    They pressure test those pumps at the factory. That's why the new pump's impeller had rust on it.

    Retired stationary engineer here . Can you just replace the broken pump coupler on the B & G pump ? You wouldn't have to open the pump volute up if thats all it needs , just unbolt the motor from the pump and change the spring coupler. Those couplers are always going bad poor design unless the pump is always on . If it cycles they don't last long.

    Great video man. I work in a similar industry and knew the exact pressure you were feeling lol. Sometimes you have to take a step back and realize it's not your fault if the customer doesn't take care of their equipment. All those unlabeled valves, that boiler room was a mess. Looking forward to the next update on this.

    Hearing "we're gonna have to shut down water for a 24 hour hotel" brought back memories, of us trying to redo an entire riser, on 70 floors, and every floor had 45 rooms AND every room had their own riser. Plus every riser had to get T sections for the fan coil units that were in the rooms as well.
    Half the hotel was still active while we worked.
    Biggest crew i've ever been on, it was 30 guys, with 10 foot stacks of various sized copper. Putting in the risers weren't too bad, we fed every one from the top and pre-connected every one as we went so we didnt run into problems.
    Job went pretty smooth, but god damn you realize how greedy some of these hotels are. Job would go WAY easier if the hotel wasnt active and we'd get it done faster, but bottom line means more than getting done earlier I guess.

    That 3” is the boiler water make up, Why is the bypass open, nothing labeled that’s an extremely poor boiler room! There are companies that can freeze the pipe so the valve could be replaced without taking the system down? Something to look into for future repairs as it looks like your the new maintenance man!

    No need to replace the complete pump. All that is needed is the spring coupler between bearing assembly and motor and then you would not have to drain. And the pump you picked up may not even be the proper GPM as those are normally designed for the application.

    • @andresland9906

      Lol this guy is a parts changer , you are right he should've replaced the coupling.

    • @topher8634
      @topher8634 3 місяці тому +2

      That's usually what's needed but I have seen the pump be locked down and that's what will break the coupler. It probably wasn't a bad idea to put a new one in, especially if it had a lot of run time on it or proper maintenance or water treatment hasn't been done.

    • @christopherleubner6633
      @christopherleubner6633 3 місяці тому +3

      That is the typical case, but this one the pump was subjected to both misalignment and overload from the valve being almost shut off. Likely the pump head shaft bearing failed and caused the coupler to fail. They are designed to do that to prevent the motor from going up in flames.❤

  • @christopherleubner6633
    @christopherleubner6633 3 місяці тому

    You could get a flex coupler and fix the old pump if the bearings are ok. They do wear out eventually. In this case you made the right call for replacement over repair as the original was subjected to fairly severe abuse that made the flex coupler fail.❤

  • @user-rz8ps4js5m
    @user-rz8ps4js5m 3 місяці тому +2

    It looks like the impeller broke off the shaft. That broken coupler spins to freely for that size pump. And why use 2 coupling when you could have just put the valve on the pipe then tie it back into the other pipe with one coupling. Less change for leaks. But then it nice to sit on my couch and be the Quarterback. Great job

      A lot of guys do, and a lot of guys don't. Although I do understand when pressing is needed. Jumperman did a video where there was so little access to the pipes due to the order they were installed that the only way to make a repair without repiping everything was with press fittings. I think in situations like this it is also fine to press (under time pressure and in a non-ventilated space; possibly the only 2" valve they had on hand). But I agree soldering is the gold standard. The press fittings aren't any less reliable, but they make repairs more difficult and cost more.
      I don't like seeing press fittings on easily accessible pipes in residential, that's just being lazy and racking up a big bill for the customer. I see guys do a garden hose replacement and do like 20 presses and it just seems ridiculous and non-servicable.

    • @JD-hr6dr
      @JD-hr6dr 3 місяці тому +4

      Ball valves less likely to leak, but sometimes get seized in a single position.
      Ball valves are superior overall, but they are bigger and often more expensive. When space is a consideration, Gate valves are better

    • @christopherleubner6633
      @christopherleubner6633 3 місяці тому

      As a rule balll valves are my favorite because they shut off at two points, gate valves only one point internally. Gate valves are cheaper, though. Really depends on the use case.

  • @EyebrowsMahoney
    @EyebrowsMahoney 3 місяці тому

    Man what a rats nest of pipe. I feel like that building had gone through several different boilers to have that screwed up of a pipe layout. The fact that they had the bypass open with the pressure regulator open probably says that the regulator is trashed too.
    All these building owners just don't wanna do maintenance and then complain when everything is broken and complain and beat up on technicians doing whatever bubblegum fix they can to make it keep working because they don't want to pay to fix it properly. That bypass shouldn't even be open - so either their new boilers outflow the reg, or the reg is trash. Honestly not surprised that the pumps are the way they are. I mean looks like there's even a storage tank that's AIP'd in there for probably rotting out.
    It's just so typical man. Can't stand it. You got these big name places reporting record profits, raising prices to consumers, but their buildings and equipment are held together with chewing gum and a prayer and a massive safety/health hazard...

If you cant flip that valve in off position you have only one thing to do: Those pipes are copper just cut the pipe, pinch it with pliers and braze it, Thats gonna hold till you sort out another pump problem! You can thanks me later... and please get your self socket set if you wanna play with this big boys!!!

      Nah why spend time brazing and cutting if you just need to go back, circuit is offline anyways, best to do it all at one go when your not exhausted but yeah definitely would work in a pinch

    Why didn't you just rebuild the clutch? Would have been simpler and cheaper for the customer...

    You did a lot of work for nothing. All you had to do was replace the coupler. At most replace just the bearing assembly. You are costing your customer a lot of money that they don't need to spend.

    What I don't get about such places - if a night in those rooms is that expensive, which beat-down equipment they rely on. That's a disaster just waiting to happen and sooner or later it *will* happen.
