I’ve reached out to MANY guys selling their SRT but most are either rude and don’t like me asking a ton of questions (makes sense considering all of them are 4+ hours away, I’m in VA) and this fella I’m talking to now is very open about his car and seems to know it but he hasn’t touched the trans. Sorry that dude ripped you off but there are good folks in the community. Don’t lose hope!
this just happened to me as well. bought what i thought was a srt4. when i pull the vin its reg'd as and neon r/t. but has all the srt goodies minus the wing. also has a bws turbo, CAI, aftermarket downpipe. needs a power steering pump, possibly engine mounts. definetely a clutch fork as the clutch isnt fully disengaging. sucks ppl can be honest anymore
Easy fix. You can find a used 50 trim kit for less than 1200. I wouldn't be doing pulls on an eBay turbo. You can see if it has aftermarket cams by looking for adjustable cam gears. Also, since it's tuned for that eBay turbo I hope you have the tuner or else you gotta spend some money on the tuner and unmarrying the ecu
"Easy fix" and $1,200 doesn't go together on my book 😂 but yea I'm hoping my tuner will have some sympathy for me once I get the new setup. It may be a while. It does have cam gears. The mechanic told me it definitely has Cams, just wondering if the springs and retainers were done.
I once sold a car to a guy who took credit for the complete build. A lot people who knew that car knew that i brought home a disaster of a project. He did get called for his unfounded version and realized he was wrong. I should have never sold that car because it turned out so nice. Not I have a nice baby turbo 05' PT Cruiser convert. At least the family who sold me the PT were upfront and honest with all the work that had been done and the work it still needs. Which gave me a budget to work with. Your SRT4 is one of my favorite cars on U-tube.
Yea that blows,and a big reason why I dont have any interest in anyone elses project, if it isnt stock I wont give a car a second look.Then I dont have to worry about what they really did,and were there shortcuts taken etc.But like u said ,overall it's a clean car but a little more of a project than what u expected u were buying
Yea, for the most part. Then you have the people that "put it back to stock" before they sell it. You'd have to look real closely to find out if they really did.
Depends on if you want one modded or not. I knew I should've went stock and just built up, but even being as precautious as possible, there's still the chance of getting screwed. I'd look for wires being cut/taped around the wiring harness, map/tip sensors. Make sure it runs good. Check shifting in to 3rd gear, they are known to go bad. Make sure it doesn't pop out of the gear whole decelerating. Get a compression check done if you can.
Engine/trubo If it doesn't have a stock turbo I would do a compression test for sure, if stock turbo check to see if the heat shield is gone if so well it probably had a big turbo at one point. Check to see if map/tip/injector/ wires have been cut or modified. Oh yea.. .did i mention compression test lol its must
I see your comment was from 1 yr ago, but 10+ yrs on, the greatest car I ever owned was a Skittle, buuuuut... I’m still in the market and this may help: what the others said & I’d (personally) plan on a $1k teardown to be sure the critical bits are in the right place. This is before you even buy it. That’s a lot of $ to “shop around”, so I’d only even partially suggest this if you’re legit (that’s up to you) aaaaand if you wanna make sure the car is legit (only the seller really knows). I had similar but mine had all new parts and brand name. Story was a popped head gasket cuz he plumbed turbo wrong and did a pull and it ate ALL the boost. Get it home and blown motor and then you start to see the gremlins and short cuts. I will never buy anyone's project again cuz ppl just can't be real. Besides after you go over every nut and bolt etc you might as well built it yourself. Great vids and I too have a kitty killer finally. Best feeling when the shame comes across their face 🤣🤣
What was wrong with it when you bought it besides the eBay parts? Check engine light? If so, what codes? I bought mine from a guy just like you, he lied and when I drove it off home check engine light comes on for p1187 code. I texted him and asked him about it and he replied “oh that never happened to me”. Now that light is on, it’s for map sensor I replaced it and it’s still on .. don’t know why at this point, any suggestions?

I know this is a year old, but you can tell if it's cammed just by the idle sound... It might be a bit hard to tell if it's "stage 1" cams, but Crower's "Stage 2" cams have quite a bit of overlap, so you can definitely tell it's cammed by the idle lope..., Unless the timing is so far advanced that it smoothes out the idle. But it probably would take so much timing to do so that it more than likely wouldn't run...

While I personally do buy used autos, I grew up with my father’s mantra of “don’t buy someone else’s problem”. He wasn’t wrong: besides a vid like this, I bailed on my 03 SRT4 bc it became more trouble than it was worth. Now, in my defense, Quik’s point is valid: I wasn’t dishonest: I told the Pontiac dealership the problems I was having & the codes I was throwing: cam gear out of alignment or some such minor issue 😂 & personally worked with 2 different buyers on what DCR told me to try to tame the timing. Anyway, now it’s 10+ yrs later and that G8 GXP was a poor replacement for my Neon... I still miss the crank-down back windows of that tiny Mopar. Weird how life is sometimes, yanno? 😛

Hell, I don't think you're completely shit out of luck with it. It's a super clean car, has all gears, runs pretty good for a fleabay turbo, and the interior looks mint. Overall, seems like one hell of a strong foundation. Sucks he lied, but jokes on him, I'd say you ended up with a cleaner car.

Almost the complete opposite of this happenrd to me I bought one for three grand in Nashville Tennessee looked like a shitbox on the exterior had Raceland coilovers which I didn't like but the engine had quality good parts like an AGP kit HKS blow off turbo valve bunch of Turbonetics, forged internals sone DCR Heavy Duty clutch now I just got to get this body work right got to make it look like yours and in the long run we'll probably end up spending the same money it's all relative man the s*** is freaking fast though and even though I haven't got toinstall all the parts I bought I've done a few rips in it. PS I hate half ass wiring too looks crappy and it's dangerous

Definitely lied about the hp too, not trying to sound cocky or sound like an asshole but mine makes 401whp and pulls so much harder. Those Chinese turbos don’t spoil until about 5000rpm
Oh yea I can definitely tell. It's prolly mid 300's right now. And the 500 hp was a bit click baity on my part haha. Need some headwork and e85 before I get close. Well, now, a new turbo, downpipe, exhaust Manifold...😂
quiXilver09 I get you lol I’m running stock bottom end, Precision 5831 , log turbo manifold, balance chained removed, 1000cc injectors, act stage 3 clutch, aem wideband, boomba fuel rail and quite a few other things like the catch can I have a few videos up on Instagram, car pulls real nicely. Gt500 won’t touch it.
Mine makes just under 500 on 91 pump gas. It's on full bolt ons and a Garrett 50 trim turbo with supporting fuel mods such as 1000cc injectors and a walboro 250 fuel pump.
I did state at the beginning of the video that it wasn't the end of the world, it just sucks to get lied to. I also did have input. Couple educated friends and it was being worked on by a well known srt4 mechanic. It all seemed too good to be true.
Never buy a modded used srt4, ever. They're one of the most beat cars on the market and everyone lies about whats done to em. Hold out and find a lower mile all stock with original papers.
He probably sell it to you and bought another one more cheaper to save some money but still a good buy the srt4 is very clean

Looks like that's for the oil temp sensor. It's located below the turbo on the block. Try replacing that.

Never buy a modded used srt4, ever. They're one of the most beat cars on the market and everyone lies about whats done to em. Hold out and find a lower mile all stock with original papers.
I knew that, but the overall condition and low miles sold me on this one. It's all better now if you see my new videos.
