Our Drift Week 2020 Session Did NOT End Well...

As soon as we heard that the Drift Week 2020 squad was coming through California, we couldn't say no to a solid session at our favorite home drift tracks: Apple Valley Speedway. Vin and Hert roll out with their own cars to join in on the Drift Week party train. But what started out as a fun day of driving, did NOT end well - it ended with a heavy reminder of how important fire safety is in motorsports: especially on something driven as hard as a drift car can be driven. Rudy Hansen's Corvette C4 had been running great all week, but all it takes is one (sometimes small) engine issue to turn your world upside-down - and we had to see his pride and joy melt down to the ground. Absolutely rough.

Yeah that was a pretty freaking stupid. Good for him for trying but going face first while in a vulnerable position is NOT worth it.
I was just coming to comment the SAME thing! HOLY SHIT ARE THEY LUCKY!!!? Not ONE of them was wearing ANY type of fire retardant clothing or fire safety gear and yet like all 10 of them were right up on that FUEL FIRE with hand-held extinguishers!?!?!?!?! Luck doesn't even begin to describe what happens there. Had any one of them been there when that fuel sprayed out the back they may very well be DEAD right now or at the very least severely burnt from head to toe! smh... wow....
@@TheHoonigans marc is saying that guy wouldve fucking died if he had stayed there just a few seconds longer. all extinguishers were spent, no other way to put a guy out whos doused with flaming fuel. i have no doubt he would be dead if he had not moved. i watched adams video last week and it didnt show how unsafe that was. they kept saying they almost had it out, just one more extinguisher!! bullshit... it was never even close to being out. i understand the desire to try and keep his car from burning to the ground but after the initial attempt EVERYONE should have been 100 ft away from that thing.

@@kevinhibbard320 Yeah, sold it to them on the cheap since he didn't need it any more. Not only was it a way to get home, but also a functional drift car to use for the time being. At least he'll have something for seat time while he builds the replacement car.

Kill switch and fire bottle likely could have saved it. Should be required for any vehicle with a cage
@@Hole_Motorsports Maybe not, on another video the car was on fire a good time before it was noticed. Plus the track had little to no fire extinguishers
Michael Graper kill switch would have stopped the fuel pump which you hear someone yelling about. Fire bottle sprays directly on the tank as well as the interior and engine bay if set up properly. You be surprised how quickly they can knock down a fire.

The track had no fire response team or provisions in place. The only fire safety on the entire premises was the little fire extinghisher bottles people keep under their seats. Wtf... Imagine if someone were trapped in their vehicle when it caught fire! Guaranteed death! This should be an absolute embarassment for the organizers of this motorsport event. Safety is no joke.
This @12:22 is PRECISELY why your (modified) car should ALWAYS have a kill-switch in it, to cut power to any and all pumps in case of emergency.

@@Username-2 They're all so fortunate that no one died or got caught in that spray of fuel; I've watched that scene over several times and it looks like a flame-thrower from WW2 shooting out of there!? And with the number of ppl that were standing RIGHT THERE just seconds prior... sheeessh!!! That could of been so much worse.

@@TheHoonigans I heard Luke Fink was nice enough to send them home in his car, proof the car community still has some heart! Glad to see Rudy and his girl are safe, close calls, but lives are a lot harder to replace than cars..

When I watch the in car video I keep thinking it looks like it's sped up because there is just so much going on between the wheel movement, hand break, changing gears. It's crazy. The amount of skill it takes to manage all of that just blows me away. I think my brain would break trying to do that.
I see alot of comments about this fire I only have one thing to say about it, thank God for all of you willing to stand there and try to save this couples hardwork, you obviously have a deep love for the sport that we should all appreciate and admire. Also amazing that people came forward and donated to help offset the great loss they suffered glad they are safe.
This may sound like a stupid question, but we're those the right kind of fire extinguishers? Most looked like standard Co2 & those aren't meant for oil fires- especially fuel. Used to work for county fire & safety, I don't know much, but do know that makes a difference & why we were required to have 4, one of each + backups. STAY SAFE GUYS!
For everyone asking about a safety/fire team on site there Isn’t one, this is a old go kart track that’s become a drift track now it’s not a big funded facility. When you rent the track or host a event you are responsible for insuring the event. From what’s been said this guy was aware of a “small fuel leak” and did not take care of it prior to sending it... it’s a shame the car was a complete loss and I feel for the guy but not taking care of a fuel leak then blaming the track is just wack in my opinion. The track is now required to have 5 big fire extinguishers on site and that’s added another 500$ deposit to be able to rent the track for a day... end of the day just a shit situation all around

