weights already loaded and hope to have 5-6 total bullets tested.
Another great test. You've confirmed the 357 Mag, short barrels shot a lighter bullet for good expansion. Longer handguns shoot a 140-158. In a rifle shot 158.
Really good stuff 👍 The XTP bullets expand well and have plenty of penetration as long as there is sufficient velocity. I'm planning to use this bullet and H110, out of my T/C Contender during deer season. Thanks again 👍
I am partial to the Hornady 140s. In part because their factory loads are amazing. I do prefer flexy tip to the JHP, at least out of a rifle. Looking forward to the results.
Interesting observation: I got the velocity from a 3 inch Ruger GP100 as you got from the Rossi 3". Same bullet and same powder. To me the interesting part is that I only used 17.2 get of powder in mine. Seems like in a 3 inch barrel -/+ 1200fps is about all you're going to get with h110 and 140 gr bullet no matter how much more powder past about 17 gr. From my 16" Rossi 92 I'm getting about 1825 fps with 17.2 gr of h110. So only around 100 fps less than your 20". Anyway I enjoy your content. Very useful information.
@@Scout66 👍🏻Thanks! There’s definitely a point where more powder doesn’t yield an increase in velocity, usually in shorter barrels where the bullet exits the barrel before all the powder gets burned up, and another point where excess barrel length actually adds resistance and starts slowing down the bullet. This is where powder selection starts factoring into the load development process. I still find it pretty interesting that different powders ignition and burn characteristics, in an explosion that happens in a fraction of a second, can still make such a difference in a bullets performance. 😉👍🏻
@@kentuckyrangetime side question: in my Rossi 92 I'm getting case bulging just forward of the rim. Happens with all 357mag ammo, factory and hand loads. Some more than others. Does not happen with 38 special. This is a new gun. Read that it's common in these guns. Have you seen this in yours?
@@Scout66 yes. It’s a Rossi thing and is common with most all my .357 and hotter .38 loads. The bulge come from the small feedramp cut into the bottom of the chamber. I have a matching R92 in .44mag. No feed ramp cut and no case bulging. I hate it too. I’ve been trying to only load my my mixed range brass and a small batch of Starline for the rifle. The bulge has mostly bern sizing out and I haven’t had any issues with the resized brass in the rifle or any of the revolvers but it’ll definitely shorten the life of a price of brass.
@@kentuckyrangetime well son of a gun! I'm new to the channel so I haven't seen all of your videos yet. Exactly what I was talking about. I figure I'll use 38 special for fun and new or once fired 357 mag brass for more serious use. Then reuse that in revolvers only. Thanks for the info!
Looking forward to the 38Spc coming up! Did you happen to run a mag tube of the 140gr XTP's through the Rossi? Mine seems to be kinda picky about the bullet's nose profile.....
@@MikeJacobs-c4l i didn’t with the 140gr but have run lots of full tubes of 158gr with no issues. All the different weights of XTP bullets have the exact same nose profile. I don’t even have to change the seating due on my press when changing weights. 😉

@@ducktapepilot Thanks! My only complaint with the Rossi in .357 is it leaves a bulge in the bottom of the case where it’s profiled to help it feed.
I'm glad someone finally tested the 140 gr. xtp bullets in all lengths. Can't wait for the 125 xtp flat point test.

Wow, looks like a really nice general purpose load.
Great series! 😊Any possibility of a similar series of tests on 44 caliber XTPs?

Definitely a helpful series! Thanks for putting in the time to do all of these!
Nice. I wonder how other powders would do through your testing system, such as lil' gun or 4227. Great video series with the xtp and H110. Thanks
great test as always
