i liked so much this video man, keep it up, im happy to be able to see contnent creators like you, having fun and doing what makes u happy, greetings
Thank you so much, Arturo. It means a lot when someone let's you know that they enjoyed something that you shared. I really appreciate your support! I do love working on bikes and sharing my experiences.
Nicely done Duane. Perfectly budget build. Look forward to seeing the maiden voyage. ✌️
Thanks Mike! I'm coming off a fever that I got right after the build... I'll probably give her a spin this weekend.
@@DuanegerZone bummer. glad your feeling better though.
Thanks for sharing, no need to apologize for any of it.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the support.
I recently got a Poseidon X and it is honestly a great budget build.
I was just thinking about Poseidon X when I was building the Norton... seems like a pretty sweet gravel bike... did you get the dropbar or the flatbar?
@@DuanegerZonedrop bar. I just swapped the seatpost, seat, and handlebars for carbon fiber. Then some lighter tubes.
All in, easily under $1000 for a lot of fun.
@Aus10c Niiice!! You probably shaved some serious weight off... I've been wanting to try out some carbon bars... they're pretty pricey though... I've been thinking about putting a pair on my Tallboy.
Not gonna lie, I like that rear thru axle. My Trek XCaliber 8 2022 is still stuck with QR.
It's definitely a plus. Especially for a budget bike.
You have a very nice garage set up in there!
You can get a harbor freight 10k lumen led lights so that you can work nights
Thanks... it's a tiny one car garage that I organized to be MTB friendly and just barely fit my car... but my wife informed me that I'm not allowed to have any more bikes... 😬
I do love me some Harbor Freight 😁@sydmichael13
4:54 I reccomend using a compression plug. It's easy to install, no special tool needed, no hammering, it's reusable. So no need to buy more star nuts. So more economical in the long run.
Also safe on carbon steerer tube.
You can't use a star nut on carbon as it will ruin it.
But no issue with that on an alu and steel steerer.
I was looking at a compression plug by wolf tooth... I've never tried them out... Since this is a bike that i'm trying new stuff out on, I might pop out that starnut and give a compression plug a try. Thanks for the suggestion... I'm always up to try new components.
@@DuanegerZone i have Hope Head Doctor (play on words😝)
It works well, but the o ring comes off. But not nessesary for function it just ads friction so it does not fll out. But there are many options out there. I just got what I could get my hands ont he fastest in Norway at the time. I got Space Doctor too(spacers.)no issues with those.
@@DuanegerZone if you're interested in switching out the headset i bought a Bucklos headset for my Norton and it came with a star nut and a compression plug and the whole headset only cost $20.00 on Amazon, it's the IS 41.8/52 headset.
3:46 the welds look great by the head tube. 👌
Yeah... it's actually a pretty sweet frame... I'm really liking it.
@@DuanegerZone I see the bottom bracket was faced. That's great, I see ther eis a small imperfection, as the facing went trough the weld. So not a perfect circle. But it's faced so it's flush. So if threads ar even bb shell is aligned all should work flawlessly if proper bb has been installed. The trek bikes I owned did not have that. Nor do many bikes in higher price class from many big brands. This frame is one of the best low price class frames I've seen. Welds are well done, it's faced. The brake mount probably are faced too. Yet many big or well known brands skip this step o rmess it up.
10:21 The bell will likely not work if wet, I've never had a bell like this that worked int he rain, the droplets silences it so much it mutes it I only hear a tap. I reccomend Timber Bell, I have the v2 but there's a 4th verison now, it Sveen improved.
It's a robust bell, despite clamp being plastic it held up well, bell is loud, has on off switch, even has a medium ring setting. You switch it on and it rings as you ride due to the vibrations, turns, but you can switch it off. But turn it on for fast downhills to warn people. No need to ring the bell so it's safer.
This is the first time I've put a bell on a bike... I'll check out that Timber Bell... thanks for the heads up👍
This video has become my hub of info with my current build! With the rear hub (JGbike) you linked here, if I were to get a 32 hole Mavic rim, figuring out the spoke sizes is a bit confusing to me, and to buy a pre-built rim of this quality is SO expensive. Any tips on a good website or anything that can help me with the formula needed? Thank you so much for your help!😊
I actually went with 170 mm spokes on both sides... in retrospect, though, I think I should have gone with 169mm on the drive side and 170mm on the non drive side because the tire on the non drive side is almost rubbing the chainstay... I just went with the size that I had.
Sorry, but did you mean 270mm? I’m trying to do a sanity check with the calculations that I came up with.
