Always love this dude's energy... He "brings it" to every thing he does. Looking forward to you and the boy's adventure. My dad always made it happen we were growing up... camping, white water canoe trips, even bike rides to the local dairy bar for a float on a hot summer day are some of my fondest memories! =D
Hey Trip, I used to design fiberglass molds and I can tell you larger radiuses on those inside corners are much stronger. Working with what you have there, you could achieve larger radiuses around the floor by using a foam spacer with a convex radius as a filler material around the base, then roll several layers of glass over it to encase it. This would increase the strength a lot.
Interesting thought, thanks for sharing your knowledge. If things get worse I will see about doing what you described. Right now it's looking decent and I'd like to avoid having to redo the gelcoat and match my splatter finish....
I know this video is old, but trip, please try not to tear up the grass like that in the future. Seagrass is a precious resource, and while water quality issues are the biggest threat, prop and anchor scarring does not help. Love your vids and I know you are a steward of the outdoors so hopefully you'll understand.
Great little boat.. Micro skiff... With the anchor, try again with a short section of chain like you mentioned... And as for the weight distribution... If you want to speed... You want two thirds of the weight in the back third of the boat... Not really forward.... Keep the light stuff up there... Search UA-cam on bass boat set up and weight distribution... The porposing at high speed is the centre of gravity sitting forward of the surface area where the boat is planning on the hull... So more weight back will enable highest speed at plane... But at rest it's another story... Enjoy!!
Rokna Anchors are what Sailors use. Don't know if they make one that small but if you're looking for a set everytime they're considered the best. I've seen this style of boat build from Florida before as well and I really like it. I think it's an off shoot of the Gheenoe Brand as you talk about.
Yep! I had a Rocna on my Montgomery 17 and I would trust that baby any day... There are some plastic anchors in the Rocna style I've been looking at ;)
Hey trip. Gel coat cracks are typical. Maybe not something you want to see in a boat. I have a little experience in industrial fiberglass. I didn’t get to watch how you attached the console. Here’s something you can try. On the inside of the console, do several layups of fiberglass in the radius of the base. There’s a product referred to as woven roven. It’s more of a solid fiber material. Looks like a woven blanket with large string. You’re going to get a lot more strength with it because there’s less plastic (resin) and a lot more glass. You can layer it with the regular 3/4 oz stuff (I could be wrong with the size). The desire is to secure that console very tight to the hull. The inside might be a little ugly though. Then I would reinforce the outside radius with several layers of mat. Redo the gel coat and see if that helps. Obviously boats are made with molds. Any time you can get a consistent integral layer of fiberglass it will be very strong. Adding to an existing mold would require you to get down into existing fiberglass and build it back up in layers that connect the addition. Boat looks great!
I used 1708 fiberglassed mat on the inside to tab the box in. Didn't do the outside in an effort tokeep things "pretty" but maybe I should have now looking back. If things get worse I will tab the outside ;) Glad you like her!
Trim plate on the outboard should be no higher than the bottom of the boat. It will possibly cavitate. That is where the prop is not grabbing all the water it should and you will hear the rpm's go higher with no gain in speed. I did not see any of that but you may have. Great job with the rig Tripster. Stress cracks are nothing but may have been avoided with structural glass on those joints. Sorry, I watched most of the restoration but I may have missed how that area was fastened down. You killed it buddy, just enjoy the boat and don't worry about the small stuff. Life is to short. Thanks for all the vids.
I did get it to cavitate some but my goal was to keep it down to avoid that. I glassed it to the hull on the inside only to try to keep the outside "pretty".... So the cracks could have been avoided and in hind sight I wish I would have glassed the outside. Oh well..... I don't think anything is going to really break though lol
Awesome looking boat. I wish that we were closer to the coast. 6+ hours, depending on where you go…but I guess that is better than many folks. Enjoyed the video. Look forward to seeing more adventures.
Hey Trip. "Hoang.Nguyen82" on IG here.. Glad to see your boat running finally. I was having porpoising issues too no matter what setting I did with my setup. I added a Shaw Wing cav plate and jacked the outboard all the way up. The outboard cav plate was over 1.5" under the keel, now its about 5" on top of the keel. It cured everything. No porpoising, barely any bow rise and hole shot is instant. These little boats don't like to be aft heavy. Also a RPM gauge will determine your max performance. Lastly, I haven't been able to find anyone who will ship Magnets for the seat cushions so that idea is being pushed back.
Hey man! It was good to have her running ;) I wonder if the cav plate will reduce my top end speed? I'd like to have a tach and a temp gauge.... Ahhhh, hate to hear that about the magnets!
@@TripSmith The cav plate keeps water around your prop with the jackplate jacked up max height. Yes they are pricey but it will fix your porpoising issue, you can run super skinny when needed, and you may gain a couple of mph. Since you will be carrying camping gear and what not, with a cav plate, you don't have to worry too much about weight distrubution because the cav plate will keep the boat running smooth. That plate is one of the plates out there on the market. There is a few others. But they are not whale tails like the traditional fins you see at local stores.
I love the boat Trip! When customizing things there will always be trial and error situations! You need a mount on your console for your GPS so you can be hands-free !!! Theres a fine line when trimming between porpoising and top speed! I couldnt tell I'd you have electric trim but if not it's hard to get the proper trim!!!! Good luck man and stay safe!!!
Pretty sweet boat you’ve made there. Congrats. Not sure if you already did this but google search “Epoxy Fillets” in regards to your cracking on the center console you’ve built. Should resolve your issue, fiberglass doesn’t like 90 degree angles.
Thanks Matt! Yea.... I think there is just to much flex on the bottom of the boat. After doing research these boats are known to have that issue of flexing which is not the greatest for gelcoat.
Add a 4 ft. chain say 3/8 in links that way it will help keep the front of the anchor down . Well got to the part where they said it did not need a chain try a chain anyway . Toss that anchor before you loose your boat . Check on a Stainless Prop doesn`t flex like an Aluminum does . Seriously check on a Stainless prop . My friend has the Merc. 20 hp. I told him this he did it and got 6 mph more speed . Enjoyed the video
I've thought about that.... But my power needs are so minimal I think I should be good for multiple days. I'm just not a fan of extra wires.... and parts and pieces that can fail. Probably should do some research on though, might be something out there that I'd be comfortable with.
Maybe even look into a danforth anchor. I use a 33lbs bruse anchor for my 36ft Catalina sailboat. I us 100% chain and no road. I use a 8 ft snubbed line to prevent shock load to my deck hardware.
Great video.... may I ask did you have problems crossing the state line? We were told we would be turned back if we tried. We live in KY but have a property in PCB that we have to get to for business and maintenance. Advice?
Trip Smith Little bit of shade on a long trip makes a world of difference.. but don’t take my word for it... I used to be young and dumb. Now I’m older and wiser.
Trip, your KILLIN ME.....do you know how many fish hang around RIGHT where the sand drops off??? Just buzzin the shoreline like that. Just go out to deeper water man!
2 pound fortress light anchor five foot of chain should do the job! And yes you did not lock the second anchor correctly. It would have grabbed just fine
I pulled on it parallel and right on the bottom which pretty much exactly mimics the pulling direction from a chain and it still broke out ;) Chain is used to reduce shock loads, reduce chafing and keep the angle of pull as low as possible. None of those were a factor ;)
FYI, saw an IPB boat review and they mentioned these boats suffer from a weak floor and flexing - maybe that is why you saw your gel coat cracks? Maybe if you redo it you can beef up the floor? Trip pulls out an anchor, I think, "Oooh, he got a drone!"
Haha! Yea not quite.... I think about it regularly but just never pull the trigger!
Trip Smith the Bebop 2 is a good option, pretty cheap and long flight time. You may wanna check it out, it’s from Parrot
I thought the same thing
I was just about to say that... Better Drone than anchor!

