One of the difficulties was the fuel supply trucks keeping up with the Abrams tanks. The M1 Abrams gets 1 mile for every 2 gallons of fuel, but can still travel 60MPH and shoot accurately while at speed. Sometimes the Abrams would have to halt their advance and wait for the fuel trucks to catch up and refuel them.

As a combat veteran, I can say this...these graphics make everything look pretty neat and tidy, on the ground is anything but. From the POV of the soldiers on the ground, everything is one big confusing clusterfuck, but we carry out our orders and fight for our brothers and sisters, and Ultimately achieve victory.
Also, if you find yourself facing America in open conflict, and you find you have the element of surprise or have the initiative, don't think, just do...because it won't last long, and it'll never happen again.

If I remember correctly, we learned from this war to start painting white X's on top of our vehicles so pilots would know not to fire on our own men. Being part of a P3 squadron (Pacific Wing 2 AKA ComPacWing2), we were not needed in Iraq (not too many submarines in the desert), so even though I was in the Navy, I was not part of the fighting. Mad respect to you guys. For those that don't know what P3's are used for, they are Anti-Submarine Warfare planes.
A buddy of mine was an MP in the Army at the time and was basically relegated to guarding prisoners. He told me the conscripted Iraqis were so poorly fed that they would just show up at the detention areas and throw down their weapons and surrender just get a food.

The training is so immersive that it is organized chaos. After each couple of days , act I on action reviews are done where the unit will rank what went well and what went bad along with ways to fix those things. Then, at the end, over the training rotation, there is an overall aar conducted.

In 1990 America's military might was substantial. As we just had the better part of 50 years of innovation and technology along side highly skilled and experienced personal advancing technology to a new style of warfare. America was waiting for a new conflict to flex its military might and it found operation desert shield as a defensive maneuver then advancing to an offensive naming it operation desert Storm. The timing of the war and modern technology couldn't have been any other way. It is the precursor to WW3 even more so than Afghanistan war. Innovation wasn't sparked during Afghanistan like it was in Desert Storm. Us Americans that make up the average "Armed" Citizenry do not wish for war and did not vote for this current crazy train administration. 🇺🇲 God Bless our Troops.

America is extremely aggressive in their attacks and fast moving while European is visually appearing slow to get going . Sometimes USA takes extra casualties but has a “ let’s roll “ framework when advancing . The Brit’s fight hard but hesitate to get moving and wants overwhelming superiority over enemy to avoid casualties . USA lives on speed and deadlines at all costs .

General Schwarzkopf was not an Armor or Cavalry officer but Infantry, and had no experience with large movements of Armor. His push with the 15 Hour thing was a mistake he would admit to later in his book. VII Corp heavy armor in desert, and the M1 consume un belibveable amounts of fuel and the Logistic network has to work, fucking with the time table, and schedules for fuel resupply was not a wise decision. Infantry can walk, Tanks you can not push them? Playing Patton's bull shit charge to the Rhine he almost committed, leaving his tanks with no fuel, in enemy territory. General Fred Franks commander VII Corp finally got the message across the effects it would have. An Army moves with its slowest forces and that was the Logistic train of VII Corp, trying to keep up with M1 and Bradley's, with Vietnam era equipment, and not enough of it? They would need double the resources to resupply that big of a force. And a New fuel, and supply vehicles to be built, and supplied after the war. I am sure those lessons are passed on to Ukraine, but Russian to stupid to get it.

And sure those poor, poor Iraqis attacking our HQ may have had the drop on us, saying there completely horrible shots. Isn’t the most fair assessment as they are facing US Marines, and we are killing them, from the ground and air, as they try to attack. So it’s not like we we let them do it, and we’ll they lost, we didn’t, in that localized fight, which was one of so many going on, off and on. All across the front. Some really. Really tried, but we’re better at war, far, far better.

Really shows how complicated modern warfare is, hundreds of thousands of men and machines, all having to work in perfect harmony, throw nature into the mix and you have a recipe for disaster but the US has become very good at riding that knife's edge. Russia's invasion of ukraine shows what happens when you aren't prepared for modern warfare.

