On "My Car Story" we're in the North Suburbs of IL on 8-8-21.
We're looking at a 1956 Packard Caribbean Convertible in Black and White Paint. The car features the factory V-8 cylinder engine.
The car's Owner is Claude Ohanesian. Claude’s had this car since 2020. Claude is the President of the Packard Club of Chicago, and he shares he likes this car because it’s the last year for Packard, it’s a “crème dela crème” car (top of the line model), and it has a rare color combo.
ENJOY!

I worked in a new museum that opened in Edmonton, Alberta for awhile this year. My manager has 3 packard " The Four Hundreds" in his collection and at the museum we aquired a 51 packard 200 thats all original even sold new in Edmonton. I am 38 years old and really learned an appreciation for the Packard Motor Company. The big thing for me was learning of Packard-Delco and how GM picked up Packards wiring operations and left the packard name on wiring and fuse panels up to 1996ish as a tribute to the Packard Motor Company. I had the pleasure of going on an exciting trip to Vulcan AB to see a quanset filled with rare and unique packards including a 1942 Packard " One Eighty" coach built car which technically was 1 of 5 coach built cars ever made and believed to be a 1 of 1 with the options it had ( including a perfume compartment ). Revolutionary cars for their time!
Hi Cam Tabler, Happy to read your Manager has 3 Packards :-) Thank you for sharing, and sounds like you're around some cool cars. Lou
@@loucostabile thanks sir! Your videos are full of great content and always appreciate the rarities you have featured. The museum has closed due to covid regulations, but there is alot of interesting history there including a 56 cadillac coupe de ville with the goddess gold package even has the gold wheels, a 55 T Bird which belonged to actor Bill Bixby, a 56 Lincoln Premier, and a Mercury Montclair Sunvalley car! Yesterday's Auto Gallery Foundation is the name.
Thanks, I had forgotten some of that Packard…. Historiography, etc… Incidentally, yiu May be interested in Indiana’s Studebaker& AUBURN-Cord Useums in South Bend & Auburn…. Not to mention several others like the INDY-500 Stuff, etc.Anyways, I’m a car nut from WARSAW IN area, relocated to HELENA Valley MT …… hoping to visit Canadian Siblings soon, etc…..
From the Dagmars to the exhaust outlets and everything in between that is one beautiful car.
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
Hail to the Chief! This Packard truly is fit for a President. Those reversible seat cushions are unique and it's always great to have options. Thanks for visiting and sharing Claude and his Caribbean with us, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to share the executive ride with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
WHY DID THE PUBLIC NOT BUY THESE CARS?
WHY DID THE PUBLIC NOT BUY THESE CARS?
The seat cushions double as a flotation device.
If only Ted Kennedy had been driving a Packard that night.
Great video! Last year of the last true Packard! Biggest Packard V8 engine, 374 c.i., with 10:1 compression and dual Rochester carbs. The interesting thing is the Packard Ultramatic automatic transmission. It was designed inhouse. Later, it became known as the Detroit Gear automatic, which was used in Jaguar and other makes. GM sued because originally it had a "Dual-Drive" shifting quadrants which somehow was exclusive to Cadillac. The Ultramatic was a 2-speed planetary transmission, but, like the Borg Warner automatics(3-speed) of the time it had a lock-up torque converter. Borg Warner later absorbed Detroit Gear. The lock-up function of the torque converter was electrically actuated. There should be a switch on the dash which would switch the torque converter off. On the Jaguars, the switch was marked "2nd gear hold". On the push buttons, "D" position would star the transmission in 1st and automatically shift to 2nd, then lock up the torque converter. In "L" it would start up and remain in 1st gear. Consequently, in the "H" position, it would start up and remain in 2nd. This was like the original Buick Dynaflow, another non-shifting transmission. It depended on the torque converter to do all the work. But, ofcourse, Buick didn't have a lock-up torque converter.
Packard had trouble with it's "Gear Start", "Twin-Ultramatics, introduced in 1954, from overheating and early transmission failures. For 1956, the Ultramatic was totally redesigned, including the introduction of an aluminum case.
The "push button" shift was electric on Packards, like the Edsel's, but Chrysler's push button automatics were mechanical.
Hi Automated Electronics, Happy to share this "last true Packard!" with you :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
Caribbean Queen 👸...this car really looks noble and majestic. There's upscale and then there's this. Roll out the red carpet!!
I am a guy who loves bold colors, but here I am wishing to have a black white Packard, because it fits the car perfectly. The instruments look like royal antique clock and the push buttons right under the steering wheel is unusual, but I guess it was quite ergonomic. The flip over seat cushions is something totally new to me, but now I think all cars should have it. The look under the hood was also interesting - the aircleaner has 4 screws. The side view of the car with that thick white stripe in the middle and with the white wall tires...can we have the '50s back, please?
