  • G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video I’ll be dealing with a different type of matrix opal, concrete matrix. This matrix doesn’t take a polish well, and will need further resin coating to finish them, but I will be treating them a second time in Ribena/sulphuric acid. I will include the final results in a future video. I hope you enjoy, thanks for your time 😜👍 theopalmills.com.au theopalmills@gmail.com

    Those greens came out amazing. Probably my favorite color in opal is that shade of green.

    Funny, when you were breaking the bottom off the chunk with the hammer, I said, "now I see why they call it concrete" right when you said it. Had a little laugh. Cannabis does that to me from time to time. Lol

    Can remember 30 years ago we use to use the coloured concrete in fish tanks. Looked great. Untreated ofcourse

    I have used a slate sealer on the concrete did an ok job. You could try Krylon triple thick crystal clear glaze too. The concrete soaked up the slate sealer pretty good

    Bloody nice Phill, do you give the finished stones a bit more of a rub n polish after treatment? Or is that it then the polish gets painted on. Mate, your fingers are fine, they are fingers of a working man.

      Ty, as these need the resin , I’ll be leaving the surface at 280# to help with bonding. I’m going to play around and see if I can get the resin to absorb enough, to try and then take it back to the surface and see if it’ll polish (not holding high hopes though) 🤪👍

    Hi Phil. Who would have thought there would be that much color hiding in the 'concrete' type matrix. Nice work to bring it out.

    Amazing work!
    I’m treating some of my Anda Matrix at the moment and have 3 questions -
    1. Is that 98% sulphuric?
    2. What temperature did you heat the acid to?
    3. Could I achieve the same in a slow cooker (crock pot)?
    Cheers mate! Love your work!

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  Рік тому +2

      G’day Fizz, 1. yes 98% sulphuric acid, 2 & 3. I cook mine in a slow cooker, make sure it’s well ventilated, don’t leave on high for too long, keep a bucket of water with bi-carb mixed handy to neutralise any spills. Be safe, have fun, cheers 🤪👍

      I have a couple of options, Liquid glass and Protite casting resin, I’ll let you know if I’d advise them or not though.

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  Рік тому

      If your question is, what type of matrix could it be?, then it might be natural black matrix opal, Andamooka can produce quite a wide variety of opal matrix. 🤪👍

    Is andamooka cheap?

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  2 роки тому

      Andamooka matrix is lower priced than “pure” opal could be one way to look at it, Andamooka crystal opal can get quite expensive, but there’s also lower grade material like most fields. 🤪👍

      I have a website theopalmills.com.au though for parcels I pretty much sell straight away as I come across them, if you’d like you can email me at theopalmills@gmail.com to let me know your preference and budget, and if I find something suitable I can let you know. I will be looking at some boulder opal next week.
