      The only problem with these gears is the potential for wear due to the abruptness of some of the changes. At slower speeds the impacts aren't too bad, as long as they aren't carrying a big load, but higher speeds and higher loads could cause them to wear faster

  • @warren52nz
    @warren52nz 9 років тому +1360

    Did anyone else notice that the gear ratio changes as those non-circular gears turn? That means if you turn one at a constant speed the other one will speed up and slow down as it goes around.
    That might be useful for something.

      Exactly my thoughts. Example #2 demonstration. Could it somehow be used in an internally geared rear hub for a bicycle drive to magnify the "osymetric" effect/affect? Or, perhaps, even in the crank as the original osymetric is? I would think so. Have not the energy or patients to design develop patent this, but could be worth millions.

    As a mechanical engineering student, I need to note:
    as long as the teeth match and the distance from rotating point to the tooth of one gear and the other add up to the distance between the pivots it works. The bits without teeth need to meet about the same criteria (matching shape and distance) and at a constant rpm those are used for timing.

    All you folks are missing the point. While it is true that some of these gear trains are just novelties, take a look at the motion of many of the output gears, relative to the motion of the input gears. See that? They represent a mathematical function, depending on the form of the gears. As an example the Norden Bombsight, which was one of the great secrets of WW II, had many such eccentric gears within it, which performed all sorts of math operations

    I like these gears. Up until 4:00 it seems that most of them are either "perfect" geometric figures or figures where one was cut as the complement of the other -- if you decide on a given distance between the two gear axes then, given one gear, the other needs to be made into the complementary radial function of the first. Adding more gears seems like an interesting problem too, as well as letting certain portions slip, like with the fish gear. The inner gears at 4:00 are all the same diameter for this reason -- I imagine they can be placed anywhere in the interior space and it would still work out. Cool!