Beautiful vehicle guys, BEAUTIFUL. This was an HONOR too see, real GEM 💎
Hi Cheeky Demon, High praise :-) Thank you for that the details you enjoy on this "GEM", Lou
@@loucostabile Hello Lou, of course. High praise, such a magnificent and rare ride. You're spoiling us 😄
1955-56 models are my favorite post war Packard's with the Caribbean and the 400s the best of that group. Looking at the style/detail of this car in addition to their unique suspension offered at that time, it is hard to believe Packard could still come out with a car like this being in the financial situation they were in. As much as Cadillac was the king in sales of the luxury cars I feel the Packard was the best looking, followed by the Lincoln Premiere with Cadillac bringing up the rear. With some suspension/transmission issues, the heavy mid-50's competition from the Big 3 and the nervous feelings customers had about the independents at this time surely limited the sales of the 1955-56 Packard lineup. With the 1957-58 Packard's based on Studebakers, the 1956 model shown here was truly the best and the end of the real luxury Packard's. If I had the extra dollars and space I would have a 1955-56 Packard 400. These kind of cars are the best of the My Car Stories. Thank you to the owner and Lou.
Hi Allen, Happy to read this one is a favorite Packard of yours :-) High praise for this episode, and you're welcome, Lou
Thanks for comments…
A family friend was an electrical engineer who spent a few weeks living with us before he went to the South Pacific to work at the Eniwetok H-Bomb tests in 1953. He left his 1949 Packard with us and, as a thank you for our hospitality, sent my mother the pink slip. She drove the Packard from 1953-1961, never leaving our town of Sierra Madre, CA. The starter went out at one point, but, since the town was built on a slope beneath the San Gabriel Mountains, she always compression-started it. Roy, our friend, came back a year later, married and bought a 1954 Packard, fully-equipped, with rear-mounted AC. He followed with a 1956 Caribbean convertible and took us cruising around Los Angeles. We loved the torsion-bar suspension and the power windows and seats. It was such fun spending part of my childhood in Packards. I have thought about buying one, but, living in the Mid-Hudson Valley, I would have to garage it most of the time and stick to our 4-wheel drive SUVs. Perhaps in my next life.
Hi John, Happy to read your Packard stories :-) Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
Very interesting piece of American automotive history. I have never seen too many Packards, much less the Caribbeans. Certainly a line of cars that need to be saved, restored, and protected. About the only time & place I could view these are at Concours-type shows. What an absolutely beautiful car! Thanks Lou and Claude for a great Friday morning treat!
Hi Rusty, Happy to share this one with you :-) Glad to share this "treat" with you, and you're welcome, Lou
A gorgeous vehicle! Thank you for the opportunity to see it. The '56 Caribbean is my favorite Packard model.
Another masterpiece delivered to your viewers. This vehicle defines the word exceptional. And Claude really seems delighted in owning and driving it. Glad there are people like him around that can share the Packard history and maintain his Caribbean for others to see and experience. Thanks for yet another fine episode, Lou.
High praise for this "Masterpiece" :-) My pleasure sharing this one with you Kevin and you're welcome, Lou
Gee, this Packard is just an absolute jewel. So stunning!
Hi Cody, Happy to rea you enjoy this "absolute jewel" :-) Lou
What a beautiful automobile. The Packard and Studebaker story is a sad one in the American automotive story. Merging 2 companies that are losing money rarely if ever works but my God their cars were amazing. Thanks to people like Claude we are still able to enjoy examples of the golden age of automobile design. Thanks, Lou.
Hi Rich, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Thank you for sharing, my pleasure sharing this car with you, and you're welcome, Lou
awesome car lou, you're the only one who brings these classics back to life! thanx, and keep 'em coming!!
Hi Mouse, Happy to bring this one to the Channel to share with you :-) Lou
Another automotive jewel. I love that dash, it screams classy and the shifter blew my mind. Thanks for bringing me one that I didn't know about.
You're still the best on UA-cam, keep them coming Lou 👍👍
Hi Pat, Happy to read you enjoy this "Jewel" :-) Thank you for the kind words on being the best on UA-cam, I appreciate the encouragement, Lou
The “cathedral-style” headlights and taillights certainly set Packards apart from other automobiles. Strange though, that it doesn’t appear to have “power brakes.”
Hi Fred, Thank you for viewing and sharing the details you notice, Lou
It does have power brakes. They were standard equipment on that model.
"It's a beautiful day for a Packard" I smiled at that, always a beautiful day for a beauty of a car.
