  • California is home to a few cool ghost towns. We visited Pioneertown on a Sunday morning Memorial Day weekend before they "opened". A few signs posted no photos or videography were allowed which was a bummer because we had planned to film some stunning tumbleweed-type action on our ‪@GoPro‬ Overall the town was nice, but we didn't see a need to stay very long. In my opinion, they could attract many more visitors if they allowed it to be photographed and "advertised" for free online.
Pioneertown and Burns Canyon Road are roughly 2 hours from Orange County which makes this a perfect day trip for anyone in Riverside, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego, or LA counties.

We then drove further out of town to the Burns Canyon trailhead.

At the time of this recording in May 2023, the trail was easy to moderate. There were a few areas that needed high clearance AND 4wd, but overall the trail was easy. I rate it a 1 to 3.
Big Bear has become one of our go-to spots in Southern California since we first visited together last year. We love the Village and can't wait to explore more of the trails since most of our time has been on Gold Mountain.

How long was the ride? I'm been looking into doing the same route, and I'm coming from San Diego County. I'm just getting an estimate to see if I needed to stay up in Big Bear for a night. I am planning on doing this trail on a weekend adventure.

It's definitely an all day from San Diego. We got into Big Bear I'm the afternoon, and walked around the tourist area of downtown Big Bear, then got back to Escondido by ~6pm.

Why all the aired down stuff? I never have in my life done that.

Sand and rock crawling. Generally not necessary for basic overlanding type stuff.

I think you meant 4 low to keep trans temps down.

For mild inclines 4Hi is okay. For extreme climbs 4Lo is better for sure. 4Lo was just too slow for that trail.
Thank you for watching tho! And I appreciate your comment. 🙌🙌
