The beginning of the song is Morse Code for YYZ which is the indicator code for the Toronto International Airport. Alex Lifeson the guitarist is also a pilot and was flying them back to Toronto when Geddy and Neil heard it and it stuck with them.
The guys always liked seeing YYZ on their luggage as it meant they were heading home to their families.
    Cheers

Flying corporate for them in and out off YYZ for years. In a corporate jet, pax can hear cockpit audio. ATIS frequencies must be listened too and Morse code confirmed by crew on every approach, so they heard it a lot.

It started as a bass/percussion warm-up, then Alex wanted in on it, and it grew from there.

You noted this was live in Rio. This concert was unique because of the audience singing/chanting on this INSTRUMENTAL song. The words the audience sang were not written or known by the band. The fans wrote them and shared them and surprised the band by singing them.
The guys in the band were awed and honored that their fans would create this and take part.

“Everyone had their own voice in the same story”, that’s a beautiful way of describing what Rush does. One of the reasons that Rush has rabid fans is that you can listen repeatedly and always find something new in the music.

Alex happens to be a private pilot, one day while approaching Toronto Airport (YYZ) they ear the call sign from the airport in Morse code (the battery introduction) so they composed a song about the experience on landing and getting thru the airport. That’s explain the song sections going from fast to fastest.

2112 with the cartoon video.... 20 + minutes of musical mastery, and the video helps one learn the whole story of the song.... A must see!

  • @fretless05

Rush tends to use this technique a lot where Alex and Geddy play the same melody, but using different flourishes. They each go off a bit, but they keep the same theme within the space of the melody so that even though they're going off, they never stop complementing each other. I love the crowd reaction in this version of the song, but the 1982 version captured on the Exit... Stage Left is amazing in that Neal Peart has a 3 minute drum solo in the middle of the song that boggles the mind.

One of my favorite memories of this song is I was in a car with a couple of coworkers, one of which I hadn't known for too long and who I would eventually go on to date for a while, and this song came on. Me and my other friend are big rush fans and so we immediately start singing along and he instinctively sang the guitar and I the bass proceeding to really confuse our other coworker.

A lot of people have liked RUSH all along, just not many would admit to liking "nerd music." They got very little radio play, were Grammy outcasts, and only made the RRHOF after much protest, and weren't on soundtracks or commercials. Then, a few years ago, they were referenced in a movie and their general popularity soared. A well-made documentary (Beyond the Lighted Stage) introduced them to even more fans. They were your favorite band's favorite band. I was touched by the outpouring at Peart's untimely death. RUSH is the soundtrack to American suburban life.

Well, I was around 12 when I first heard Rush (which just so happens to also be the year YYZ was written). Within the next couple of years, Rush became my favourite band and has stayed there ever since. For my part, it was luck, as I'm still awaiting maturity!
Someone has probably already mentioned this but YYZ (pronounced Why-Why-Zed) is the IATA code for Toronto Pearson International Airport. The story goes that Alex (an amateur pilot) was flying his bandmates back home from a recording session (supervised by his instructor) in that cabin/recording-studio featured in the Tom Sawyer video (which is located near Montreal). When he heard the familiar Morse Code sounds for YYZ, he decided to use them as a basis of a song.
Thus, you can hear YYZ as morse code throughout the song, which was otherwise crafted to convey the feeling of daily life at a large airport.

It's actually not an effect. It's Pinch Harmonics, which are produced by letting your fingers strike the plucked string right before the pick does. So it creates a weird pinching effect that the pickup amplifies. I've heard some kind of similar sounding stuff in Spanish guitar but the pickups really change the whole dynamics of how it sounds.

I am not sure if you noticed but the crowd was singing along with the instrumental. Nice reaction one of my favorite things about Rush is how each member always gets their own moment to shine. It amazes me how the different instruments compliment each other. i will list a couple of suggestions below.

Jone, you should listen to the studio version, on your own. The production is top-notch, of course, but you can hear the guitar solo in a bit more of a pristine state. It's a gorgeous solo. Rush was trying to create some "exotic" parts for the song, since YYZ has to do with the Toronto airport and at an airport you have an opportunity to go to far flung place around the world, right? So, Alex was trying to paint an exotic picture with his solo. Obviously, he's borrowing techniques made famous by Jazz/Fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth and he pulls it off, so to speak, nicely!

That sound you were hearing and asked about, not positive but I think Alex was dragging the edge of his pick down the strings. If it’s not that, then he was doing something with the frets to get a bit of a choked out sound.
