It helped when Dark Horse held the Star Wars license for over 20 years. Gratuitously sending it back to Marvel hurt. It was inevitable, but DH really put a lot of care into its SW comics that isn't really there at Marvel anymore. (Marvel seems very, very bored with the property now.)
I dunno about this. Yaboizack said they got lazy since it always sold regardless of quality, and only started putting out comics that were decent in the last five years before they lost the rights. I don't know how true this is.

The late era "Rebels" Dark Horse comics are crap. But yeah Dark Horse has held numerous licenses far better (to me as a reader) than Marvel: Predator, Alien, Star Wars (up until Rebels) off the top of my head.

The thing I like about Dark Horse most in the recent years is their line of Art books. I'd say that Dark Horse's release of artbooks from my favorite japanese game series get a pre-order as soon as announced - but there aren't many things from recent creators in the comic department that I care much, mostly it have been older franchises (like Usagi Yojimbo).
They have the rights to make Lord of the Rings comics, as a result of being acquired by that Swedish company last year. They could get HUGE. Hire a Tolkien scholar, have somebody with a sense of vision spearhead the LOTR line, and advertise not just to comic readers but to people who would give comics a try for more LOTR. There is so much potential here
Dark Horse has a decent line of manga, but they haven't been consistent with keeping them in print, or releasing them en masse like Viz. While I can appreciate this approach, it does seem to have hurt them somewhat. Viz is like the McDonalds of manga, they keep releasing high quantity, low quality stuff, year after year. Most of the Viz manga I have are yellowed now with age, but most of the Dark Horse manga is still pretty much the same as when I bought it.
Dark Horse has probably been living of Berserk and Hellboy sales for a long time, but they are a diversified comics publisher so they will probably be fine in the marketplace. I'm just happy when they put out good books or reprints. Doesn't seem like they are really set up to expand from where they are now.
Dark Horse for me is home to Horror, Sci-Fi, and Quirky comics. Dark Horse is a company that could easily relaunch the Black and White illustrated Anthology Magazines in the vein of Warren and Harris publishing.
In hindsight it’s weird Dark Horse wasn’t bigger. They had Alien. They had Predator. They had Terminator. They had Star Wars. They had a smattering of cool and hot artists doing stuff for them. And they had The Mask, and The Mask was pretty big for a few years after the Jim Carrey movie. But I almost never saw Dark Horse stuff in the grocery store like I did Marvel, DC, and even Topps in the '90s when they were doing Jurassic Park, Mars Attacks, and X-Files comics. Like occasionally there’d be some Alien vs Predator title, or like Predator vs Tarzan and Alien: Mondo Heat. And there were some Mask comics. But I don’t think I ever saw Hellboy on a shelf, or Monkeyman & O’Brien. And until like ‘99 or 2000 I don’t think I saw any of the Star Wars comics either...and comics were kind of done as single issues by that point. I probably saw more comics with the Alien and Predator being put out by DC when they’d fight Batman and Superman than I saw from Dark Horse. It’s just odd they were never able to really make anything happen when they had the rights to such big and beloved series. Aliens, Predator, and Terminator were also all popular kids toy lines when I was a kid too; kids would’ve eaten comics of those up just like Batman and the X-Men in the '90s if we could actually get our hands on them. Dark Horse was really good about trades. There was a few years where when I’d go into a book store and look at trades in the early 2000s where most of them (and there wasn’t a lot back then) were mostly Dark Horse comics.
Dark Horse is the only American comic company I care about, they publishing the best story ever written, Berserk. And also Gantz, which is also amazing, I just wish they’d publish these quicker, and I also want a deluxe edition of Gantz, I have all the 3-in-1’s, but I also want it in deluxe. And the 3 deluxe of Hellsing are the nicest looking books I have, the bright red faux leather deluxe editions look great.
I love Dark Horse. Hellboy is one of my favorite comic characters. They're Star Wars comics were amazing, especially Takes of the Jedi. Sin City is one of the greatest comic worlds of all time. I've been reading their Tarzan books and they're beautiful. I could go on all day.
I would like to see IP that brings more comic buyers to Dark Horse. I haven't seen any ideas from any companies which break the superhero stranglehold on American comics
They have the rights to Lord of the Rings comics now, bc of the company that bought them last year. That could totally change the comic market, if they take advantage and play their cards right
Dark Horse should focus on dark fantasy/sci-fi/adventure/horror. They should be grabbing Indy titles and creators and carve their own niche out of the market.
I think if dark horse just makes original IPs, that are good (doesn't have to only be this), keeps that writer artist combo on there for as long as they possibly can, or just let the artist write it, that alone would give them a hold above other comics. Like if webcomics can keep some damn talent on the same series, dark horse should be able to, everybody should be able to
NGL,I only became aware of Dark Horse when I figured out they used to publish Buffy & Angel comics. Angel &Faith s9 is the best series from that era IMO
They're printing the physical copies of some of the Substack creators like Bendis & Snyder, along with all the A list artists involved with those books but it seems to have created very little buzz. I've always liked Dark Horse & buy stuff they put out fairly regularly but nothing seems to make a dent in the perception of them. They're just there.
