- Short Wave Radio Signals often have a long ride before they reach their final destination. Mother Nature does its own thing, but you can have a measure of control as well. Peter G3OJV, goes over the basics of short wave signal propagation.

You "suppose you're doing something right?" You bet you are, yes, one of my all-time favorites to watch!👍😃🇺🇸
Many thanks.
I have that antenna book & what a great point u made, that when considering the year of publication,1980, the only frame of reference then was "real world," no internet, no antenna modeling, etc...😃🇺🇸
Great to hear from you.
Hi Peter, fabulous video. One to watch a few times - an absolute treasure trove of information! Hoping to visit your store in MK very soon as I'm after some bits and pieces. 73 M7PGX.
Many thanks. Mention the Video Channel when you call in at MK.
I like to say it's like playing "billiards in the sky". Great topic Peter! New hams seem to fixate on SWR but IMO need to pay more attention to WHERE their signal is actually going. 73 OM and Happy Veterans Day to you.
I’m back in the hobby after several years. I put up a doublet at 45’ yesterday. I made 2 contacts, both DXpeditions, one in Cameroon and the other in Botswana (250W on 17m). I was thrilled that I could reach out that far with a wire!
Love your channel, I’m a newcomer.
Btw I’m in the States, right on the Gulf Coast
Hi there, great to hear from you and well done on the DX. Thanks for supporting the Channel. 73 Peter
Nice summary of propagation theory and practice Peter! It’s great to just “throw a wire up” but knowing why it behaves that way is satisfying. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Peter - just had to leave a comment - I really enjoyed your video - excellent - Dave
Hi Dave, nice to hear from you. Hope all OK with you. 73 Peter
Gordon Bennet…. That’s some inflation on the price of that book. I’m just building my station after a long absence since mid 1990s… became licensed and then life gave a load of impedance… but now I’m knackered and don’t work I’ve pulled my icon 706 and the matching ATU for it out of the closet and I’m building a dedicated man hut in the back garden…slowly… I’ve found your channel very informative and the vids on doublets and baluns /ununs interesting … I’ve only have a very tiny garden but antennas and experiments really appeal to me… and yes, you are doing plenty right Peter.
Best wishes to everyone… 73.
Many thanks and welcome back. 73 Peter.
What's beautiful about the Physics of radio and electronics are that that equations never really change, from a circa 1980's book to today. Or before! Set ham radio away for work, raising a family, and school and career and so on, and it's still there, just waiting for you to get back around to it. Ham radio, like Rock and Roll, never forgets. All the Best, Peter! 73 DE W8LV BILL
Lots of great content in your videos Peter. Just stumbled across this youtube channel but I have been impressed with the content and have subscribed to the channel.
Hello Peter. Thanks for another great video. I found a used copy of the 1980 antenna book for $10. I am going to order a copy for my library. Cheers and 73 de N9XY
Excellent. Thanks for sharing. 73 Peter
Interesting video. You mentioned a station in Thailand.
200watts. I also live in Thailand and we can only use 60watts on the hf bands legally.
Anyawat nice video. I'm a retired antenna design engineer.
I spent many a happy boy at my test range in the cooling marshes.
73, Paul
Hi Paul, thanks for that info.
Hello Peter. I thoroughly enjoyed your video. You are so correct about pre-internet books. Thank you for taking the time to make it. I especially like it when you are traveling. My wife Carmen and I have visited your lovely country twice and can't wait for a third one. If you and your spouse are ever in California, Santa Barbara County, please let us know. We would be happy to take you both to dinner. 73's John
Hi John, what a lovely invitation. Much appreciated. Thanks for supporting this channel. Keep in touch. 73 Peter.
Thanks Peter... very informative as always...
Very welcome
Very helpful video Peter, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi. Nice video. Can you tell me if raising my antenna (vertical 6 meters extended) mast higher from what it is now (2 meters) will improve my DX communication as well reduce noise ?
Raising up further will improve things if you are surrounded by houses etc. Noise improvement is possible but maybe not. There is only one way to find out. Every situation is different.
Thank you so much sir. Will try to raise my mast higher and see results. Thankfully I have an antenna analyzer but at the same time will wear headphones while connected on my remote system and hope things will be better. Fortunately I am not surrounded by houses. Best 73s, sy1dal
Hello Peter , very nice your Channel. Tnx for the CW qso in 40 meters. 73 de IZ8FAV
Hi there, nice to have the QSO. Thanks for your support.73 Peter.
Peter, i think you mean degrees not % , anyway we get it :)
Don’t forget the 11m band 😂
yes but what about the guys who think the world is flat ???
They would have problems working long path.
Two tin cans joined together with a piece of string should do the trick!😆👍
Thanks for the video Pete - informative & useful as always 😊 Out of interest, where did you get your light up call sign from? de M7CCQ
Light-up sign was made by my granddaughter who runs a craft business but she no longer makes them as she has disposed of the machine in favour of other products!
