The BMW opposed engines with a shaft drive actually can outperform most other bikes of comparable displacement. The reason you don’t see them winning races is because bikes with shaft drives aren’t allowed to compete with chain drive bikes.
I test bikes as part of my living... the boxers do not out perform the inline fours or triples or even sports v twins of similar displacement. Not even close. Sure they're great road engines I cannot deny that but in terms of out right performance a late 90's or early 00's litre bike will hammer a 1200 boxer engine. And I've rode the r18 too, cool and fun but it definitely would not win the traffic light gp against my ktm 690 smcr and that's a single with 70ish bhp

I think this bike is great. It has style and personality. It has bunch of useful features yet somehow manages to keep retro aesthetics. If I had $18k laying around, would definitely get this beauty.
I rode this a lot working at a bmw shop in Southern California. Test rides, company trips, and I borrowed one for a couple of weeks. It’s a beast that actually handles pretty well, within it’s obvious limits, through the canyons. And that violent shake when it starts is an experience every time. Torque is nuts. I rode a lot of different Harleys too. Such a different experience and feel. Im an s1000xr rider but the R18 is a super fun cruiser. But if you’re tall, that cylinder can get in the way.

I have owned around 20; if not more motorcycles. Most left me feeling pretty blah after a short time. Some scared the crap out of me. And some i regret not having anymore; especially the Triumph Thunderbird Storm. My last bike was a 2019 BMW R1250 RT. Fabulously smooth bike, but ultimately it had no character and no soul. So, i took a test ride on the new R9T since BMW finally put cruise on it. I bike i always thought would be great and i hated it from the get go. Took the R18 out and equally hated that too. The took a test ride on the R18 Classic....I fell in love! The R18 and R18 Classic are night and day different due to tire/wheel size. The Classic rides so much better, i just love it. It does have some quirks handling-wise that can pucker your butt if your not careful, but you adapt and learn. That being said-this is not a beginners bike. It will subdue you into jail time speeds on the freeway because it is smooth and the engine just never seems to be working very hard. (I believe it is conservatively tuned) Also, i am 5'7" and what BMW has created without knowing; is the perfect BIG- BIKE for short people!!!!! If you are taller than 5'10" or so, i don't think you will enjoy this bike. In summary it is a gorgeous, fun, and unique bike with some quirks that I'm actually ok with and enjoy. Always enjoy your reviews Yammie. I would add that BMW offers Hill Assist on other bikes and it is an invaluable feature at long lights and on grades, but you have to learn how to use it. (probably how you stalled it-hill assist was on). You can get cruise, but i don't believe it is standard on the R18. The gauge cluster does have a digital tachometer and other scrollable readouts. Also, the bike has reverse which is just fricking invaluable on such a heavy bike. I agree about the seat being crap, but still not as bad as a Ducati. I also agree about the tank size of 4 gallons. Come on BMW-a 5 or 6 gallon tank and a fuel gauge should come on a $20,000 motorcycle. A fuel gauge does nothing to detract from the "retro" styling; if that was their mindset. And the lack of one is my only true gripe about the R18/R18 Classic.
I want to go to dealer and have a look at this motorcycle in person. The more vibration, sound and difficult a motorcycle is, the more I get attracted to it, and also love this for overall style, reminds me of vintage motorcycle, which I love.
Not a cruiser guy, but that chromed two wheel freight train look definitely has appeal, and BMW is all about the details. There are already some crazy custom versions, and BMW is actively encouraging them. I think you guys are biased in favor of vertical vibration and against horizontal vibrations. It's a boxer thing.
An owner here, yeah in my late 30s and with a desk job ;) Here in Europe nobody actually thinks that this would take any of the market share from HD in the US. That's nonsense ... this is bike you are growing into within the brand. In other words, many of those will end up parked next to the GS and/or S1000RR and/or BMW M whatever ;) For me it reminds me the old BMW bikes from 30's, 40's and 50's ... real nostalgia and heritage, always loved them. Not transferable experience over the seas though.