I wonder if there'd be space for a company that went hard in on sexier comics. Nowadays, comics with very attractive, scantily clad women have been ceded to the crowdfunders and the big 2 seem to be openly disavowing such books. Could DH pull in Brian Pulido or some of the other more successful indie creators in that market.
What about Dark Horse? Something almost nobody else is mentioning in the comment is that Dark Horse has a small but interesting superhero universe including Ghost (got the action figure!), X, and apparently Captain Midnight, all of whom teamed up in a title in 2012. It also has the incredibly funny sexy superhero manga Empowered by Adam Warren (we have almost all of the collected volumes). Very surprised that more hasn't been done with these characters: why hasn't Empowered become an adult cartoon by now; and why hasn't Ghost become a TV series?
I was honestly surprised Dark Horse wasn't purchase by Netflix when they were shopping themselves around. Seemed like a no-brainer, Netflix wants IP and they can also start to further build out a comic/manga platform to make their own app or to add an additional comic/manga service to your existing Netflix bundle.
Dark Horse has done several moves where they only look at the short-term gain, instead of the long-term growth. For example, Dark Horse had the Conan comic book license. And then, they got the license from DC Comics to do a Wonder Woman-Conan one-shot. Decent story by Gail Simone and great art by Aaron Lopresti, but it felt like a setup for a sequel or on-going series. Dark Horse lost the Conan comic book license to Marvel Comics, so that ended any chance of a sequel. Also, I doubt Dark Horse would constantly pay to license Wonder Woman. In the long run, did Dark Horse benefit? Nope. If, however, WB Discovery decides to license out DC Comics...then I think Wonder Woman would be a good fit at Dark Horse. We could even see the Wonder Woman stories that Greg Rucka and Gail Simone wanted to do, but Dan DiDio didn't let them do. Yeah, I realize having Wonder Woman under Dark Horse is a pipe dream.
The way I think about it, if Marvel is, let's say Metallica, and DC is, let's say Slayer, then Dark Horse is something like Morbid Angel. They're well established, they do what they do very well and they have a solid fanbase, but you're not likely to see their albums on the shelves at Dunnes Stores.
There going through a similar situation to Tokyo pop they lost a lot of titles because frank miller started his own publisher and Disney bought fox and taking Alien and predator which sucks
One area dark horse has had success with over the years is licensed properties and with IDW moving away from that Dark Horse could step in and fill the void. Promise to do the license product justice to give it a serious creative team. Become number one in licensed properties and you can Branch off from there.
Dark Horse's Robert E. Howard series were respectful of the source material, created by artists who can draw beautifully and writers who understand the characters and their world. Marvel simply treated Conan as a superhero (even publishing a crossover with Wolverine - come on, Wolverine?!?). I'm glad the licence has passed to Titan, I have higher hopes for their take on the Hyborian Age.
You may be right that it would be a better strategy for them to visibly market their company's distinctive advantages, but if that was at all their intention, then I don't think that they would have named it Dark Horse in the first place. The very meaning of that label is an enigmatic underdog, a perpetually underrated yet competitive maverick. But, otherwise, you have put your finger right on all of the points that any finger can be put right on.
Must admit I have No time for Marvel and DC, LOVE the more indie graphic novels and comic companys and I LOVE DARK HORSE, Just read Shock Shop and it's a fantastic read especially the story something in the woods. Love horror.
I always felt Dark Horse didn't develope enough original content. Licensing had to have been expensive and there was too much gimmick stuff. Nurturing original IPs would've given them a more solid foundation. But I did love their Conan line and I collected Buffy comics for years.
I enjoyed the BPRD comics for years and bought a lot of their related horror/adventure comics - but the super long story-line at the end of the series was a turn off. The length of the story and the unusual numbering (of the floppies) made it difficult for me to stay engaged in my back issues and once most of the BPRD cast was killed off I became less interested in company as a whole.
I don't like manga. I totally agree they need something new, a new series that's not on the dark side. There are too many dark type of comics that would have scared me as a child. They need a specialization. Too many styles and characters that give variety but no cohesiveness.
I have a bone to pick with Dark horse because they won't reprint Blood Blockade Battlefront which is a shame because digital hurt my eyes and kills them
Is Dark Horse still creator owned? If a new guy gets his new character published by DH tomorrow is that original character now owned by Embracer or is that character owned by its original creator?
I don’t agree with the take care. The big twos focus is to prostitute out there comic book companies to gain Hollywood licensing deals. If Darkhorse simply focuses on doing comics better than the industry and finding that audience, and not dreaming of trying to re-capture whatever heyday of large revenue generating sales that will never come back again… They will likely find a great niche to occupy. That will be hard given the sub stacks, the digital age where comics hasn’t ever innovated yet with and other things, but there’s a lane for them to occupy. I would suggest the abject failure of the big two to try to force Diversity into those companies is because that isn’t where the audience actually lives. I’ve mentioned several times here that my children do not buy comic books and especially from Marvel or DC. They are attracted to the meme posting on social media of comics, and they would likely be more attracted to going to a bookstore and looking at a tree paperback that’s published by Darkhorse or any other independent publisher. Then they would ever under any circumstances go to marvel or DC, either with characters did grandfather light or new characters that are essentially knock offs of those independence stories that you find in a dark horse itself.