Hi Jim, Happy to read you're able to share a "beautiful day for a Packard" ride with us :-) Lou
@@loucostabile Don't watch every video but when you have one on REALLY classic iron I love them. Claude is a fortunate man to own a beautiful vehicle as this.
Also wanted to share that when I was in High School (a LOOOONG) time ago I had a chance to pick up a pre war Packard, couldn't be borrow or steal the money to do it. When I see someone caring for these magnificent automobiles I am not unhappy.
I like the idea of the right hand push button drive with Park, the Chrysler cars of that time were left hand units with no Park gear, totally inadequate hand parking brake system for a large car or any car. Super nice Caribbean thanks for the ride Lou.
Hi Chris, Glad to read you enjoy this Caribbean :-) You're welcome, Lou
Thanks for comments.. interestingly, my Parents had the later 1959 Dodge Coronet NINE pass/ wagon / Rear Facing seat/ beige/ White /Chrome// with push Button, I had to drive it early in my Driving @ age 15…I Did not care for Push Button , seemed to work OK THOUGH, BUT Luckily My Dad found a 1954 **2DR/ FORD V8// 57 Engine/289-4BBL, MILD **CUSTOM….LIVING close to S Bend Indiana we seen a few Packards around too…..
What an interesting car! Looking at the push-button trans & prototypical fins, you can really see Packard and MoPar were on the same wavelength in 1956. Squared off blades, dual fin-mounted antennae, and the rear light towers with the little red reflector, etc. I can also see where '58-60 Lincoln got their instrument cluster ideas. Those seat cushions really remind me of sofas and chair sets from the '50s. PS: Now I get the joke...there's an old stag film from the era, in which a man and woman park for a tryst in the country. As the man removes the seat cushions from the car and places them on the ground for the woman to lie on, a title is inter-cut, saying "those with Packards will understand this." I never understood it...until now!
Hi GLC2013, Many years later the mystery of the removable seat cushions is solved! :-) Lou
When I hear the name Packard I think luxury and quality and this car totally exemplifies this!!! If you look at the profile of this car the body curves starting at the headlight going up, levels out and then curves downward toward the rear, I have never noticed that before and it is a very unique look especially with a car from the 50's. The car also has a bit of a rake with the rear up, really giving it a hot rod look, and those hood scoops add to that hot rod aspect as well. This car is full of nifty little details that make this a super special ride for sure and I absolutely Love it!!! Great car Lou!!!
Hi Hobiemarty, Happy to read this car fits the Packard description for quality and luxury. Glad to read you "absolutely Love it!!!" :-) Lou
I can only imagine how hard it must be to restore something like this with so few parts around
Hi Lady Dimitrescu, Sunday drives with fewer cars around is a good idea for this one :-) Lou
That car was missing just a couple of Parts like the air cleaner or a tail light I couldn't imagine how much time and money it would take to try to find those things.
@@jiveturkey9993 Yup, but around 1990 when I was restoring my 1965 Mustang there were a few companies around that sold replacement parts for it. It's a thriving business it seems!
@@mr.blackhawk142 Thing of it is, there are a lot more '65 Mustangs than there are '56 Pakards.
Gorgeous Packard Caribbean ! Perry White drove an earlier Model on the Superman TV Series. What a machine ! Thanks Lou !
Hi Rudy, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Thank you for sharing the TV trivia too :-) You're welcome, Lou
Actually, Perry white drove a Nash Ambassador since Nash sponsored the Superman TV show.
Hi, Lou! As Claude says, "creme de la creme"! This was about as exquisite as a car could be in 1956, fit for a president or a king! And as Lily demonstrates, treats the ladies very well, too! Looks great everywhere...Hawaii, the Netherlands, the Philippines, and especially the Caribbean! It was pretty exclusive too. The convertible set you back $5,995, and just 276 were built in total, along with 263 hardtops. If Elvis owned anything other than a Cadillac, I would bet he had one of these parked at Graceland!
Many thanks to you, Claude, Rich and Lily (I noticed them on the sidewalk, 3:15) for taking all of us along in this Fifties dreamboat!
Hi iswc27, Happy to read the details you share and thank you. My pleasure sharing this one with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Love this car. I myself own a '56 Packard 400 with many of the same features like the push-button transmission, but I've been in my friend's Caribbean Convertible a couple of times as well. Beautiful craftsmanship by Packard. Surprisingly many Packards here in Sweden!
Hi Filip, Happy to read you "Love this car" :-) Glad to read you have a cool car too, Lou
No doubt this is the best looking Packard I've ever seen. 🏆 Claude. Thank you once again Lou for bringing us another outstanding car!
High praise :-) You're welcome David, Lou
I liked the looks of the 52. But, for sure 1950s styling the 55 and 56 was the epitome of late Packard styling. This car, too, is N I C E.

