Thanks for joining me today in my 2023 garden! Spring has flown past and it is just about time to harvest broccoli and cabbage! The lettuces and greens are ready for a second planting and so are the carrots. The peas are just about to start flowering and the potatoes are exploding.
Today in the garden our main focus is beginning to plant the summer garden. Over all I will be planting corn, green beans, okra, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, summer squash and winter squash, sweet potatoes and more.
My focus today is on getting the green beans and corn into the ground as well beginning to add flowers to all of my garden beds. Flowers not only bring me a lot of joy in the garden, they also attract beneficial insects and deter problematic pests.
We are planting calendula, 3 different kinds of basil, lemon grass, cosmos, sunflowers, snap dragons, zinnias, marigolds, and much more!

Bri, your garden is beautiful and I love hearing the twins learning words! Little tip....you may want to put the cattle panel trellis on the inside of the tposts. The zip ties can pop, especially in the heat, and the panel will go flying! The tposts will keep it together, should the ties pop. Love from NC!

Plant corn in 10×10 blocks. Plant them diagonally for maximum coverage. They don't have wide roots or even tap roots, and they like being together not separate. It's sort of like grass in that way.
The 36" apart thing is for industrial commercial growers who need machinery space, which you don't need at home.

    • @Brifromscratch
      @Brifromscratch  Рік тому +6

This is how I have always planted my sweet corn. I just usually plant 1 row down the center. I will look into the closer spacing.

    •  Рік тому +7

@@Brifromscratch The main problems I've had with corn:
      - spaced too far apart: they can't exchange pollen, & wind action doesn't drop it into where the silk forms
      - remembering to fertilize: corn is a heavy feeder & loves to eat!
      - remembering to water: corn likes water, just like grass does.

He'd keep it weeded and when the corn had four leaves he would use a hoe to pull soil up around the corn plants. He said hilling the corn like that let the feeder roots get a better hold and kept the plants up-right in storms. Good Luck!

DEAR BRI, The Broccoli is looking do yummy. Just a note, my friend Teenie's parents were Mormon and One day I was pulling the bottom leaves off my Broccoli for my little hens. I decided to take a big bag to Teenie and her 4 hens. When I knocked and told her why I had come. She became so excited and told me that she would share some with her hens but that she would be saute the broccoli leaves in her iron skillet with onions, garlic, etc. I asked her to save me a taste and it was wonderful. I do not have a freeze dryer but dry some of the leaves in the oven to use for the Nutra Bullet smoothies. Please harvest some of the leaves and you will love it. Best wishes to you and yours from South Louisiana.

It was not uncommon for our family to have a mini-supper for the littles at a regular time (around 6:30pm) and then supper for the rest of the family around 8:30pm just due to the heat of summer. Of course, bedtimes got altered, too, so littles got to sleep in and the rest of us got more done in the mornings while the littles sleep. If your completed freeze dried food is cold, it probably finished and extra dry time if set had expired. Then it begins to refreeze so food isn’t ruined. So you’d need to press tray warmer. You can set your extra dry time-12 hours is what many recommend -This way you can stop and check it at anytime but it won’t refreeze if it completes when your busy, not home, or still sleeping!

Bre I’m very impressed w/ everything you’re doing while you raise your children. I was A single parent of three children for most of their lives and I love it that you didn’t have time to play as well as time to garden with you in time to help cook and I love how you saying Christian songs at the end of the video. If we have our Faith, we can get through anything. Teaching your children that at a young age is a wonderful thing. I’m very impressed with your positivity and I know that it’s not always perfect but you’re doing a marvelous job and I just want you to know this mother is cheering you on❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️to SUCESS!

Kale powder would be great added to healthy smoothies. We have raised boxes and still get weeds, I’ve learned from you to pull a few each time I’m 8n the garden to stay somewhat ahead of the battle. You are amazing. Prayers for an extra portion of strength and joy 💕

Its looking great, Bri! I think you can fit even more beans in there. I do square foot gardening in raised beds, and I plant my bush beans (I usually do yellow wax beans) equally spaced, nine per square foot. They do pretty well for me, though I'm in OR, zone 8b. I'm not sure if growing zone would make much difference for plant spacing. Since you're experimenting, you could plant out a section square foot style and see how it compares. If it works, you can fit quite a few more plants in the space you have.

The corn can be closer together, with attention to species, and some fertilizing