@BowhunterUSA yup... sorry man... I always do that! 😬 270mm is what I used on both sides... I would recommend, with the JGBIKE hub to use 269mm on the drive side and 270mm on the non-drive though... but if (like me) you don't want to spring for 2 sizes, 270mm will work in a pinch... they just get a little close to the chainstay on the non drive side.
i just bought this exact Norton frame a few days ago in an XL. I currently have a GT Aggressor Pro which is the complete opposite of this frame, it's got dated geometry, a straight 69 degree headtube and it's QR, lol. I've put so much damn money into upgrading it that I decided it was finally time to get a modern frame for all the modern parts i have. I ended up having to buy a thru-axle rear wheel, a seat post (no dropper yet) a different headset becuase i need to use my straight steerer Rockshox Recon so i need the extra crown race to use it with the tapered headtube, and last but not least the 3mm offset chainring for my SRAM GX crankset since I was using the 6mm offset chainring. The frame arrives next week Monday and I'll be transferring everything over to it on Tuesday.
Awesome! You should film the build... I'd love to see it. I think you'll like this frame. It's nice to have the thru axle instead of the QR. The tapered head tube and modern geometry are definitely plusses when it comes to upgrading later.
@@DuanegerZone i'm so pissed right now. FedEx just delivered the frame, I unboxed it, and the top of the headtube is dented in, I can't insert the bearings. I called Poseidon and left a message and told them to please get back to me ASAP. I'm so heated and disappointed right now. I'm probably going to have to send the frame back, wait for them to get it, then wait for them to send another frame, it's probably gonna take a month for me to get the new frame now.
@NonLegitNation2 Damn... I'm sorry that happened... I know it's almost like Christmas morning waiting on bike parts (especially the frame!!!). I hope this gets taken care of asap. I understand they have good customer service.
@DuanegerZone yeah, I called them and they said to send some pics. I sent them and they emailed me back a half hour later said they submitted a order for a replacement frame So hopefully I'll have that by this time next week.
@@NonLegitNation2 Well, if they don't make you send back the other one, you can make a cool bike frame lamp! 😎
Awesome build! Can you please tell me the exact bottom bracket you used? I’m doing a build on the same frame and don’t want to make a mistake there.
I used a square tapered Shimano BB-UN300... it's good for a square tapered bottom bracket, but I would definitely recommend a hollow (hollowtech?) bottom bracket instead... but if you already have square tapered cranks and don't want to get a new set, this bottom bracket will work well for you.
Sidenote... I just picked up this crankset on Amazon:
www.amazon.com/dp/B09BMBN6VR/ref=cm_sw_r_apanp_hNFnureKVE5yi
I'm going to put this set on another build I'm doing... I have not put it to use yet, but it gets good reviews and would fit the Poseidon Norton just fine.... just a thought for a budget option if you don't already have a crankset... and when you get a whole crankset that includes the bottom bracket, you know the cranks are going to be compatible and you don't have to try and figure out if you need a 24mm spindle or a 30mm spindle on your cranks so they fit properly inside the bottom bracket....
... but then again, if you get a square tapered bottom bracket and you have square tapered cranks you know they're going to work with each other.
Thank you! I don’t currently have one so I will probably go with the set that you posted, like you said, less risk if you get the whole crank set as one unit. This will be my first build, so I really appreciate the help!
@BowhunterUSA It's a great bike for a first build... Careful though... Building bikes can be addictive! 😆
Nice Job! Do you think someone who is 6'4" would fit on this bike in xl size?
I would definitely think XL would be the way to go for your height.
I'm tempted to get the large due to the higher stack and reach numbers
Medium is out of stock in black
I feel like I could have went large on this one with no problems (I'm 5'10)... I set it up as a 27.5 ( which is how they intended it)... I have a large 2019 Evil the Wreckoning that fits me just fine for the most part... and it's a 29er... so I really feel I could do the Norton as a large if I had to.
@@DuanegerZone 5ft 7 here, but I ride large 27.5 and 26x4.0 no issues
Now a 22in XL 26er I got no clearance 😆
Very cool brother I own 3 posiden bikes.
Nice! I love this one... which bikes do you have? Which one do you like the best?
@DuanegerZone 2 posiden x large , new posiden ambition medium. One large has shimano road bike gears. That's my travel bike , I commute over 100 mi a week on it. The other large has stock gears . The ambition is 3 wks old . Still brand new. I like the medium. I've put over 10k on both the large. Getting ready to go through them all with wheels. I'm over the heavy ass wheels. I've crashed the hell out them . Tortured them and still keep going. My favorite bike is my Cannondale, it's a rocket ship.
@@treyhorn5645 100 miles a week... Nice! I wish I was putting in that many miles.
Fun build. The frame is $300 right now. I am curious how much more you think you put into the build. The Amazon links don't cover everything that you used, otherwise I would have done the math using the links. I think the fork and rims are the biggest costs that got left out.
