    THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION MOVIE REVIEW | 30:06 - 32:58
    The Shawshank Redemption Movie Description:
Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover and is sentenced to a tough prison. However, only Andy knows he didn't commit the crimes. While there, he forms a friendship with Red (Morgan Freeman), experiences brutality of prison life, adapts, helps the warden, etc., all in 19 years.
Darabont purchased the film rights to King's story in 1987, but development did not begin until five years later, when he wrote the script over an eight-week period. Two weeks after submitting his script to Castle Rock Entertainment, Darabont secured a $25 million budget to produce The Shawshank Redemption, which started pre-production in January 1993. While the film is set in Maine, principal photography took place from June to August 1993 almost entirely in Mansfield, Ohio, with the Ohio State Reformatory serving as the eponymous penitentiary. The project attracted many stars of the time for the role of Andy, including Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Kevin Costner. Thomas Newman provided the film's score.
While The Shawshank Redemption received critical acclaim on its release, particularly for its story and the performances of Robbins and Freeman, it was a box-office disappointment, earning only $16 million during its initial theatrical run. Many reasons were cited for its failure at the time, including competition from films such as Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump, the general unpopularity of prison films, its lack of female characters, and even the title, which was considered to be confusing for audiences. It went on to receive multiple award nominations, including seven Academy Award nominations, and a theatrical re-release that, combined with international takings, increased the film's box-office gross to $58.3 million.
Over 320,000 VHS copies were shipped throughout the United States, and on the strength of its award nominations and word of mouth, it became one of the top rented films of 1995. The broadcast rights were acquired following the purchase of Castle Rock by Turner Broadcasting System, and it was shown regularly on the TNT network starting in 1997, further increasing its popularity. Decades after its release, the film was still broadcast regularly, and is popular in several countries, with audience members and celebrities citing it as a source of inspiration, and naming the film as a favorite in various surveys. In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Maybe the book makes it clearer but, in the film, one interesting question is just how morally bankrupt was the warden he before Andy met him? To what extent did Andy's presence just enable him to pursue tendencies he always had, and to what extent did the man's efforts to keep himself sane and human in prison, which blurred the boundaries between guards and inmates, actually have a tempting, corrupting influence on Norton?
We do know prison definitely corrupted Andy to some extent; there's a scene where he flat-out admits it - and, really, one can easily be tempted to sympathise with him. Not that I necessarily agree with this statement, but it's very easy to imagine oneself, in Andy's position, seriously asking the question: if following all society's rules got him treated as a criminal anyway, why bother to keep following them?
It reminds me of Les Miserables - the two key protagonists in that, Javert and ValJean, were warder and prisoner, respectively, but at the end of the day they were *both* victims of what the prison system does to those who have contact with it - on either side of the bars. The infamous Stanford Prison Experiment was a brutal confirmation of this.

I’d like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can’t expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. It was as if some beautiful bird had flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free."

I love all the symbolism in this film, two good examples are: The grass is always green on the other side whenever you see outside the wall's which isn't subtle but often missed.
One of the more subtle ones is the lighting when Andy is talking to Red just before he escapes, it shows Andy in the light and Red still in the shadow which symbolises Andy's impending freedom and Red having to remain incarcerated.

The film has two great scenes of misdirection
the first is the night before Andy escapes, Red thinks Andy might commit suicide and the film sets that up like we’re going to find that Andy lost the will for the fight
    only to find he’s escaped
and the second moment is with Red contemplating going back to the prison, by thinking he will buy one of the guns from the pawnshop, then he goes into the store and we’re meant to think he’ll do what brooks wanted to do
Then he buys a compass instead, and uses it to find Andy’s note and his way back to him.

Story-wise it’s perfect, and the way it builds and you have this huge climax of Andy tricking Norton and escaping, Norton killing himself etc…great ending….but then you have this incredible 15 minute soliloquy by Red as he finds hope again and finds his own redemption and salvation, and it’s those 15 minutes that are just absolutely amazing for me, and no matter how many times I have seen it always gets me.