Also a european here (Belgium) and i would consider selling my ’04 road king for this one (alltough...😉). I love the look of this motorcycle, especially the engine, it really looks like the old models... looking forward to the test ride. 😎
HD is dying over here Martin. Most of their customer base is a stone throw's away from an assisted living facility, and the younger riders are douchy guys like the ones in this video who only ride crotch rockets and engage in shenanigans. They are typically not attracted to bikes like Harleys. It is interesting to see where the bike market will go.
@@peterhenauw6604 shit also belgian here how long did it take for a license and is the insurance doable for a cruiser type motorcycle like the Honda shadow 750 for example ?
this bike is a piece of art man, favourite part is how they designed the engine, for the average person, a shiny enclosed thing, with 2 shiny enclosed pistons sticking out the side, with a long shiny exhaust leading straight out the back, god its absolutely beautiful.
So was Dummes kann nur von einem Amerikaner kommen der keine Ahnung von Deutscher Technik hat . Die Amerikaner haben ihre Technik von den Deutschen kopiert.
The first ones shipped to America lacked it, but you CAN get an R18 with cruise Control. Mine has it. And they all have a digital tachometer at the bottom of the speedo. They also say it's got a 3.9 gallon gas tank, but it's a bit bigger at 4.2 gallons. That seat is hard, but they sell a series of MUCH better seats in the accessories catalog. Yeah, it's extra money, but my "Weekender" is super comfy.
I have a '76 R90/6. Each of the cylinders on your bike equal the entire displacement of mine. I've always loved the sound of the boxer twin, especially when cruising. And torque? It pulls like a tractor. No, it won't rev high, and no, it's not fast. But it's cool.
had one. Loved it. Mine had cruise and bags and a windscreen. Only sold it because my wife didn't love riding pillion on it. And I didn't love the lack of a fuel gauge.
BMW makes some great bikes. My impression watching this video is that this is not one of them, at least for the American Cruiser and Touring Market. I do not think that Harley, Indian, or even us older Victory riders need worry that we are missing the boat with this BMW. Many younger riders look for more comfortable rides with decent handling as they get a little older. At 66 years old and a 6'5" 280 lb frame, my Victory Vision Premium Tour will take me where I want to go, whether near or far with comfort and panache and with a 39 degree lean angle handles the Twisties with ease. Keep up the good work and thanks for remembering us big bike riders in your reviews.
Just bought the First Edition (windscreen, cruise control, driving lights, round pipes, reverse, soft saddlebags, etc.) for $15,950 on sale. Only one word describes these bikes: incredible. It's a whole different animal than my Aprilia 500 scooter, but well worth the learning curve.
I'm not sure I would ever buy this bike, but good god I'm glad it exists 😍. I mean I own an RT with a 1200 boxer and get like not shake at all but this just seems like one of those bike that would make you smile the whole trip
Please please please ride a 2020+ Harley Davidson Low Rider S. I'm interested to see what the team thinks compared to some of the cruisers you have ridden recently.
I feel like he wouldn't appreciate it. The Rocket III is my favorite Triumph motorcycle. It's so amazing. Because it's the best concept ever, having a super under stressed engine that should last 400,000 miles.
I just saw one in person when I picked up my Z900RS Cafe this past weekend. That thing is ridiculous. It makes a Goldwing/Valkyrie engine look little width wise.
While I love my R18 classic, I also love that Z900RS much like the old Z1900s. The burgundy/brown or the green with yellow pin stripes are gorgeous. I’m jealous.
You can get the R18 classic with a windscreen, luggage, and cruise and demo models can be found cheap as 15K. And yeah you can get a touring seat from BMW accessory catalog. Also they do make leg rests that go over the top of the heads so you can stretch out your legs. 😊
First time viewer. Really enjoyed your banter and most of your insights were right on. I live in Colorado Springs now, but hail from Austin. The Pennybacker bridge and ride along Hwy 360 were nostalia inducing. Been a Harley rider for years. Thought I would keep my 2009 CVO Dyna Fat Bob the rest of my life, but helping my son buy a bike, I rode my first BMW, an R1200R. Because of its superior engineering it only took a few miles to get me interested in the brand. Then, I found a deal on an 2023 R 18 100 Year Anniversary Edition-an absolute work of art. Most elegant looks and certainly the most character of any bike I've ever been on. BMW is in my garage. Harley is up for sale. : )
It,s not my cup of tea. But is surely does look good. It has a good classic fibe. I normally don't like boxer engines on motorcycles, but this engine is a looker
Best thing about keyless cars and bikes is that it helps stop people stealing the keys, as in while driving or riding, its a lost harder to reach into your pocket rather than reach over to the dash, Might not be a big deal in the USA, but its always been something in the back of my mind.