This is why, at our tracks there is no racing done until extinguishers and experienced people are set around the track. If you want to race it is simple, we are all volunteers, but if we aren't there you simply clog the pits. Always sad to see a race car go like that, as an experienced fire marshal I do my best to prevent it. All the best from down under, New Zealand

My favorite part about this drift week is that it brings back the old days of when you got your first car and you’d hoon it. You’d do some mods to it like a welded diff, exhaust, etc. and take it out with your friends to “Mexico.” No trailers and no bullshit. Just dudes being dudes
Scary fire, thank god that the driver is ok. Plastic/glassfibre tends to be a fierce fire especially at those windy conditions.

Wow that's insane. Glad no one was hurt especially with how long they hung around that fire. They definitely did everything they could to try and save it.

Imagine the feeling of looking at your car burnt to a crisp, across the country from home. After having a blast with it all week. That's defeating. Was a nice C4
First up.
This is a good reminder to wear proper PPE, all the time, always.
Second, don’t try to put out a pressurized fuel fire unless you can isolate the pump.
Third, your 1/2lb BC extinguishers arent going to do anything. Stop trying.
Fourth, this should have ended terrible for a few people. Don’t be stupid, you aren’t going to put this out once it’s caught.
Fifth, it’s not hard to have at least ONE safety truck, bad shit happens quickly, you better be prepared to deal with it.
Source; 22 years of being a fireman and a paramedic with 18 of those being part of motorsports safety.
Just a general question..have u guys seen anyone mess around with the new 86 (ie rotary swaps or extreme body kits)...I want to see if it’s possible to get this thing built as a DRIFT BEAST

We all tried putting out the flames, but unfortunately the fire won. The support on Rudy’s fundraiser is doing really well! We don’t doubt he’ll be back stronger next year!

Sucks there car burnt down, but as they say when you play with fire and don't have the right safety equipment your just looking to get burnt.
I only say this cause Ive had vehicles burn to ground cause of fuel fires so i now make sure the right measures are in place, but accident's still happen

Well glad rudy got out and no one else got hurt. Sucks about a project burning up. Now everyone that blames the fire crew/track safety needs to rethink the situation. Crews only get involved if lives are endangered. Once fuel is engulfing the car its a bomb and the people around the car should have thought about that. Mica is lucky he didnt have anything happen to him or his car. People's safety first guys and yes bigger extinguishers but also check ur cars if ur tharshing them.

This is one of those situations where you'll never be able to think clearly, i've gotten burned trying to put something burning out... no luck. about all you can do in hindsight is try to drive the vehicle away from teh spilling fuel which is impossible... sad day, glad the donations worked out though...good job guys

They should keep a self fire extinguisher in the car like if a sensor catches fire it will spray it in the engine and trunk. Idk? I will donate though hopefully the insurance covers that.

Damn I feel for the dude in the c4. Like 9 months ago my precious Audrey threw a rod through the block and caught fire right outside Vacaville. She was a '98 b5 with the 2.8 v6, Paxton e92 supercharger e85, 6 speed swap, super trick diffs, kw coilovers, it was a modest build but I fuckin loved that car so much I had it absolutely DIALED. Then, dumb ass me, racing some squid in a vette banged off limiter in 4th and the factory rod with 312k miles let go. Ya, rotating assembly had over 300k on it with weisco pistons and 2.7t heads. Car was an absolute champion I literally cried watching her burn. But now I have a '01 rs4 that's on my rotisserie getting all welded up as we speak.

Wouldn’t you want a cage in a drift car, especially a corvette for a more ridged overall frame structure? I would think drift would be really hard on a corvette without a cage.

Do you guys use a line lock so it just the front brakes on the pedal and the hand brake for the rear while your drifting?
No, in most cases we run dual real clippers. One caliper functions off the foot brake, and the other caliper functions off the handbrake which uses a remote reservoir that’s mounted to the hand brake.
