  • The pelvic floor, prolapse & lifting weights in the menopause. I’m Rae from live yourself young I’m 55 years old and my passion is weight training and today I want to talk about the forgotten muscle when it comes to strength training, the pelvic floor. The one muscle no personal trainer has ever talked to me about is my Pelvic floor muscle! I don’t know if it’s the subject matter or the location of the subject matter! So why do I want to talk about it?
Because my doctor told me… that most women over 50 who have had children have some form of pelvic organ prolapse and most don’t even know about it because they have no symptoms, or assume any symptoms they’re having are “normal”. And as my passion is to help women over 50 to not only start weight training but to carry on lifting for life I want to also encourage you to lift safely.
This has been such a great topic for me to research as I have learnt some eye opening pelvic floor facts and I have added loads of useful links for you below!

I'm a personal trainer since 1998. Had 11 children born at home ( by choice ) 5 - 10 lbs and over, 1-11 lbs. Been lifting weights since I was 42 years old. Discovered I had a rectal prolapse about 15 months ago, I'm guessing due in part to the loss of estrogen from menopause. I added phyto - estrogens to my supplements, creatine and a number of vitamins. I can use the heavy leg press without negative side effects and in fact I suspect that strengthening my glutes, quads, and lower body in general have improved my pelvic floor situation. I am careful to exhale with the effort and be attentive to anything that doesn't feel right but I have no issues that compromise my quality of life. Next year I'll be 70, with 24 grand children. We have a hobby farm with a small flock of sheep that I keep for fiber ( spinner and weaver ) and I shear all 20 every spring. In my opinion, the weight training, diet and supplements are critical to quality of life.

My husband is a Personal Trainer and he sent me this video. I love lifting weights just started doing it recently for about two years now at home. I’m 32, and we have had four children. I was feeling a bit discouraged thinking I may have to stop. But this was encouraging, I’ll check out other videos. And I’m going to get checked soon. Im glad my husband is going to continue to educate himself on this to help others. Thank you for sharing this information.

I watched till the end. Good info. Im 58 and working on slowing down my weight train and exercise. I cannot do strengthen my muscles and body in 2 months when it took years of doing little. I need to be more focused and not try to do all these trainings in 5mins.
    God bless from Canada

Thank you Rae! Just starting strength training today at 52; so glad I found your videos. Please keep them coming. Menopause and my lack of motivation has done a real number on my body for the last 1 1/2 years. I’m hoping I can get it back. 🙏. My best to you.

As I get a little older I am excited about having children didn’t realise both posture and childbearing could create potential prolapse. Thank you so much because now I am even more committed to preparing my body for children and making sure it’s strong before during and after. 🥰🥰 also amazing video and love the backhoe music too

🍑 very good content Rae ...I was thinking about this very subject when I decided to go back to weights, there is always the worry when you get to our age that lifting will give you a prolapse,my core has always been weak after 4 Caesarians so I am interested in strengthening that...

I will certainly will check out the professional specialists 🥸too! that you shared. I am thinking strengthening this area will help my weakness in my lower abs obliques following an inguinal ligament repair 🥴(caused by a cycling injury)🚲. Thanks again for all your resource. You're awesome. 🤓