Hi D Steely, Happy to read this one is your "absolutely favorite car of my whole life" :-) You're welcome, Lou
56 was a good year. so elegant and classy thanks for sharing
My pleasure sharing this car with you :-)
Beautiful example from a bygone era of American automotive design and interesting features. With so few examples in existence, I can understand the temptation to turn these into static concours displays. I’m glad Claude resists that temptation and drives it. Thanks for the video, Lou. ~ John
Hi John, High praise for the design of this car :-) Fun to ride and drive this one, and you're welcome, Lou
Packards are beautiful cars😍 " Ask The Man Who Owns One! " Thanks Lou!
Hi motorTranz, NICE! You're welcome, Lou
Claude, you are a very blessed man. One of only 13 made. Dang, this car could fetch a million plus dollars. It is a beauty. You must be so proud? Nice find there, Lou. might be one of the rarest yet? Larry
Hi Larry, Happy to read you enjoy that Claude is blessed, and happy to share his car which blesses us too :-) Glad to read you appreciate the rarity of this car, Lou
Maybe only 13 of this paint scheme, but I’ve understood that there were about 300 of the Caribbean convertibles made.

What a great car, they were a mile ahead with all the car makes in the States back in the 50s 60s and 70s, the Packard a great one.
Hi Philip, Happy to read you enjoy this "great one" :-) Lou
Packards happen to be before my time but have to say this clean '56 sure seems an excellent example. The quality of this brand speaks volumes here. Thanks guys for the vid, really enjoyed it.
Hi Bruce H., Happy to read you were able to go back to 1956 with us on this video :-) Glad to read the quality shows on this video, Lou
Thanks for the Packard Caribbean presidential ride. This car is far better than today's luxury cars. Has a powerful engine and modern push button transmission that will last forever!
Hi Juan, My pleasure sharing the Presidential treatment with you :-) Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
Between the introduction of the 1949 Ford Custom with a flathead V8 until the mid-sixties, America had no peer with respect to style .....none. Nobody came even close. That Packard is the most beautiful car I have ever seen in these series. The instruments look like jewellery.......well said Lou. Thanks Claude and Lou for sharing this stunning car.

Lou,you've done it again! 55 and 56 Caribbeans were the ultimate expression of Packard luxury. This one (as noted) is one I've never seen. Sad SWAN (pun intended ) song for a great car line ! Too bad George Mason's plan to combine Nash , Hudson , Studebaker, and Packard fell through. 57 and 58 Packardbakers were said to be some of the best Studebakers ever built.

Thank you President Packard! That black beauty has some of the quirkiest quirks ever seen 🤔. The pushbutton transmission on a usual gear selector stalk, the little side light. And I do believe the absolute first and only convertible with a convertible interior!
Hi Terry M, The convertible interior on the convertible was a new one for me :-) Lou

Loved the look of the trunk badge and taillights on this model year

I love seeing cars of Presidents of car clubs. You always know it's going to be a "creme de la creme" model, which this one is. What sets this Caribbean apart to me is the two-tone black and white color scheme. It gives the car a very classy look. So often are the triple white/salmon/black models seen which is okay, but a little hokey. This was a perfect car for someone like a bank President. Sporty yet dignified.
Hi Joseph, Happy to share the President of the Packard Club's car with you :-) Enjoyed reading your comment on this car, and glad your along for the ride, Lou

Another great video Lou. I don't know much about Packards, but I knew that 1956 was the last year for them. I have always wanted to see one in person but haven't had the chance to yet. I had recently read a book about Babe Ruth and he was a big fan of Packard cars.

Not such a surprise this example is owned by the Packard club president. I am not a 50's fan but this car is perfect in design and better than new. That dash couldn't be more beautiful. It's in the right hands which is great news - the Caribbean is getting a tad pricey these days and this is an exceedingly rare paint scheme.

Guy I knew in Harrisburg PA's dad had a '56....pink (Fuschia?) white and chocolate brown. Fantastic car. We used to see it around town and (secret until now) I knew about the leveling suspension so if the car sat outside the nitespot too long, I'd sit on the rear bumper and watch the front reach for the sky. Came the day, it disappeared and was replaced by a really pedestrian '62 DeVille. Joke: guess what car the guy who sold him the Caddy drove for the next few years? Really saw dad coming!