Thanks for letting me know that I forgot the links for the fork and rear rim in the description. I thought I included them already... I've added them now (I mentioned in the build video that I got the whole front wheel for $60 at a bike shop). It looks like the fork went down by $30 since I purchased it (I paid $159.00, it's now $129.00) and I got the rear rim for $29.99 from Cambria Bike (it's now selling for $41.97). I buy all my spokes for between $12 and $18 (36 piece packs) and, honestly, after beating the hell out of these cheap spokes for years on different bikes (and never having a single problem) I will never pay for "premium brand" spokes again. A lot of the pieces I put on this build, I already had in my parts bins, but I tried to include the links, so anyone can find them... If I missed anything else and you would like to know the price (or link), just let me know. Thanks for watching!
Just ordered this frame for the same reason you did, to throw spare parts on it. How do you like it so far, have you ridden it yet? Also, did they really ship it in a TV box? Lol
🤣 Yes! They did send it in a TV box... I've only ridden it around the neighborhood to tweak it a little bit... Right after the build, I got super sick.
So i'm taking it easy.... But it was riding great on the little trip around the block... I'm hoping I'll recover
fully by this weekend so I can take it on a proper ride. The matte black frame looks beautiful and feels super comfortable with all the components that I used... And I gotta admit those Zoom brakes feel pretty damn good for a $70 pair of brakes.
@@DuanegerZone I originally ordered the green frame, but after watching your vid, I emailed Poseidon to switch the frame color to black! The frame was on sale, and at that price point, it’s the perfect spare part beater bike!
@@cassysamel3914 my thoughts exactly... a fun project, as well.
@@cassysamel3914 how much did you pay for the frame on sale? I paid $299 for mine a few days ago.
Did you have to press the headset bearings in or they just sit in the frame on their own?
I think they really should just fit in... but I couldn't get my bearings in to save my life... so I did use a headset bearing press. Not sure if that will be the case with every bike, though... really, they just needed a little bit of help to get in, and I wanted to get them in evenly... so if anyone else runs into this issue, a headset press would come in handy.
@@DuanegerZone dang, I hope mine just drop in if I get one, don’t have a press
@lukas-a9234 I really think it should... it might feel tight, but you should be able to get it in... as soon as I felt resistance, I just decided to make use of my bearing press... but I probably could have done without.
3:40 many will hate the integrated headset. As loose headset can ruin the headtube. An dif tolerances are bad it will wiggle if headset is a bit loose, it will make it even worse. I'm not a fan of it. I don't know why they went for it, maybe simplicity, being user friendly to work on.
But the tolerances judging by the video look decent, not super tight, nor so much slack you can wiggle th bearing in all directions. A good sign.
Yeah it seems pretty good... I always get a little anxiety with getting everything just right within the headset.
About production quality, well filmed. But the audio has microphone popping, this is usually caused due to mouth being too close to the mic, try to place it on the side and further away. If still hopeless, try a pop filter.
Good advice... My mic was actually my phone, that I had a recording app on.... I'm sure I probably had it too close.
@@DuanegerZone I got Rode Podmic cheap and great audio. . Got it on a PSA1+arm AI-1 audio interface. So no interference from actually sound like my self, not nervous, drunk. Audio level stays the same, static noise So I get better audio than a phone can record. Much wider Hz range. Another benefit of an interface is I can turn up the volume higher than max level windows allows, so those super quiet videos can actually be listened to. No often I need to watch an absurdly quiet vid, but nice. My previous setup was Modmic5 connector to front panel of pc, I never got stable and constant good audio, never great. Despite reviewers doing just that. They probably used a audio interface. Then it actually sounds decent constantly.
Rode Podmic USB is pricier, I don't need to, but for those that want to record directly to lap top, phone without an audio interface it's nice. I got the much cheaper version without USB, and got it on sale. The audio interface was one somone tested and returned so was also cheaper.
@@mtbboy1993 I'll have to check that out... I'm not very "techy"... obviously... but I would love to "up" the quality of my videos... thanks for the recommendation ( I need all the help I can get).
@@DuanegerZone ai-1 is the cehapes interface I've found. But pricer exist, so if you want to record a guitar, voice and other people too it gets pricier. I only needed to record my self.
But you can connect it to the phone too if you want allowing you to record studio quality audio to your phone as the interface handles that not the phone. Rode has an app but don't have to use an interface to use the app, can use any mic or just the phone.
@@DuanegerZone Podmic is one of the cheapest options from a high-end brand, it's mad ein Australia and can probably take major abuse, the mic body is thick metal, robust metal mesh too. It's a common podcasting mic. I see many use this mic now, instead of a mic that cost 4 times as much or more like the Shure SM7B. And that one has a cable so I was out off by that anyway.
Whats your height and frame size? Im 5' 8" and thinking about medium but not positive
I'm 5'10 and it's a medium frame... I think medium would work for you too.
@DuanegerZone thank you for the input. Thats what I was leaning towards.
@k_sae1676 No problem... I think you'll really like the bike. It's a great frame, and if you're buying a complete bike, it's got an awesome drivetrain (I built mine up with the same Microshift Advent X as Poseidon's build) and it's easily upgradable with modern components.
