My home turf.....Brought up in Croxley Green near Rickmansworth.....Played near the stretch of canal that runs through Cassiobury Park as a child.....And so began my love of canals and narrowboats. In the 60's we had 'Bargee' children do short spells at our junior school as they passed through....All the best Tricia and Neil.....
OMG, Rich. I'm so pleased that you skirted death. Don't blame you for contemplating the meaning of life. The cappabarra were certainly a surprise to me.
The music and photography around 14:30 was wonderfully peaceful, one of the things that draws me to narrow boat videos. Then a few minutes later... well Rich, I'm glad you're safe and in one piece!!! As a retired first responder I have felt that "shaky" feeling quite a few times. After a good night's sleep, it will turn into a nice "war" story.
I so envy your British winters! (Commenting from here in Canada.) Even after the winter solstice, we still have three or four months before we start to see plants come to life again.
That was a close fall, glad you're ok Rich, hope there's been no after effects. I'm sure some of Fran's bread will have helped you recover. Another great vlog, thanks both. I think Enbilulu was looking after you!!
Crikey..... a scary moment!! You must have been so shaken by that!! Thank goodness your boat was not further back with you standing on the back!!!! Your guardian angel was looking over you in that second!! Xx
Sleepless in Ontario...Although I enjoy your recent videos, there is something about these early videos. They are full of life as it is lived, even as a tree falls. Glad you escaped unscathed Rich.
those wagon wheels were half the size of what we used to get...we do not need the new high speed link..trains travel fast enough now....wow...you were very lucky to miss that tree falling....a very near miss....
PS By the way, back in the 80's I lived in South Bedfordshire and worked all over Bucks, Hertfordshire and at times Cambridgeshire. Absolutely loved the place. Played rugby in Hitchin - before my knees finally gave out! As always, thank you for these videos!
The Wagon Wheel size was the obvious question to post here until Rich had the fright of his life. Blimey. Glad you are OK. Bet that got the heart racing a bit! You probably found yourself choosing moorings based on local flora after that!
Whoa, that _was_ a close call. Scary. It might take me three cases of wagon wheels to recover from that kind of thing. But, seriously, am glad for all y'all that you weren't hit and hurt.
Great vid. Holy S**T, that was a close call with the tree, someone was watching over you that day, shame you didn’t get it on cam that would have gone viral We’re on the G.U heading north, if you pass us give us a honk on your horn Mark & Deb
Huge huge number of narrowboats up the River Chess moored or stored along that the canal there. Was the first time i had ever seen how people lived or stored their boats. 1999.
WOW!!! That really was a close call, Rich, no wonder you needed a strong cuppa, glad you're Ok. On another note; that's a wonderful, comforting, soporific purring note to your engine, it would have had me in the canal sooner or later. Do look after yourselves and each other.
Thanks Anthony. Maybe tempting fate, but the engine is sounding good at the moment when moving. It just vibrates a little on idle. Another job to tackle! Fran x
Hi Ann. Rich was fine. We were moored up under trees in strong winds a few days ago and I did think of this episode. Don't remember butterscotch wagonwheels, but they sound wonderful.
Wow!!as you say,not your time Rich. Take care I don't think Fran wants to be a solo boater yet. Great vlog and good music. TREES, They have branches everywhere.
What an absolute narrow escape that you just had are my god I just watched it and can't believe my eyes anyway yourself for a nice gift drink tonight and dear good luck in your future
Hi Guys, great vlog, think you need to buy a lottery ticket Richard !! Makes you appreciate how fragile life can be. Glad your both ok, regards Mark & Zac

Out of hospital, boy that was a shock, you just never know whats on the cards. Making the most of your life is so important, just as you two are doing. Rich you where tree mendously lucky to escape being clobbered...

