    no one has mentioned that it seems the glowing eye in the middle is the actual creature itself. everything else seems to be shell held together by gravity magic, rocks from the craters, the skull is lifeless, but the eye responds and emotes constantly, and is basically the same in all parts of the life cycle. even the "eggs" just look like the eyes in early gestation.

    • @doctorc.1442
      @doctorc.1442 Рік тому +1

      The skull may come from those dead giants found in the underground cities sitting on their thrones. Maybe the whole creature is some sort of parasitic being that needs to infect its host to reach maturity. If these giants were actually "kings" of their own societies, or some sort of living gods, this may very well be one of the reasons why the Astels doomed these civilizations to extinction rather than just exterminating them one by one.

      What if... the creature is the head, skull+fur and pincers, and the rest is just enviromental adaptation? they are natural from the void, aka space, thats why the larvae's body is rocky , and their body resembles a skull for the humanoid beings they grow close to, and the star/eggs to mimic the fake sky of the eternal cities

    I would wager their growth isn’t stagnant, it just takes a really long time. I believe the second Astel grew in the lands between while the natural born fully formed before coming to the lands between, hence the name.

    Never thought about how the Alabaster and Onyx Lords were guarding the Astel, Stars of Darkness. I won if it was implied that they feared the force of the Naturalborn and prevented it from becoming stronger, probably leading to Radahn’s endeavours to halt the movement of the stars and prevent any further Fallingstar Beasts from arriving.

    I love the art in this one, the colors are incredible on the Astel body!
    It's very cool to see the Astels in various development stages, leaves the terrifying idea of seeing all the beasts as full Astels rampaging. It's good environmental story telling. And I honestly never realized that the nameless city literally got its sky stolen and that's why his lair is a starscape.

    The Astels hanging upside down in the subterranean areas are actually referred to as "Withered Astels" in the original Japanese. (I can't read Japanese myself. I lelarned this from someone who is Japanese-literate.) Evidently, this is the end stage of the star beast life cycle and not the middle step like a cocoon.
    Which implies that Astels were far more common at one time. Perhaps it was a pack of Astels that ravaged the underground kingdoms instead of just the one. For all we know, the Nox worshipped the stars and inadvertently called down the Fallingstar Beasts with something like Eternal Darkness, so the Golden Order banished them all beneath ground for meddling with forces beyond them.

    • @square-table-gaming
      @square-table-gaming  Рік тому +6

      It seems odd that if this were the end stage of their life that they would somehow begin hanging from a ceiling. Typically hanging from ceiling is associated with cocoon stages for bugs

      @@square-table-gaming That was my first thought, too. I imagined how eerie it would be for our Tarnished to take the throne as new Elden Lord, only to get blindsided by a bunch of fully grown Astels once they finish maturing underground.
      And, like I said, I can't read Japanese. I'm taking it on faith that this person was right about the original Japanese. Maybe I've been fooled.

    I've always had a random thought about the fallen stars, one that ties to the fact that the world of Elden Ring is called "the lands between." I think the areas belowground with their false skies are supposed to be a hint that the skies in the world above aren't real either, that there's a world above the lands between that has real skies (i.e. the lands between are between the cities below and...whatever is above). The supposition in this video that the Astels are covered in eggs makes me think that maybe the things we think of as stars are eggs for more of these beasts. What if the reason the nameless city has no sky is that Astel took the eggs to attach them to his body to incubate them?

    As much as I thought Astel felt less special after finding yet a second Astel in the game, I do understand a little more how it is possible after seeing the other 'star' beasts. I do love the design of Astel, using planets to make up its body, and I generally have very little issues with the fight itself. In all my time playing the game, I never went to the dungeon to fight the second Astel, so no comment other than that new grab looks painful. I think my one real annoyance is that the monster teleports and I have to run on foot after it in that massive arena. Anyways, cool vid, cool thumbnail. 👍