It really seems to me that BMW has the concept to sell a great bike and offers immediately the customising options. I have an R nine T, love it since the first view ( saying this as a yammi boy before ), but since It's bought there is a constant search for some new things to buy on the bike. Sure, lower budget bikers ask for more, but it is a BMW, German Engineering. Last word, it a boxer so you better know what you ask for. Live your channel. Greetings from Europe
It is a "boxer" engine, the vibration is NOT caused by the "sideways" motion of the pistons, as they are canceled out, it is caused because one piston ahead of the other because it is has 180º crank with a main bearing between the two rod throws, looking down, the unbalance" would appear as a clockwise, counter-clockwise motion as the power strokes are 360º apart.
Excepting radials, all aircraft engines are 'boxers'. They are the best of engines in every regard (simplicity, efficiency, weight, reliability, cooling, vibrations) excepting high RPMs, which is not necessary with horizontal opposed torque. The BMW logo is actually a propeller against the sky. BMW began life as an aircraft mfg.
This is definitely a bike for show over go. The R18 is stunningly gorgeous, but at the end of the day I am not interested in museum pieces so much. Now do the Rocket 3.
I just liked coming back to this video after the release of the R 18 B being out a few years. And the big reason why HD owners are saying they dislike it...ironically..the vibration. I have mine and I knew it when I felt it jerk to the left when I started it
Y'all should do a Harley Davidson V-Rod now that is a different Harley! And sound's so good with even stock exhaust. As an owner of these I would vouch for it.
It is one beautiful looking machine. I own a BMW (2004) R 1200 CLC and enjoyed it now for quite some time. I know just what you mean about that side to side motion. At speed you really don't feel it much on the R 1200. Nice review!
I just rented one yesterday. It’s a cool bike. Great torque, sounds great, but not for me. The torquing left when you rev it at idle was cool, but not practical. I also didn’t like how my feet were wedged between the cylinders and shifter/brake pedal. Also, if I’m gonna ride a cruiser, I’d prefer my feet to be placed farther forward to stretch my legs.
Now we road test a REAL bike! It's stupendous! It's awesome! It's the greatest thing since tits! Rolls out what looks like a Harley, Polaris Indian, and BMW all collided, stuck together, and someone rode away on the results. Especially the model with the batwing fairing and bags. I appreciate ALL motorcycles, but quit putting Harley and Indian down, then oohing and ahhing over style and design cues "borrowed" from them. As a rider, owner, and customizer of many different types of machines over the past 40 years, I can say that BMW produces some of the finest machines.
Had the chance to tryout this one on the road and also the other two versions namely the bagger and the transcontinental and I must say i'm completely sold! BMW did a great job assembling these and it's been the coolest rides of my life so far hands down! The only con that I could possibly spot is the price, hell it's costlier than my car!!
BMW offer a couple (necessary I mean, the sheer number of actual available options are beyond anything I've ever seen on any other bike from any manufacturer) of options that really transform the R18 back into an old R50 or R60 or even earlier in their model lineup.... first is their Bobber Seat and Plate kit, second would be their Beach Bars, lastly would be their upper fork covers.... throw those 3 options on, and the bike really gets teleported back into the 40s and 50s..... I mean, it's pretty perfect the way it is, but why not make it gorgeous 👌
Yummy, thanks for teaching me a lot about bikes since I found your channel about a month ago. Ive been looking at my first bike. And I found you. I can say I went out a purchased a ninja 650 based on all the stuff I've learned from you. Thank you very much!
Love the bike. I own a BMW R9T. Curious though how they are selling. Seem to always be the only model available at my dealer which tells me they are not moving.
