to anyone curious in the position- in no way is working student a riding position, it is for hard work and helping off set expenses, a lot of times, when you get to ride other clients horses, it is 'privilege' only, or rarely will come off on monthly bill due to if you get paid for it, you can lose your amateur status and be considered a pro. 80% you will not be riding horses. the hardest work is at shows, when you go with the trainers and spend the week up in the toy hauler, your in charge of lunging clients horses, sometimes feeding, sometimes cleaning stalls, grooming, tacking up, knowing gate times, putting in studs, clipping, braiding, cleaning tack, and keeping your trainers and clients happy because it is the most stressful time for most of them. one major thing you are going to do is packing for horse shows. some shows you have 3 horses to pack for including feed, meds, blankets, water buckets, equipment etc. and sometimes you have 20 horses its just a matter of managing your time and priorities

This is all completely true, full client care at shows keeps you on your feet. Positive attitude all the time even on your worst days.

Gotta love this lifestyle, things have changed a lot in 30 years, hard work and dedication for sure, and I bet your trainer will let you do night checks and blanket all those horses every night including Xmas,New Years,Thanksgiving. Not judging just saying been groom for about 35 years, had to give it up no appreciation and hardly ever a bonus.Working students work like hell and usually get little in return.

Dena Fox working students do work incredibly hard, but if you find the right place (and this place definitely was) it’s definitely worth it. I was receiving 5* instruction, learned a lot about high level grooming, got opportunities I never would’ve gotten, and got to work with a ton of incredible horses. It’s a lifestyle you have to appreciate for sure, but if you’re working for the right people it’s more than worth it.

Loose pine shavings that are ordered by the truck load. A dumptruck's worth is unloaded into a pole barn to be shoveled into wheelbarrows
