Vilmos Montag (1908-1991): Sonata for Double
Bass in E minor
The Sonata is dedicated to the composer’s brother
Lajos, a renowned Hungarian double bassist.
Although Vilmos Montag himself did not play the
instrument, his Sonata perfectly understands its
technical intricacies, soundscape, and potential
for emotional expressiveness and virtuosity.
The first movement, Allegro Moderato, is lyrical
and grave, and it utilises the entire range of
sonority and capacity for colour and tone contrast
of the instrument.