Aggressive movement as demanded by General Schwarzkopf is real. You chase your enemy forcing errors and not allowing them time to breathe, think or organize. He was absolutely right. Ukraine's army has done this to Russians when they go on the offensive. Ukraine when conducting a withdrawal, does it exactly as it should be done. Effective rearguard and flank protection. Russians just turn and run.

    @butchgriggs6325 Рік тому

Do not worry about laughing at the war strategy and the events that occured. I know you "hope everyone is OK and come out alright". But it's war and nobody ever is whole again. We understand people will die. That includes friendly fire. Combined arms and war itself is extremely difficult. Extremely technical. The reason the Brits were behind was for reinforcement/counter attack. Also, Americans have a communication system. The British have a different system. Arab's as well, etc. So for smooth operations. Americans have to go first. Today we all have a system used by all.
LAV's and M-60 tanks are not a match for American Abrahms, Bradly's et al, or British Challenger's et al. The LAV is lightly armored and weaponised but they move really fast and are impossible for a T-55 to hit. Imagine...T-55's are old tanks. Very old, even in 1991. There's a guy in that T-55 manually aiming the turret with a hand crank. Much like a sailboat raising the sail. The actual gunner is telling him to crank it. So to hit something. They have to work together. The T-55 also have to stand still for a well aimed shot. Marines only know one way after "stay put"...That's "Move forward". "retreat" is not in the handbook. The Cobra's are the older version of next gen Apache copters. As the M-60 is to Abrahms.
Once we got the size and composition of the Iraqi's. We broke out of our positions and went straight after them. I am an 0351. Anti tank/engineer. We fire the Dragon back then. 1K meter range, wire guided, Monroe effect missile that will kill anything on the battlefield and it's shoulder fired. The Cpl. that closed with and destroyed the first T-55 with a LAW rocket. Effective max range is about 300-350 meters. I've hit a tank at 425 meters at the range. You have to overshoot the target by 1.25 tank height. A dragon missile will kill at 1100 meters(1K meters in the manual...They lie!...lmao). Some say 1150 meters but I believe the wire broke and it flew 200 meters wireless. By then you'd have a solid lock in your sights. It flies at 100 meters a second. So 10 seconds holding the sight on target as their cannons traverse your way immediately. Dragon has fiery breath that will kill you if you are in it's backblast, and it gives away your position.
The reason nobody was hit in the initial engagement was they were either laying down sleeping. Or they were behind the initial bunks/fighting hole system you see on the map. Or simply missed and that too is highly likely to be the reasons. Within seconds every Marine was fighting back. We do not sleep in our jammies.
Once the Cobras were on station. The Marine LAV's moved forward immediately. Marines gain force multipliers on combined arms attacks even though we have the oldest equipment in Americas arsenal. Vietnam era and early cold war era stuff for the USMC.

The Iraqi army was a very well trained and well equipped army. This document is very biased. People do not realise it took 42 countries led by the u.s.a to liberate Kuwait. I wonder how it would have turned out if the u.s went in on its own. Now there’s a thought.

Iraq had the 4th largest army in the world at the time, but a large part of it was conscripts. The American military is all volunteer by contrast and treats their military very well compared to almost all other militaries. This makes a HUGE difference in morale.

After years of military build up that was supposed to go against the Soviet Union, the build of all the A-10's, F-16's, F-15, Apache attack helicopter, M2 Bradley's , and the M1 Abrams finally came ahead. This was the trial by fire moment. They all came through with months of training and the use of combined arms meaning air craft dropping guided bombs, attack helicopters going after artillery and other troop carriers like the BMP-1, and finally tanks is what overwhelmed the Iraqi's. That's something that Russia hasn't done in Ukraine and they are losing around 700 to 1100 troops a day because they are that incompetent. The Iraqi's at least the Republican Guard put up a fight, they had inferior tanks and equipment, but they put up a fight. They died but at least they weren't incompetent like Russia has been.
