yeah. it seemed like the Olympic teams of the '80's eventually produced World Champs. Whitaker, Holyfeild, Breeland, etc. in fact, Welterweights are what I remember most from the '80's. I'm glad you posted this because it showed how ridiculous boxing has become and why MMA has surpassed it as a combat sport. Very linear and easy to follow from the late 1800s through to the mid-70s when Leon Spinks defeated Muhammad Ali, and then Ali beat Spinks in the return match. Then the division mutated into something barely recognizable, and by the 2000s, it became completely unrecognizable to where I had to remind myself who half of these "champions" were.

He had speed that was unmatched and you could not hit him. His stamina and energy was other worldly and he could pick his opponent apart at will.

Peek-a-boo existed before Tyson I think. The earliest fight I've seen with peek-a-boo guard was in the 30's or something, it was Kid Chocolate Vs Tony Canzoneri. Sadly, only round 1 and 15 were recovered.

Holyfield won it 4 times but from different organizations different versions of the heavyweight title. So he didn’t lose and win it back 4 times. That’s why Ali is so unique. I'm glad you posted this because it showed how ridiculous boxing has become and why MMA has surpassed it as a combat sport. Very linear and easy to follow from the late 1800s through to the mid-70s when Leon Spinks defeated Muhammad Ali, and then Ali beat Spinks in the return match. Then the division mutated into something barely recognizable, and by the 2000s, it became completely unrecognizable to where I had to remind myself who half of these "champions" were.

He had speed that was unmatched and you could not hit him. His stamina and energy was other worldly and he could pick his opponent apart at will.

James Jeffries came out of retirement to box Jack Johnson (and lost). Jeffries was 35 years old (Johnson was 32) hadn't fought in 6 years, and had to lose 100 pounds to get back to his fighting weight. People were tougher back then.
