Fender Silver Face Twin Reverb - Part 1

- Correction: The Mudhoney show is next Thurs!
This silver face Twin Reverb came in with many many issues as most of the CBS era Fenders do. They don't get the attention and maintenance that the earlier models seem to. However, they also have some issues by design which need to be addressed for reliability. These amps are all starting to fail or play up and unless rebuilt correctly, will be useless for the serious musician.

Seeing the sort of stuff amps come in with makes me feel so good about my own soldering ability.
Always wanted to see inside one of these Master Volume Twins up close and clear. Looking forward to seeing this series.
Oh, the horrors that await you!
The issues you notice straight away is mind boggling, it would take the average techy days or weeks to reverse the bodges, keep up the good work cobber! Shazzy!
Anything you let go will ALWAYS come back to bite you and take 3-5 times longer in the long run. Ask me how I know.
Here I was thinking Brad finally gets an old Fender like Lyle gets, and boy howdy is that one a can of worms. Looking forward to the updates on this one, I bet it leaves as a seriously transformed, badass amp
Hey mate, thanks for the timely reminder that there's a right way to do this stuff. I've got a one-owner 76 Silverface I'm taking on as a learning project, so I'm watching your efforts with keen interest! Cheers.
Brads gonna get into a Fender bender! Good luck!
Tilt back legs were factory original on these.
Just in time. About to start a Twin of my own :)
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Lol!
About to start a 77 myself! Thankfully its a bunch more stock than this one and a bit cleaner. Good luck with all that wax!
Aloha I had a sliver face Twin. Used it for clean rhythm
Mudhoney! Huzzah!
This amp is saying touch me I’m sick
Caps have by the manufacturers data have a good useful life of 7 years for top performance . After 12 years they really need to be replaced IMHO. Have seen 20 year old caps that are still close to in range of spec . The advancement by the Japanese in cap production really are worth replacing . The don't fix what is still working kind of bunch accept performance well below what a fine amp can be. Good enough is not great .
God, I hate set screws on knobs....
This cat will get this amp tops!!!
Crickey...You're up to your Ass in Alligators again Mate ! 🤯
I can imagine Uncle Doug filling up his Bowl, as you speak, for this Episode . 🙄🍿🍿
Looks like you're going to need some Acetone, to clean up those Valves ? 😉

Do you think a Terminal Board is a more reliable Mod for grounding the Shazzy, even it's not Circa correct, for an older Amp like this ? 3:43
I can't envision this particular Amp ending up in the Smithsonian. 🤔

Looking forward to your final Product Brad !
Cheers ✌️ 🤙

Saying "shassy" is no worse than saying "sodder" Brad.😎
The Oxford English Dictionary says that both "sodder" and "soul-durr" are *correct*.
@good'un I put the "durr" in "soul-durr"
@@BradsGuitarGarage , perhaps in another life you were a Whirling "Durr-vish"?
whole thing needs coming out and new board if asking me
New vid up, mate.
It's scary to think a professional band will be relying on that amp. You probably felt like rebuilding the whole amp 😅
Indeed I did.
And as you saw in the following videos, that's what happened.
@@BradsGuitarGarage yeah for sure. It was a great series of videos. Keep em coming !
The high value resistors attached to anode connected side of opto pulling down to cathode is to try and stop the classic Fender Tremolo 'Ticking'. This amp is starting to look pretty butchered up, as are many of that age. Those eyelet boards invariably end up conductive junk.... any sheets of plastic hiding between the two boards.... who does that??? :) The 2 x 47u paralleled bias supply caps too large = slow ramp bias supply. These amps are a much worshiped pile of $hit - but they sound great! Who doesn't like the big clean sound of a Twin getcha double stops on. ua-cam.com/video/96BlTxY_e7M/v-deo.html
You won't recognise it by the end of the next video, mate. But my God, the hours that went into it!
This will be pretty much a clone when done with good iron…hopefully
Yeah, kinda. But it's a mission critical amp. And that mission it will fulfill, or I'll be held responsible.
What a mess. You've got your work cut out for you