I own a r nine t and obviusley its a smaller engine but the start up you feel that "punchy" start it is a very diffrent feeling. I'm 20 and i want the r18 because i have done 14 hour rides on the r nine t I wanna try with the r18.
I wouldn’t mind a keyless bike, I would no longer be fumbling through multiple jacket pockets wondering where the hell I put the darn key just to realize that I forgot to take it out of the ignition when we stopped for lunch.
Thanks to Euro Cycle for sending this bad boy to me! Not my usual cup of tea, but it’s still got two wheels and an engine so we’ll enjoy 🔥

Love that bike. The only similarity to a HD is that they’re both cruisers.
And the average age of buyers 60+
When it turns on, it looks like you startled it from a mid-Masters Tournament nap.
Definitely a rolling work of art.
After doing the Honda Rebel you've just got to try runing that BMW with open pipes.
It's a bmw, the ecu will probably freeze up lmfao
I'm crazy about the fact that you can hear the vibration in Spite's voice
this bike is a piece of art man, favourite part is how they designed the engine, for the average person, a shiny enclosed thing, with 2 shiny enclosed pistons sticking out the side, with a long shiny exhaust leading straight out the back, god its absolutely beautiful.
My dream bike... And I'm only 25 haha. Completely stunning!
I've always wondered about these. Do you have a kickstand, or does it just lean on it's own engine?
We just park it on top of your crotch rocket. Accelerate the crashing experience for you.
Also this review is super cool with both of you riding together talking to each other about the bike. I dig that!
I have a '76 R90/6. Each of the cylinders on your bike equal the entire displacement of mine. I've always loved the sound of the boxer twin, especially when cruising. And torque? It pulls like a tractor. No, it won't rev high, and no, it's not fast. But it's cool.
Auch ich fahre eine 90/6 und das mit Leidenschaft.
had one. Loved it. Mine had cruise and bags and a windscreen. Only sold it because my wife didn't love riding pillion on it. And I didn't love the lack of a fuel gauge.
The R18 is big-until you get on any model of Victory. Glad to see Yammie giving some regard for a bike with less than 150hp.
I swear the more I watch you two the older I feel, and I'm not even out of my 30's yet lol
I would love to see it in a red baron theme.
Luftwaffe Livery 😳
@@nathank6468 SS LIVERY 😵
Just bought the First Edition (windscreen, cruise control, driving lights, round pipes, reverse, soft saddlebags, etc.) for $15,950 on sale. Only one word describes these bikes: incredible. It's a whole different animal than my Aprilia 500 scooter, but well worth the learning curve.
I'm test driving an R18 Classic today. They shop is letting me take it out for a highway ride. Sounds like she is laid out just like yours.
So yams, the tried and true triumph boi, how about we see you on a Triumph Rocket III? 🤔😉
I feel like he wouldn't appreciate it. The Rocket III is my favorite Triumph motorcycle. It's so amazing. Because it's the best concept ever, having a super under stressed engine that should last 400,000 miles.
I’ve ridden a new one - they’re fucking rad
@@Ritalie I'm considering the new Rocket III. In your opinion, which trim level is more comfortable to ride around town?
You had me at "rock n roll modes"
I just saw one in person when I picked up my Z900RS Cafe this past weekend. That thing is ridiculous. It makes a Goldwing/Valkyrie engine look little width wise.
Did you buy in Katy, TX by any chance? They have a couple here and last week they posted a guy just bought a café Z900
@@bodyguard1191 , Mancuso SW in Houston.
While I love my R18 classic, I also love that Z900RS much like the old Z1900s. The burgundy/brown or the green with yellow pin stripes are gorgeous. I’m jealous.
Woah.... That is like freaking beautiful architecture. Absolutely gorgeous.
You can get the R18 classic with a windscreen, luggage, and cruise and demo models can be found cheap as 15K. And yeah you can get a touring seat from BMW accessory catalog. Also they do make leg rests that go over the top of the heads so you can stretch out your legs. 😊
Just got given one as a loaner bike until my S1000RR turns and its not what I expected, way more enjoyable to ride then I thought.