Thanks Nick. Rich certainly had a lucky escape that day. Don't be too out of by the smoke. It was g although we won't go back to soon. Well have a look at your blog
Lucky chappie , some weight there in that tree , salvage it’s your Rich 😅, As far as HS2 goes I’m with you on that one , whitmore Heath Staffordshire my neck of the woods , folk being driven out scandalous , progress 🤬🤬
Hope the shock has now passed big fella and your ok now ..wrong time ..right place 6ft away that'll do ..safe ..and it missed the boat thank God.. a very good reason to have a fridge full of beer on board at all times me thinks ..just to calm the nerves when required ..all the best to you both...safe journey...
Nice vid guys. Being Pagan it’s nice to see someone else celebrating ‘Yule’ on the winter solstice. We thought you two were a bit more connected to nature than most. Enjoy your Yule celebration. Hopefully we’ll bump into you on the cut.
Made my weekend as usual you guys. I am pagan in my beliefs and am itching for the solstice, wishing you both a fantastic Yule and drinking a tea toast to the fates for your narrow escape from a banging headache !
Thank you Sue. I'm counting down the days to solstice now. I'm driving rich mad. I'm sure I can feel a difference in the light and hear it in the birdsong after solstice. Christmas Day almost disappears into the background. I hope you enjoy it Fran x
Hi. Been watching your vlogs but not in order so now having a in order binge. Don’t know if you know but unfortunately Waggon Wheels are not vegetarian as they have gelatine in, sorry. Glad the tree missed you. Keep up the good work xx
That means you will be watching some twice- glutton for punishment😁. I think we were still eating dairy products when this was recorded. We probably wouldn't buy them now although we still only call ourselves 'veganish' as it is so difficult to be 100% egg, gelatin and dairy free
wow - just wow, close call indeed. Bit random that - a bunch of Mandarin Ducks in the middle of nowhere!!! and the sad demise of Pooh (well it looked like Pooh) hanging from a beam in a disused warehouse. Great vlog guys and Rich - go buy a lottery ticket.
I think 5 seconds was an exaggeration. I reckon you were 2 seconds from meeting your maker! With that luck you need to buy a lottery ticket but only if you want to damage a beautiful existence. I loved Fran’s reasons for favouring the winter solstice over Christmas. When you mentioned you were near Watford I thought you need to visit the beautiful Hare Krishna temple founded by George Harrison but I expect you’re well past that now. If you go on a Friday you get a fabulous vegetarian dinner free! Thanks as always for a great video, excluding your near death experience obviously.
Loving your videos. Seen them all. Always a joy to see you two enjoying life. Fran, I too suffer from cold hands (I froze them a few times as a foolish younger lad here in Canada). My circulation is really poor. I have found that a pair of 'Under Armour' gloves and some fleece gloves keep them toasty down to the -10C mark. Below that, I have heavier gloves but the great thing with Under Armour is that I can still operate my fiddly camera with them on. Have to take off the outer gloves but it's almost like I'm not wearing any gloves at all. Give them a try. Holy crappies Richard! That was just too close for a healthy heart. Thankful you are okay. Thanks for the great vids kids and keep them coming. (buy a hard hat maybe).
@@FloatingOurBoat Awesome. Just think of these as Long Johns for your hands. You should still have a pair of gloves over them and your hands should be toasty warm :)

