I beg to differ. His voice is full of expression and color, not to mention joy and deep feeling. And the level of spontaneity as well as the rapport between the two are nothing less than AWESOME!!!

Fischer-Dieskau is the best. But let us not overlook that wonderful accompanist. Now, what's his name? Ah, yes, the great Sviatslov Richter. I trust they are performing in paradise.

Glorious. A wonderfully cheerful song, and Fischer-Dieskau sings it magnificently, both technically and in the interpretation. Profoundly beautiful.

Thank you so much for sharing these gems - absolutely fabulous. They could have churned these out as a cough and a spit but I love the attention to detail and the joy they bring to this. A relatively simple song is taken to the heights by two masters, utterly in tune, with themselves, each other & the music. Doing something small but exquisitely. Simply wonderful

This is a clinic in color, nuance, resonance. He relished this song, and it sounds like he still had all his prime stuff at age 53. I think the recording really shows how varied his "touch" and color, DFD I mean!

Dieskau is the only singer I know who is capable of and intelligent enough to sing staccato when the music requires it. All other singers seem to think that staccato only applies to instruments.

I agree that the performance of both artistes is suberb. However, listen to and watch a fairly recent recording (available here on UA-cam) of Roderick Williams and Riger Vignoles' presentation. It's a very different reading but somehow I feel this latter pair bring the song more vividly alive.

It may be the performer who first introduces us to a repertiore for some reason becomes our reference. If so I’m sure happy my introduction to lieder came from Fischer-Dieskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Same effect for me from having first experienced Mahler’s ‘ Das Lied von der Erde’ with Kathleen Ferrier & Julius Patzak. How could anyone recover from that?

Le pêcheur n'est pas harcelé par les soucis
    Et les chagrins et les douleurs ;
    Il détache tôt le matin
    Avec l'esprit léger son bateau.

I seem to be an outlier in current times, but I really prefer Fischer-Dieskau. Current singers are fine, do a nice job with the Schubert Lieder. I know many my age prefer Bryn Terfel. I like him. But for my tastes, no one, at least no male singer, has ever quite done these as much justice as Fischer-Dieskau. Ian Bostridge, too, does a fine job with these. But, what can I say? I guess I'm a bit of a throwback.

There are some fine singers around today but none that comes close to the interpretive, technical, intellectual, inspirational talent this man possessed. In addition, he had an incredibly gorgeous voice which he seemingly could do whatever he wished with and lastly he had such a charismatic presence when he walked out on stage( I can't explain it , I just felt it) I think many of you who have had the good fortune to hear him in person will agree. I'm not sure anyone will come along in the future with such gifts.

    • @RolandKarlBryce
      @RolandKarlBryce 7 років тому +1

Totally agree! Bryn is great but the German language ennunciation and tone subtley is less than the total genius and control of the gem of a man.

    • @schubertkind
      @schubertkind 6 років тому +2

I couldn't agree more!!! I was lucky enough to hear him at Carnegie Hall in the 70s. I remember his amazing stage presence - he had the audience eating out of his hand before he had even sung a note. At the end of that transcendental Winterreise performance, he sang 7 encores! And it was that moment that I knew I had been hit by lightning, and I became a serious musician from that one concert. I always wished I could have met him.

Does anyone know what the lyrics mean? I understand the words, of course, but I don't understand whatt the sheperdwoman does, exactly. Is shy trying to seduce the fisherman and fails? Or is he trying to seduce her? Does he succeed or fail? Or am I just projecting too much into this and she's just literally trying to catch real fish (and... fails..)

    The fisherman is not plagued
    by cares, grief or sorrow.
In the early morning he casts off
his boat with a light heart.
    Round about, peace still lies
    over forest, meadow and stream,
    with his song the fisherman
    bids the golden sun awake.
    He sings at his work
    from a full, vigorous heart.
    His work gives him strength,
    his strength exhilarates him.
    Soon a bright multitude
    will resound in the depths,
    and splash
    through the watery heavens.
But whoever wishes to set a net
    needs good, dear eyes,
must be as cheerful as the waves,
and as free as the tide.
There, on the bridge, the shepherdess
    is fishing. Cunning wench,
    leave off your tricks!
    You won’t deceive this fish!

I don't see it as literally as doon920. Throughout the song the fisherman appears to revel in his freedom and lack of worries. I think that the reference to the shepherdess is allegorical. The last two lines "Give up your tricks - you won't deceive this fish!", are clearly aimed at her, either out loud or in thought. Whether he thinks she is genuinely "angling" for him, or it's just a bit of banter, I'm sure the fisherman is referring to himself as the "fish".

We all sin and fall short of the glory of God. Let it be known that every man is deservant of hell.
But 2000 years ago God came in flesh as Jesus from Nazareth and lived a sinless life yet having all the temptations humans do. He was killed by his own people, the ones who claimed to believe in God but this had to be done because his death would become a sacrifice for all our sins.
Now, whoever believes in Jesus will be saved. You must repent of your sins and be baptized and whoever comes through Jesus who is the messiah (or the Christ) of who's sacrifice was predicted milleniums ago, he who comes through him will come to God. But there is no other way to come to God but through him, because it is God who sacrificed himself for us as Jesus.
