Hi Madalyn! I just discovered your channel 3 hours ago, and I already binge watched your 15 first vlogs 😭😭😭 You’re a gorgeous and inspiring woman! I’m really happy I found such an interesting med vlogger! I’m not into med, I’m a fifth year food engineer, but f*ck I’m sure I’m gonna regret not trying out med school... here in France the system is pretty different (undergrad, med school, res) and I feel like it’s a lot less exciting than the one in the US! So I really love following your journey through residency! Thank you for doing what you do! 💃🏻
Hi Madalyn! Thank you for the information!!! I appreciate the help and guidance so much. I'm not even close to med school or residency, but it is what I'm working towards! So glad I found your channel a couple weeks back. Especially since you're specializing in Dermatology, which is what I want to do as well! have a wonderful day, looking forward to your other videos
I think it suits you. Well because i kinda have the same happy and positive attitude as you do and wanna be a doctor as well so i look at you as my inspiration 🥺💗
Loved this! Any chance you can talk about what you believe were the strong points of your application that allowed you to match in a competitive specialty like dermatology? Thanks!
Your specialty defs fits your personality! Thank you clarifying the process of residency and matching as well as sharing your own experience. Very insightful and helpful🥰🙌
Thank you for dedicating a video to clearing up this confusing topic up! I love your energy, encouragement, and the time you dedicate to paying it forward. You're a true inspiration to us =) and congrats on your match!
I was so confused when you talked about intern and residency at others videos cause in my country it is complete different things, a intern is a Med student at the last 2 years (we have 6 years of college at total) and a resident is a doctor who finished the med school and did take a exam to one medical specialty. But after this video I figure out residency is so complex and complicated at US hahaha
Your charisma would be perfect in any speciality you want, Madalyn! But I will be honest, I wish I had you as my doctor as a 9 year old patient. You would make the lives of many children and their families so happy.
@@DrMadalyn Good extracurriculars, your personal experience with research, good classes to take for non pre-meds, and planning your classes. I hope that made sense, I realize some of these topics might be a little blurry for you as you’ve already graduated med school.
thanks i really enjoyed watching the video, and i always thought that you will choose what specialty ypu get into, what where you hoping to match into or was it always dermatology
You do choose what specialty you apply for, but you only get to enter into that specialty if you match. into it :) I've pretty much always wanted to match derm!
Super helpful! Can you talk about your path to derm, like what you did for your application and how does the AOA residencies work for specialties like derm? Thanks!!
@@DrMadalyn I mean...not really. IMGs (international medical graduates) have a few more hoops to jump through. Applying and matching is much harder. They generally will not match into big academic centers (with few exceptions), and have a much harder time matching in competitive specialties...like derm. Great channel! But the process is significantly different for IMGs. Ive got too many IMG friends and relatives not to comment.
@@ympro2b I’m an img and the PROCESS is the exact same. We take the same USMLE board exams. The only difference now may be with CS being canceled due to Covid, many imgs have to take an alternate route. Otherwise we still complete an eras application and interviews and use The Nrmp match system. Of course it’s harder for an IMG but if you work hard and have decent board scores you should be ok as an IMG.
@@Sexdewana obviously the exams are the same. But how you prepare for the exams, where you take the exams (more IMGs take it in Houston), shadowing, clinical exposure, research, letters of recommendation, visas all very different. Thank you so much for this video! Could you explain what is the difference between university programs, affiliated, and community programs? Does it mean that the program is not as good if it is a community program?
Not at all!! It all depends on what you're looking for in your residency training. University programs will be research and academics heavy, vs. community programs will be more intimate and you'll have more one on one interaction with faculty! That's just in general
Why do people do a research year after intern year if they've already matched into an advanced program? Just to have something to do? Can you match into an intern year programme without applying for a categorical year? Does anyone ever do that?
This is only if they match into an advanced program while they're doing their intern year, because they'd have to wait a year before starting their advanced program. If you matched both your intern year and your advanced program as a 4th year med student, then no need for a year in between :)

Great video, but the comment about four years of medical school not being enough to practice as a physician really rubbed me the wrong way... You have PA's and NP's with only a couple years of specialized schooling - many programs are fully online as well - and very few, if any, standardized exams, running around playing doctor right after graduation (with MD/DO supervision if the patients are lucky). Yet, four universally rigorous years of medical school with multiple STEP exams are somehow not enough? No one else in the healthcare team gets this much formal medical training as physicians, plain and simple. Please do not downplay the knowledge and expertise of your fellow physicians
Hey I think she was referring to the fact that medical school graduates still have a lot to learn in residency.
