Jonathan Meiburg is a wonderful human being who cares for bird and animal life and the music that pours out of him is a reflection of that love for all forms of life... Shearwater is his way of telling his stories and when he sings it is from his heart and is simply astonishingi
I have been a big fan of Shearwater and , for me, it all started with Jonathan Meiburg's amazing vocal talents. His voice is an instrument all unto itself. And his lyrics read like poetry.
Fun fact: that guy who speaks in the beginning (with the long hair) is named Thor Harris and he's in SWANS! Or was, rather. For their recent incarnation. Also in Angels of Light. He's an amazing drummer/homemade instruments player. Really brings the colors to light.
I've got the Rooks album now and it's fantastic! Leviathan, Bound is my favourite track at the minute. Thank you NPR, your Tiny Desk Concerts have got me into so much great music.
Every time some dude opens a falsetto, the Tim Buckley comparisons arise. I think he's got his own sound, but the Mark Hollis influences I heard of before listening to the band are more accurate IMO. Some late Talk Talk to the feel of the music, too. Ah, whatever. Shearwater is a wonderful band. Glad I just discovered them.
12:53 For an extensive follow-up of the little story that Jonathan Meiburg shares before the last song of the set, you could refer to his wonderful book on caracara, titled "A Most Remarkable Creature: The Hidden Life and Epic Journey of the World's Smartest Birds of Prey", published in 2021. Also on that subject, on Shearwater's UA-cam channel, you'll find a great conversation of Meiburg with ornithologist Bret Whitney.
@jzrull88 He has yes, but jonburmeister's suggestion of Mark Hollis is probably closer to what I was thinking. It's also either Ferg Harper or Steve Hogarth (who went on to join Marillion) when they were in the band Europeans back in the eighties - I think it's the way the whole timbre of his voice transforms when he sings the loud/powerful bits
I went and looked it up---the waterphone. Found some great stuff: Mark Korven. I think I know what the concept of the album's about. John Olguin, Pt. Fermin, CA put on a class when i was a kid. People played those instruments out to sea and the whales answered.
When the guitar started up I felt shivers down my spine. When the vocals started I didn't even know what to do-it was that good!

We supported Shearwater on one of their EU dates supporting the Rook album and both Jonathan and Thor were lovely people.
This was my first introduction to Shearwater. I still come back to it. Beautiful set.
I have not listen to Shearwater in a while. Forgot how beautiful their music is.
This album was a revelation frankly. Just stunning
Revelation about what?
@@carmencaamano9434 what a strange question.
I've watched a lot of Tiny Desk concerts, and this one is still my favorite. Amazing sound.
That is one amazing voice.

Came across Sheerwater through music they made for a film about Tristan de Cunha. Fine analogue stuff in a digitally dominated age. Many thanks.
yeah, what a breathtaking session!

when i was a teenager they brought one of those water instruments to an ecological thing on the cliffs at PT Fermin...it changed my life.
Really inspiring to hear the great variety of artists here on NPR's channel. Thanks, NPR!

Thor is really rocking the David St Hubbins look and voice!
Shearwater is an incredible band. And Kim Burke is the most lovely woman in modern music.

the second song is my favorite---
I listen it first time in 2009.
Mesmerizing.
@TheDaddyO44 Perhaps Mark Hollis, of the band Talk Talk (check out the song New Grass).

@elboy86 It's called Rooks, from the album "Rook".
Miss those VHS days
his Voice is epic. Simon and Garfunkly.... but has more feeling ...fantastic
It is not called a waterphone because of Richard Waters but because it has water in it. I know. Richard Waters