I always loved the R5. While this is a little bit too much, I still love that they paid hommage to a legend
My r1100R boxer was a ripper. super torquey and fast AF. Also fantastic on long trips.
Gorgeous motorcycle. Thank you gents. Classic model looks sick!
This thing looks absolutely amazing, 23 years old I would LOVE one
Would love to see one in steampunk colours, copper and brass
If you buy the first edition trim package you get remakes of the copper BMW badges around the 1930s era. you can swap out.
I know what they are talking about with the way the engine torques to the side I ride a bmw boxer twin it smooths out really nice at 3k rpm
The more I look at it, the more it's growing on me. I think it's pretty cool. Some bags on the side would complete the look.
I think they do a more touring version that has bags and a shield on it.
@@kennyforgot83 Just looked at the site and saw it. I like the look of it. Like a classic Indian maybe?
@@OpeoAslam yes maybe more on the lines of an Indian like you say.
It,s not my cup of tea. But is surely does look good. It has a good classic fibe. I normally don't like boxer engines on motorcycles, but this engine is a looker
Not a euro guy, but the love that moesheen. I would almost get rid of my Pin for that.
I have the R18 first edition and I love it! Replaced the seat first off with a Corbin and it’s a dream. 6000 miles on it this summer in Alaska.
Please, make a mature knowledgeable review.
Soul is everything. The BMW R-sole.
20:57 GGo on the BMW website, you ACTUALLY can get forward pegs with legs over the engine, it's hilarious!
The shift cam with my 1250 reduces that “slapping” cylinders
Nope it's not, that's just because the engine is smaller and differently balanced
Shift ShiftCam is 2 different cam profiles just like vtec does
i actually love the way the r18 looks and i would not mind having one.
Next month I get mine. I'm 36 years old and I will listen to Marduk riding this!
BMW R 18 - the most beautiful bike ever!
🤩
I think this bike is an intended parody of a Harley, incl "rock and roll mode".
There must be a test by Whitney and Josh of this bike. Yes. Yes there must be.
Would love to see Whitney riding this!
It'll look like Bilbo was riding the Uruk-hai war wolfs of the Hobbit movies.
Definitely need to revisit this bike. What a great review you've done here.
This bike is just like a friggin Labrador when you say "walkies?". It starts to wiggle in pure, unbridled joy. Labrabike ftw. Lmao
Thank you very much!
that thing needs a matching sidecar, it would be the modern version of the old ww2 sidecar bike. oh and the MG42 mounted in the usual spot
What BMW created with the R18 is a perfect sidecar hauler -- although I don’t know that was their intent.
I could see that with a vintage looking sidecar.
Love the bike. I own a BMW R9T. Curious though how they are selling. Seem to always be the only model available at my dealer which tells me they are not moving.
We'll get you to the BMW side.
Just you wait....
The 'Big Boxer' ..Looks kinda cool, big engine, but I wouldn't trade it for my R1150RT. I like my space ship too much.
Hopefully this bike will give HD a reason to up their game. Competition benefits the consumer!
Want one with a black Ural side car!
you can hear the bike rocking back and forth in Spite's voice 🤣🤣🤣
I own a r nine t and obviusley its a smaller engine but the start up you feel that "punchy" start it is a very diffrent feeling. I'm 20 and i want the r18 because i have done 14 hour rides on the r nine t I wanna try with the r18.
I think with a full fairing and cruise control this bike could be a contender.
I think it's beautiful and the boxer makes it super unique, which is important in its segment. the lack of cruise control is a big bummer though.
Cruise control is an option, and most of the models for sale on the lot will have it.
@@LynxStarAuto cool, thanks
I have had Harley’s and 13 BMWs. I’d buy this when I get older but right now a GS 1250 is my jam. But you can’t stand up on it like a GS.
Hey, I know where you guys are. I like to go up through to Dripping Springs, the Marble Falls, the back 1432 -CP great ride.
I wouldn’t mind a keyless bike, I would no longer be fumbling through multiple jacket pockets wondering where the hell I put the darn key just to realize that I forgot to take it out of the ignition when we stopped for lunch.
