What an unbelievable performance. The singing by the lead vocals are very good, but the backings and the whole sound of the song is just fantastic!

i guess getting older means having emotions closer to the sufrace. this music never made me cry when i was a kid. now i cant help it. maybe its because i appreciate beauty more now that ive seen the ugliness people inflict on others, and the harmony, purity, and innocence of beach boys music means so much more.

"Moving the goal posts" is just an analogy for "changing the game". The technical point is equally simple. Basic chords, a.k.a. triads, contain 3 notes. Think of them as every other white key on a piano (take a, c & e from abcdefga to get an A minor chord) . EJ is crediting BW with using the c or the e as the lowest note. The idea has been around for ever, e.g. in jazz or anything post-Monteverdi in classical - though maybe was "rediscovered." BW did lots of stuff so well. . .

When was this recorded? I don't think Brian sings quite this much anymore. He let's his band handle lead vocals while he occasionally claps and sings back-ups.

what?! Pet Sounds is perfect as it is; and what do you mean "music-wise"? You noticed the bridges. You have probably never listened to Pet Sounds through the headphones, as Brian suggests. You're right this is good!

Isn't that Van Dyke Parks in the audience when the clip starts?

@gpawlicki Thank you for that. I realize now that I need to know alot more about music, if I am ever going to understand what you just said. Maybe I will someday.
    Thanks for caring !

Gotta give it up to Elton for a hell of a job. Too bad neither of these guys could duplicate this effort in 2012...

Could someone who knows keyboards and music, please explain what EJ meant at sec 45 to 50, with regards to BW, "moving the goalposts" when it came to writing songs??? Elton said he was getting 'very technical', and it sure sounds like it !
I would like to have some understanding of what Elton meant, if that's possible, without giving me a semester of music lessons.
I am just a consumer of great music, not a creator.

In a scale you start with the root then have seven notes in that scale the definition of a chord is any combination of a root and a third or a fith note played at the same time. You can add any note in but a chord has to be a root and a third or fith. For example your typical chord is comprised in a root a third and a fifth. Brian was one of the first song writers in pop and rock that would have the bass note weather played on piano or bass guitar to play a fith a third or sometimes a seventh giving the chord structures to his music a highly unuique and game changing quality. Before this the baas useally play the root and the rest of the chord structures would be built up from there. Truly a genuis.

+TheDiabethick Many great singers do that lol in particular, Joe Cocker did that a LOT. When I sing, I kind of do it too. It's really just a matter of getting as much of your body into your singing as you can, and it somehow feels right, despite it looking odd to others.