I think Rich was holding a new "Bite Size" version. ;o) Either that, or he has hands like shovels! I have some Wagon wheels, and I just measured one. 75mm / 3 inches across. Rich's looked smaller. They were the size of bin lids when I was a lad...
My mother and two of her friends used to cycle from the village to just out side Slough ,to the burton factory and spend I think it was 5or6 hrs a night 6 nights a week packing wagon wheels or what ever the line was that night. I always remember her coming home some nights with paper bags full of wagon wheels or as I said whatever the line was that night .They were allowed to help them selves to the bin at the bottom of the line which caught the broken and not correct or the one's that got missed when packing them!!!!!. The bin's would be taken at the end of a shift and dump in to pig bins out side. Anyway after several months of her working there , I really didn't want to see a wagon wheel or chocolate marsh mellow again. in fact it's been years since I've even looked at one . But your right they are so much smaller and I'll bet so much dearer. Anyway I meant to say this earlier glad you are out of London all that trash in the water is so bad it's almost depressing. Someone is watching over you Rich.if you believe in that sort of thing.. someone is watching.
Know what ? I thought your brush with a fallen tree was that bit early in your vlog when the coffees nearly went! But NO! My word, man! That was close! Makes yer think, eh? Glad you’re ok. And... I agree with others. Waggon Wheels were the size of dinner plates when I was a kid.
Those hot pocket things stick them in your pockets will last longer warm your coat up keep you warm, just remember to take them out your pocket when getting off the boat.
Imagine the horror if you were stranded miles away from an offy... Proper planning prevents piss poor performance, or in your case, prior purchase precludes paucity of Portuguese plonk. Have one for me. ;o)
if you get chance, moor up at the Rising Sun in Berkhamsted and try a pint of drop bar or side pocket, and enjoy an all day breakfast at the Bluebell cafe at Marsworth reservoirs - best one on the cut!
Hi Gwen and Mr Piper!!. we were in the Rising Sun last week and loved the drop bar. What a great pub. Had to wait around while Archie had a haircut locally....what a shame!
Floating Our Boat try download a film called the Bargee with Harry H Corbett and Ronnie Barker, a lot of the scenes were filmed from Bulls Bridge up to the 3 locks pub at Soulbury, see how many film locations you recognise 😀
Thats probably what kids today call an adrenaline rush ! I’m with you on the winter solstice thing , it’s something I focus on each winter to help me get through the dark nights but did you know that whilst the solstice is the shortest day, the earliest sunsets happen between December 9th and 13th so this time next week the sun sets a little later each day 😊
That's wonderful Martin, thank you. I have tried in the past to understand why the sunrise and sunset times change differently but I can't get my head around it. I'm just so happy to know the nights will be getting lighter. Fran x
Very scary, my brother had a similar experience several years ago on a golf course, he had just walked under a big tree and jut behind him bang a branch of about a ton hit the deck, it shakes you up, glad your OK.
Life is not done with you yet Rich. It's a sign tho' that you can never count on tomorrow. Give thanks to be safe for another day! And another video. Re: Wagon wheels, I remember them being as big as my hand, what happened to them?
Bless you - and many more years! as always - a great episode-as-always great sounds/music -good mixture of views-consistent good quality. it must be fun to see people’s lovely gardens from the water. i Love Capybara! good on you to spot those! And you went shopping for free! it looks like the universe is smiling on you! i would be interested to hear how your experience with the falling tree might change your view of boat safety- for example are you going to wear a helmet / bycicle helmet now when steering or keep to the center of the canal? 💌🍀🤞
Thanks Gail. You can never protect yourself from everything or indeed waste time worrying about it. We take as many BB Ty precautions as we feel are necessary and always look out for each other. As professional gardeners, we love looking at the gardens knowing that we don't have to work on them. Thank you for watching and for your comments. Fran x

if you get chance, moor up at the Rising Sun in Berkhamsted and try a pint of drop bar or side pocket, and enjoy an all day breakfast at the Bluebell cafe at Marsworth reservoirs - best one on the cut!
here here with regards to the Riser in Berko, see you there !
Did I see Mandarin ducks at 16.50m .? Wow , that was close Rick....makes you think right enough 🙄
Yes they were mandarin ducks. So beautiful.
Very lucky that tree hissed you.....
It was quite a scare.
It was just not your "time" Rich and I agree about the winter solstice. It is the turning point to better seasons.

We can't even get a twenty mile commuter train. The use to be big three get in the way every time

Thank you Jon.

Very scary, my brother had a similar experience several years ago on a golf course, he had just walked under a big tree and jut behind him bang a branch of about a ton hit the deck, it shakes you up, glad your OK.
Thank you Albert. It did shake us up, but we're both ok and you can't worry about things you have no control over.

Life is not done with you yet Rich. It's a sign tho' that you can never count on tomorrow. Give thanks to be safe for another day! And another video.
Re: Wagon wheels, I remember them being as big as my hand, what happened to them?
Did we all just grow up? Everything here seems to be getting smaller except shopping centres and house prices!!