This may be the ultimate car you have ever profiled. I would be afraid to own it. So many irreplaceable parts! I would never drive it on the street out of fear someone would run a stop sign and damage it! Packard tried so hard to survive but they just couldn’t.

Grandfather in law bought the 53 for his kids going off to UT in Austin Texas, this year I think he had a sedan, he was a real Texas oil man and he drove Packards. When we were living with the mother in law she bought a Rolls Royce in 1986. I took my first drive in it with Granny and she proclaimed to me that it rode like a Packard! Her story was always "Daddy drove Packards and that fancy English car was just like the cars they drove back when. She never accepted the idea that a Rolls was a superior car, and within a few years I think we all decided she was right! That Rolls Royce was not the car a Packard was.

Great Car, Owner, and video Lou! In it's day, Packard was America's premiere luxury motorcar! I'm sure that Claude is familiar with my good friends Dan and Fred Kanter, owners of Packard Industries, in Boonton, NJ!
Hi Jeffrey, Happy to read you enjoy this car & Care Taker :-) Thank you for the kind words on this video, Lou
Hi Mr. President & Lou: Very cool car from Detroit • Cheers from the Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Hi trainroomgary, Happy to read you think this car is "very cool" :-) Cheers, Lou
Lou will there be cars in heaven? My research says no so you should change your channel to "Car Heaven"... I give you permission to do so. Another home run of a story. God bless
Such a shame companies like Packard didn't stand the test of time.
Hi David, Hmmm, Hi I'm Lou with another episode of Chariots of fire! :-) Happy to read this one is Home run! Lou
Jay Leno has a 55 Caribbean. He has a nice demo of how the torsion bar set up works on these cars....Check it out....super cool.
Hi blackscotydog, Thank you for the tip on Jay's cool car, Lou
Beautiful! And to see it in it's natural environment... The Great American Suburb.
I wonder who the original owner was... Who had the great taste (and Money) to pick that model over every other American Dream machine in 1956.
Hi Swilko Barfington III, Not sure who the Original Owner was. and happy to share this car with you :-) Lou
Wow, a button shifter technology in 1950s car, im very impressed. I thought the technology was invented in sport cars and 2020s hyundai. I never thought about this....

Nice Bob Bob :-)
The exclusive and unobtainable '56 Packard Caribbean convertible. If you're supposed to "Ask the man who owns one", you'd better do it now. Mr. Ohanesian is likely the last man who does.

It's always sad to think about what happened to Packard. The brand was considered the American Rolls Royce in terms of quality and prestige. But after the war in order to move vehicles, Packard started to produce lower cost models with varying degree of quality control and over time cheapen their mark. Finally, in 1957 when Packard was bought by Studebaker and became essentially a way to market smaller Studebaker Presidents, Hawks and the like as Packards with often clumsy re-grilling and re-badging, it was the final insult to the mark.

Nice choice and with that classic color combo - thnx for the treat. . . :>/
Hi Dr. Candor, My pleasure sharing this "treat" with you :-) Lou
I have often wondered what the Packard's would look like today had the company survived???
I'm sure it would still be a luxury trend setter!! A beautiful example for sure! Thanks to you and Claude for sharing this awesome example of 50's excess!!
Hi George S, That would be interesting to see a "modern" design :-) You're welcome, Lou
I don't know about Hawaii, Lou...the island might sink! Gosh, she is gorgeous.
Hi Stephanie Luigon, I hope not, I had a nice time there on my Honeymoon. Glad you enjoy the looks of this car, Lou
Beautiful car!! I was hoping he would explain how the button shifter worked. If it was a cable affair like Chrysler or if it activated an electric motor like the Edsel.
Hi JWelchon, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Now that is a dream car 🚗 😍
Happy to read this is a "dream car" for you :-)
Beautiful car it was a step up from Cadillac looked more stately, soviets had a limousine inspired by this design kept making it until 1981 it was called Seagull I guess you can meet seagulls in the caribbean.

What a beauty! Packard should have restyled completly in 48, ditch the Clipper, offer a V8 take the GM hydra-matic and build nothing but luxury cars, up to 50-51, they would easily have sold everyone of them and made a ton of money... The 51 restyling compared to Cadillac, was atrocious but so well updated by Teague with the 55's, old hat management was their undoing, they came out of WW2 so strong, what a pity, they coud have build their own bodies and not make the deadly mistake of buying Studebaker, Nance had some good ideas but came in way to late, the concept of volume over prestige eventually did them in... This all seems logical but is speculating with hindesight of course, eventually, all the independents were to small to compete with the big three...
