  • At Number 9 in our countdown of the most iconic #AusAirForce aircraft is the one that helped start it all, the S.E.5A.
When the Royal Australian Air Force was formed on 31 March 1921, the S.E.5A was part of Britain’s imperial gift to help establish our new organisation.
As our first fighter aircraft, Australian aircrews flew the S.E.5A in combat during World War I before its transition into a crucial training platform during the 1920s.
Today only six original S.E.5As remain in the world. Have you been lucky enough to see one of these historic aircraft?

I know this doesn’t really fit in this video but I visited RAF Cosford England, and it has a magnificently restored Sopwith Pup N5182 which was flown by Australian aviator, Ace and hero Robert A Little, with all the information on N5182, as an Australian born Englishman I was very proud of both my wonderful nations stood in font of this historic aircraft.
Edit, and there is a plaque in font of the Pup with a nice write up on RA Little himself.

I know it may not count as 'iconic' but I do hope the Boomerang gets a mention.

It should do seeing as it's the only Australian aircraft ever to serve in the RAAF because I'm pretty sure only the Army flew the GAF Nomad

I wonder if it might be the C-47.
It was the longest serving aircraft and is the most iconic aircraft of the whole World

@@MartintheTinman You're forgetting about about the CAC Wirraway which is also Aussie and served in the RAAF.

      @@MrDeath2094 . It's not.
It was a Texan made under licence by CAC.
The Boomerang is the only aircraft to serve in the RAAF that is wholly designed and built in Australia
BTW the Wirraway isn't the only aircraft built in Australia.
There are a plethora of aircraft built in Australia but all under licence.
      Beaufort
      Beaufighter
      Beaufrieghter
      Wirraway
      Mosquito
      Mustang
      Sabre
      Mirage
      Hornet

I hope that the Sunderland Flying Boat gets a mention. My Father was a Flight Engineer in 10 SQN RAAF based in Plymouth during the second world war - a Sunderland man through and through.

Only one Hurricane ever actually made it to Australia.
V7476 and it was used purely for evaluation purposes
