What venue was it? I can't remember if I was there, but, the venue would help. I can't imagine I would have missed this, but, I guess if I didn't know about it...
Vinnie is unbelievable. Talk about "dynamic". He's a chops monster in one moment - and then laying down the phatest groove the next. Hunt really kills it this evening. Allan is always Allan. Glad I got to see him live 3 times. The greatest - ever.
unreal. Everyone is playing odd groupings, going over the bar line, doing hemiolas, and yet they all move as one organic entity. Unreal tightness. This was captured on 'Secrets.'
This looks like a photo from a drum clinic at Drum World in San Francisco were I attended that year in '88, or '86 - things get fuzzy. Anyway, after that clinic I bought those same drums in that color for around $2.5k. I still record with those drums to this day.
Oh. My. Gawd!!! Where has this been all my life! Thank you SO MUCH for this upload! The best version yet (to me) of my all-time favorite AH song, everyone is completely on fire here! What a lineup, they're all pushing their limits and I guess we should thank Vinnie for lighting the fire so hot underneath everyone. Just, wow!
Vinnie is an awesone drummer. But here as if he's trying to outdo (overplayed) someone who did just a perfect groove for this song on the album. Well, he's Vinnie why would he copy?
vinnie is with out a doubt incredible ,but jimmy johnson is THE glue and is playing his ass off here..GO JIMMY!!!!!!!!!! p.s. i'm not a bass player but i play one on TV..

Sounds like the synthax on the solo. but it's still Allan - one of this most famous song solos. What sounds like keyboards is a guitar through and through.
Killer Hunt solo @2:00 - 6:00 then the master takes over on guitar. They were always better as a 4 piece in my opinion. They could reproduce the albums better that way. I always wondered why Allan didn't experiment with chord bed loops he could trigger when he soloed when performing as a 3 piece although it sounds like he does coming out of his solo. This is by far the best I've heard Vinnie play with Allan. I never cared for his overdone cymbals and odd groupings of 5s on the albums (nor did he I heard) but Allan said keep it.
Interesting that Vinnie thought he did too much, I've never heard that story. The opening fill on Spokes is still one of the wildest introductions I've ever heard though.
Holy shit at 3:23 he lost me completely. What a fucking genius. My only regret is there wasn't more Allan and Vinnie music recorded. Last years when he was playing with Donati I was suffering inside wondering why it couldn't be Vinnie instead.
Listen to all of James Taylor’s catalogue and then get back on the criticism of Sklar. Compared to his peers in the late ‘60s and throughout the ‘70s, he was a monster. Time, feel, beautiful lines. You probably think Pino Palladino sucks too. Jimmy is a beast but there is absolutely no room for this level of improvisation on the hundreds of albums Sklar has cut. And then, if you only listened to Jimmy’s playing with James Taylor, again you’d realise that he actually plays *more simply* than Sklar, and if you had only heard JJ on JT’s records, you’d probably think JJ was a boring player who people ‘rave’ about.
hey man, where'd you get a pic from the '87 Atlanta Pro Percussion clinic?? I have a grainy vid of it. Some of the best stuff I've ever heard from him.
Thank you very much! I am a super big Vinnie fan and love hearing his playing from the 80's and 90's. I hope to connect with you through email soon. Your "Vinnie" brother, Jason E
Steve Hunt's solo is absolutely incredible on here too...never gets said...
Its a drummersworld out here Andy! but you're right. He makes a very musical contribution to the work of AH.
I was at this show- I was stunned into disbelief for weeks after this- Vinnie was beyond brilliant.
lucky you, the only 5 gigs they did together live

"White Lines" but they play "Devil take the Hindmost"

@@leofender909 That makes one of us!
Incredible playing all around! Vinnie's phrasing and timing and flow, the little nuances he puts in, his feel and musicality--just fantastic.
Chad and Vinnie two who have long written the future of world drumming....
Jimmy J has to be my fave bassist- a composer at heart- complex and punchy.
Wo..... Jimmy is playing LOCO!!!!!!! NICE!!!! And the Holdsworth, Colaiuta duo solo.....DAMN!!!! Not of this world.
Jimmy Johnson is thumpin' the hell outta dis!!
hahahahhahahaa...Vinnie brings out the animal in Jimmy. Jeez. Always loved the way they play together. It's such a different beast with VC on site.
Vinnie is a chops monster - but knows how to lay down that extra phat monster groove, too. Incredible.
Allan is just toying with the guitar...
#UNBELIEVABLE!
They all sound sensational!

This was the very first tune I heard from Allan back in the early eighties, fan ever since

Vinnie playing Devil Take the Hindmost !!! No way...I'm so used to Chad and Gary playing this....wow !!
There's also Virgil. 🤘