Hey I understand, I tried not to mess things up. Maybe it's doing harm and I don't even know it?
You need to push the slide and lock the arms open on the grappling hook anchor... I love it for a stern anchor for my 17ft bayboat
Typically I would lock the flukes open but since I was setting it manually I figured it wasn't necessary.
The skiff looks awesome. Thank you for the tour. Remain safe and carry on .... Cheers

For such a little skiff, it handles beautifully
Yea, it does that. But it's not a fan of much chop.....

Fun times Trip! I’m loving the skiff. I’m in central Florida and thinking about building the same thing but with an aluminum job boat.
Fun for sure! I was looking HARD at aluminum boats when I bought this one.....

I've got a pretty nice stainless prop ;) Yea I won't be using that anchor I don't think....
That thing is perfect for a Keys trip. Eat up all the flats there.
EXACTLY!!!!!!!!
If you're not anchoring deep stakeout poles work great
That's really what I need... Just haven't made one or bought one yet.
You used the second anchor wrong!
Oh.... How many ways are there to use it? Just because I didn't lock the colar down? The flukes were fully deployed the entire time ;)
I use the same style anchor with my 18ft Sundance Skiff with 6 ft of chain and have no issues with it setting in any bottom.
what part of Florida are you from and where did you video tape the places.....It was very nice places and clear water
I'm from Dothan, Alabama. This was in Panana City Beach, Fl.
Awesome Video Trip!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Good job Trip. Enjoy your videos as always. So is there a Rock a Dock 2020?
Thanks Juan! It's looking like we should be good to go. The virus non sense looks to be slowing down.
You can use the fishing perch as a trip dip jumping board
Exactly!
Hey, put a solar panel on top of that back thing so u can take that thing overnight and such and always have power!

