  • At number 8 in our countdown of the most iconic #AusAirForce aircraft, it’s the Avro Lancaster.
Entering production in 1942, the Lancaster was a vital heavy bomber in the European theatre of World War II. Thousands of Australians like Flying Officer Ray Merrill DFC (retired) flew dozens of sorties in the ‘Lanc’, carrying out crucial Bomber Command air raids and helping to secure victory against Germany.
Have you visited the “G for George” Lancaster at the Australian War Memorial? Flown by No. 460 Squadron RAAF Bomber Command, the aircraft flew ninety operational missions over Germany and occupied Europe before its retirement from active service in 1944.

Aussies and Kiwis also flew in other RAF commands including Fighter and Coastal, flying such iconic aircraft as the Spitfire and Sunderland.
They were great, brave young men but sadly as time passes young people learn less and less of history, but we in the UK, who know their stories, will forever remember and honour them.

My Great Grandfather fought in a Lancaster for the New Zealand Airforce and was an Air Gunner. A Magnificent story of his that was very lucky is that, he was sick the day his crew went out. Sadly they were shot down, he still fought as a gunner in two other squadrons.

I inherited an original photo taken by my RAAF Uncle, of a Lancaster in Mt. Gambier, South Australia, during the war.
I have to find somewhere to donate it, lest it be lost.
    Any suggestions?

So in reality, Australia had only 2 Lanc's, and 4000 Australians did not fly in 2 RAAF Lanc's. So as to this being a site commemorating RAAF aircraft, why are you talking about the brave australians fighting on the side of the brits. You didn't see any Brit's defending Darwin or Port Moresby, but we continually have to fight their War's, bought time they ask us, he guys do you want to join us fighting some idiots we picked a fight with. Oh NO we are in the commonwealth, we are expected to save your asses over and over and over. Enough is enough, fight your own war's if you can?
So in reality 2 RAAF Lanc's did not fight in the European Theater of Operations, too bloody far to fly 2 aircraft that would be worn out before they arrived. So how about reality RAAF, how many Australian Lanc's fought in the ETO and how many did we just crew? And DIE... the German's weren't attacking Australia, and the Japanese left Australia alone until they attacked Pearl. Remember this page is about the AIrcraft RAAF not the Aircrew...
