100% of the reason is that self serve car washes fail is because most people treat it as passive income and neglect their business. When equipment fails, customers are not likely to return to it. Repeat business is needed for businesses like these and if you fail to take care of your property and keep it in optimum working condition as well as being clean, you will see a drop in revenue.
I live in a small town, there are 3 car washes here. One of them stole a dollar from me at the change machine. I called the owner to let him know, he said he would fix it within an hour and mail me my dollar and a coupon. I never got my dollar back. I've never gone back to that car wash, and I never will. It's been a couple years.
There's a street in the town I live in that not only has tons of car washes, but people have constructed at least 3 BRAND NEW car washes in the past 2 years. Leads me to believe it's highly profitable because they build them so close to competition.
They fail because most owners need the income to live off of and don’t reinvest for maintenance. That means there’s opportunity to buy them, add value, sweat equity and then profit while providing a needed service to people who don’t want to scratch their cars or can’t afford a monthly membership.
Keep your car wash in good working condition and keep promotions it on local social media. You can continue to survive. I prefer self service car washes so that I can get all of my car clean! Tunnel washes don’t always do that for me.
A lot of self service car washes and some automatic ones I see are attached to gas station all-in-one's like Casey's and Jordan's (two chains we have here in the South similar to Love's and Pilot stations but on a smaller scale). Between offering gas, restaurants inside, and a car wash, they seem to spread themselves thin and the car wash gets neglected as long as a single bay or two sort of works. I wish we had more automated brushless touchless washes, but they seem very expensive to build, and those are usually dedicated sites in highly populated areas. I use one when I need a quick, thorough wash in the winter and I don't want to hand wash out in the cold or use a brush wash that might scratch the paint, but going 45 mins each way to the brushless automatic wash seems to defeat the purpose of the trip. Any dirt you get off will get back on the car after 45 mins at 70 mph on the freeway. At least here in the South we don't have to worry much about road salt (sand is used more for traction and breaking up ice).
There is a dual function option, blows and sucks. Uses pinch valves to open/close vacuum/blow dry. Bit of a big hit to retro install though. 4" vac pvc run and 2" blow pvc run.
You should! If you come all this way we will need to make a video. I am going to take the machine into my repair guy and make sure its functioning as it should.
The other problem I have noticed is A lot of the automatic car washes are very affordable now most of the time it’s $10 for the cheapest and between $20 to $30 for a unlimited membership and you get free vacuums and and they give you towels to dry and so on it’s a much better experience for the customers. Coin car washes it’s easy to spend $10 if you are efficient and cleaning something big like a truck and for that your car doesn’t get dried and you still have to pay to vacuum not mention lots of coin car washes are in poor condition with many features not working
All the self-serve car washes in my area are being converted to membership based tunnel car washes. Now I have to drive 40 mins for the nearest self-serve car wash which gets really crowded.
In my mind I would have 1 self serve wash stall. I’m in Louisiana and it would be nice for ultra muddy trucks to be able to knock off the big mud before going through the Robo wash.
Car washes like this in locations that get a lot of rain or snow tends to be more seasonal as to somewhere like Southern California, we have sun 90% of the year and no rain so there’s no seasonal slow periods.
My neighbors pay a monthly fee for the last several years for a mobile car washing and cleaning service. They have about 5 cars and they get a bulk discount. The mobile tech also has a vacuum cleaner which he uses to clean the inside of the car. * Saves time and money for my neighbor and he gets a job done better than he could do himself.
I would go to self service car washes if they had better chemicals and foam canons and whatnot. Most of the time when I go to them the chemicals suck and I have to scrub to get the car clean. And I definitely won’t be using the brush on the wall. Better chemicals will break down the dirt better.
It’s snowing outside: “self serve car washes are dying”. Location location location. Where I’m at there’s lots of trucks and off road vehicles and every self serve car wash has auto tunnels as well which also stay busy.
Where I live at there is only self serve car washes which tends to have 4 bays and 1 automatic bay. I don't know of any car tunnel type wash places within least 40 miles from where I live.
I used to have the same observation but recently moved. In my old area there were alot of single-bay automatic touchless machines attached to gas stations. In my new area there are TONS of these brushed tunnel washes.
Where I live, we have a self service car wash on almost every block. It's kind of unreal and none look like they are going out of business. We also have plenty of full service car washes too, so maybe location has a big reason for success or failure. I live on the east central coast of FL. Not super populated, but a county (fairly big county)of about 400k.
Sucks..because tunnel washes do a fairly decent job but the scratches just are not worth it to me. I want to do it by hand with the wand. We have a local car wash here.. the building and such was in pretty good shape 4 self serve, 1 touch, and 1 touchless wash. They tore it down and put a tunnel in it's place :( Must really be a lot more valuable to the business when they seen it worth it to tear down a perfectly good building and such to replace it.
Car washes don’t scratch. I can see where you’re coming from, however it’s a common myth. Even when they do scratch it’s far less than when you wash it yourself or with any other method. Hand wash applies here too.
Cant say I have done a lot of research in this area but my opinion is that most car washes that are moderately maintained wont scratch but overtime they will leave swirl marks in the clearcoat that needs to be repaired by a detailer with paint correction. Usually this is most noticeable in black cars.
They make an attachment with rollers to slide under the car and rinse it off but I have seen few car wash owners install them. Maybe not enough bang for the buck.
What is the average cost of buying a self serve car wash ? I know it might depend on location, I always wanted to own a self serve wash and update all the equipment to a more modern look