that anchor is for the beach or to use on land on an island to hold the boat from floating away lol..
Lol Yea maybe so....
Great video, keep up the great work.
Hey thanks Webb!!!!
Love the new skiff man and looking forward to some great adventures on it. Would a pole anchor work on a skiff, or is that more of a kayak thing?
Me too! Yea.... I really need to just get a stake out pole.... lol
Just found your vids. Enjoying seeing your videos of the same places i run around (Pea River Rat here) Do yo still have your Gheenoe?
Hey glad you enjoy them! No, sold her before I sunk her ;) lol
Try adding like 10 to 15 feet of chain before your anchor rode. It helps set the anchor ap much better.

Nah, no issues at all on hwy 231 ;) The interstate was the one they were stopping folks on.
Bimini top! Shade will save your tail on a long trip.
Bimini on a flats boat - heresy! :-)

Trip dip!!!..... BOATS GONE.
Exactly!
Love that skiff! What size is your motor?
Me too! It's a 25hp 2-stroke.
Hey Trip! Hope you’re safe out there coming at you from Miami!
I am! Hope yall are well down there as well!
Trip Smith We are! Wife and I have been itching for a boat now after seeing your little skiff! Mind if i ask you some questions on your set up?
On the second anchor you have to lock the collar up against the spars.
Yea.... Generally I would if I didn't set it manually. But I don't think it made a difference in that little "test" The flukes weren't collapsing ;)
Just a note ... a boat and motor of that type ... you really should be using a kill switch lanyard.
Yea.... I usually do to be honest, just wasn't this day. My next video on it double check me and set me straight if I forget again ;)
Using chain on any anchor is the most important part of the entire anchoring system.
Generally, yes.... BUt I was holding the rope at an anchor that would have been the pulling force/direction if chain were in the system.
What brand of skiff is this?
That is an IPB 14. Now Skimmer Skiff uses the molds.
Trip Smith nice! I thought I noticed the hull but the cap didn’t make sense. Cool skiff!
Did you say you mounted the console with fiberglass? No fasteners. This might be why it's cracking.
Correct, no fasteners. I donno.... the boat is built without fasteners and just fiberglass.....
Man, the water really screwed with this audio
I know..... Sometimes I forget to "shake it off" after taking it out of the water.....
Check out Cooper anchors
Best anchor I've used
I want one..... badly!
What kind of skiff is this. My favorite style out of 99 percent of microskiffs.
That's the IPB 14. Now made by Skimmer Skiff. Decent skiff, the hull shape isn't very good in chop though.
where can we get the shirts?

25 hp 2-stroke ;)
2 pound fortress light anchor five foot of chain should do the job! And yes you did not lock the second anchor correctly. It would have grabbed just fine
I don't want to have to stow one of those if I can help it. When the 2nd anchor was deployed it never collapsed, especially when I set it manually....
You shouldn’t anchor in sea grass. Get a proper sand anchor. Though anchoring isn’t as bad as prop scaring but still . Gotta do our best
You're right.....
Add chain!
That wouldn't help the anchor set any better unfortunately. The angle of pull from the rode would have been the same.
you go to put a length of chain on the anchor,, you got to have some chain
I pulled on it parallel and right on the bottom which pretty much exactly mimics the pulling direction from a chain and it still broke out ;) Chain is used to reduce shock loads, reduce chafing and keep the angle of pull as low as possible. None of those were a factor ;)

Definitely not a sand anchor you need a plow type for those conditions that’s a rock anchor
Yea, I'd like to get a Cooper or a Mantus....
That’s why you always take a rod

Yea.... Wish I had one lol
come on man..no kil switch or PFD on....anything can happen.
Very true......
That’s suck not have a live well. It’s screwed up!
Yea, it's a pretty bare bones skiff....
Yo from p.c.
What up!
Buy a Mantus dinghy anchor it’s the best. Better than the cooper they have testing videos on their website Mantusmarine.com
They look great but I really like the plastic the cooper is made of....
Wrong type of anchor
Yep, just testing them ;)
dude, put more weight in the front: cooler, ice, FISH!
Haha! I should....
1st
Wham! That was quick!
I will buy your gheenoe for 3k

that anchor is one of those things Superman uses to go from building to building not Superman but Batman
Oh yea!!!! I guess I was confused lol