    The fallingstar beasts share some interesting (and from a lore perspective, mostly unexamined) similarities with a creature from Sumerian mythology called the Bull Of Heaven. Given the many references to this culture in the ancient dynasty, this might be an angle worth investigating. The Bull Of Heaven was a mythical bull, with astral or cosmic significance, from which the zodiac sign Taurus is thought to have originated. Within Sumerian myth, the bull is mostly portrayed as a kind of wonder weapon, under the command of An, the supreme leader of the pantheon. An share a number of similarities with the Greater Will. Both could be described as a deus otiosus and both are primarily concerned with kingship. Within Sumerian and Babylonian culture, it would be completely accurate to say the grace of kingship flowed from An. Additionally, An was a god of the heavens, the cosmos, who could command stars and use them as weapons. However, as a deus otiosus, he wasn't involved in the struggles for supremacy among the other gods, but he did allow the bull of heaven to be used by some of them as a weapon. There is a deleted dialogue line from Godfrey in which he boasts 'gold commandeth the very stars.' This could possibly be referring to Marika and her faction controlling the fallingstar beasts. Finally, the bull of heaven was capable of causing earthquakes in combat. The fallingstar beasts possess attacks of a similar nature. I still think the ant lion interpretive scheme is both strong and valid but Fromsoft could be using it to somewhat mask the mythological origins of these beasts and enhance their exotic and alien nature.

      Then maybe we can say Radahn is Gilgamesh for holding the stars, gilgamesh fight the bull of heaven if I'm not wrong... so Radahn is supposed to be the next lord if not because of Malenia desperation, maybe land between wouldn't be as fkd up as it is now if Radahn become the next lord

      Sumerian mythos has nothing to do with cosmic horror. You're pulling at nonsensical strings.

    I recently had the thought that the Elden Beast is in the same family as all these starspawn. It was sent through a golden star, and it's snakelike body, arms, and wings kind of resemble Astel's body plan. Obviously, they are VERY different beings in the end, but I can't help but think they had similar origins, with the Elden Beast simply being molded by the Greater Will for its purposes.

    Another curious detail about the Yelough Anix Tunnel relates to the item drops of the miners there. These are the only ones that drop Gravel Stones, despite there being no dragons nearby. Could there be some deeper implication to the miners having these? I don't know.
    Anyway, this is another cool video. If you're open to suggestions, could you go through a deep dive into the trolls? I still don't know why some of them use the Frenzy, and why those are the only ones to wear actual clothing.

    I believe the Elden Beast is the beacon drawing them in. As the Elden Ring is labeled as a golden star in lore, I posit that they could be drawn in by it's presence given that amber starlight and golden stars are obscenely rare in lore.
    Perhaps the Radahns move to protect Sellia from Astel by holding the stars was weakened by the rot leading to the modern falling star beasts. Astel are beings that come from the comsic void, perhaps a natural enemy to the stars that inhabit the cosmos? The stars are alive after all, and they dictate the fate of all. glintstones are the living residuals left over from that existence

      FromSoft never wastes a good idea, especially one thats mostly "finished;" they often reuse it in dlc, or their next title. Theres cut content of an event where Astel impacts Radahns arena, iirc.
      Could you imagine?? A battle similar to Radahns, but we have an Astel(s?) careening at us, creating a giant impact crater, like the one that occurs after Radahns been killed? Having to navigate the gravity-frozen debris while a rowdy cosmic antlion hurls Stars of Darkness at us?? 😂

While I'm not actually sold on that hypothesis and it is just Wild Mass Guessing (in the spirit of broadening our way of thinking about things we've all kinda just taken for granted since really early in the game's lore exploration), I do still think it's worth mentioning.

      @@square-table-gaming I'd say the fallingstar beasts and the malformed star enemies convey that implication well enough on their own. This reuse criticism has always been more targeted at the gameplay than the lore. Naturalborn of the Void was the last big gameplay challenge of the game's most significant questline, and to see it copy pasted with only a little changed was disappointing, especially in a part of the game that was plagued with enemy reuse. What if these populations are actively seeking to "predict a future from the stars" or announce this mysterious "message" by actually trying to divine bubbles, because that is the very essence of the "star magic" that even goes as far as to constitute the body of the creatures originating from the Void?
