It does have a hidden meaning. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. He basically sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. It is also an ode to Europe. The dance-break is (Dutch) happy hardcore - which was invented in the Netherlands also called Gabber. And yes it is already in the clubs.

What a wonderful response. The whole clip is so Dutch. The landscape, the mill and the gabbers.
We say Papa to our father.
    Euro daddy
And the euro is the currency we pay with, hence the money gesture in the dance.
At Joost's early age, both parents died within a year.
Hardstyle is a typical Dutch music style, a subculture, the clothing, hair and dancing (heels) originated in the Netherlands and is called gabber.
I hope I have explained it clearly and well.
    Thanks for this beautiful video.
Greetings from the Netherlands from Sanne

Another reactionvideo going through all the emotions. I am dutch and watched many now. Every single time happy faces going sad in the end. This is a very well crafted piece of art and I already see in the comments below dutchies explaining the deeper layers and meaning of this song. Before this video Joost Klein actually still was climbing from the underground scene. He was a rising star for sure. But now..wow..❤

This is fabulous, I gave up on the UVSC 3 years ago but Joost makes me want to watch it again. This work of art has it all, it makes you laugh, it makes you wanna move to the groove, and it is a great message, so many typical Dutch referrals / hidden gems, it gives me Chickenskin (Goosebumps) and it made me cry. I have found out how great Joost is because of this piece of art, I did not even know about him before he was on the Avondshow with Arjen Lubach not so long ago. My initial 1st impression was ""what a nutter"", but that soon changed finding out his backstory and hearing this art for the 1st time. Now I am backtracing his artwork and am amazed at how great of an artist he actually is, and me being no spring chicken anymore at 58 and counting he achieved to impress me, and I'm not easily impressed. Joost is a revelation, wow!!
Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was a teenager +/- 13 years old, and his mother died from a heart attack a year later.
""Those who laugh the brightest most always have the heaviest loads they carry around, where ever they travel that backpack of experiences is always there, they can't escape from that, be as free a spirit as you can be, respect your elders, don't waste your time, and an ode to his dad credo""borders are stupid"", and Ubuntu(*)""
This sums up Europapa (papa is Dutch for Daddy) for me, it is true Art and a masterpiece by Joost (Joast) Klein (kline).
(*) Ubuntu (Xhosa(a South African tribe language) for "we are all as one"") is the most prolific, important, eye-opening, life-changing word I have learned in my 58 years of being an earthling.
Ubuntu to you, fellow earthling :)
Btw Klein means small in Dutch.
    Joost Klein, dream big

This is really the 90th with happy hardcore and gabberpop; my beautiful childhood and how special it is that Joost, who was born in 1997, brings this style back into our lives.
What an artist and a performer.🙏 Truly the best of the Netherlands ever. This song is with happiness and sadness combined, that releases all kinds of different feelings in a human body.Terrific beat, terrific feelings, thank you Joost.🙏🙏🙏
This is what music is about.
If this isn't going to win, than I don't know it anymore and we'd better abolish the entire Eurovision Song Contest.

This is actually an ode to 90s era Dutch music, as you might know Netherlands is the home of EDM and Dutch House and Hardcore .. During the 90s this music style became the biggest one and was called Happy Hardcore. The DJ that produced this is one of the legends from that time DJ Paul Elstak. The song is also an ode to his papa (dutch for Father) whom he lost at the age of 12 and they always watched Eurovision together - he lost his mum a year later and grew up parentless so this song is kinda a personal ode to his father and parents.

I really like his song ‘wachtmuziek’ where he sings partly about the fact he and so many young people have to wait a long time to get mental help in the Netherlands. Being on the waiting list, and that is why it is called waiting music.
Cool video as well, and even though not knowing Dutch probably makes it harder to understand it is mostly very fast rap with a nice and funny beat. Also some great videos of his performances on big stages at festivals. Lowlands being one of them.
Friesenjung is a song that made him famous in Germany and other German speaking countries.

The song sounds funny and silly but has a deeper meaning. It is about his father, who passed away when he was only 12, telling him that the world has no limits, only humans do. At one point he sings 'I am running from myself, asking all the time for help. I even pay people money but no one helps me.'.
With this song he wants to move forward, burning the past that was holding him back. Great song in every way. Mark my words...Malmö won't know what hit them in May❤❤❤ #proudtobeDutch 🇳🇱🇳🇱

It’s so Dutch we invented happy hardcore in the nineties and than the mill and inviroment it’s really Dutch , his parents died , first his dad when Joost was 12 years old, than a year later his mom , he used to watch Eurovision with his parents , telling his dad , I will be on that Eurovision stage once , so he did it , in the song you hear him saying that he has a lot of pain , even the music is happy and the end tells us that he must go on , not hanging in grieve and pain but find his way in the world and be happy, Joost is 26 years old, was a UA-camr as a kid, wrote poems when he was younger, has more music on you tube like Florida or Friesenkind , famous in Belgium , Germany , and now also in the Netherlands

End is about his dad that died .
End of the the song he says .. :
On the end of the day .
    We are all people .
My dad sayd it's a world without borders .
I miss you every day that's what i secretly whisper .
See you dad i have listened to you .

Little bit of background on Joost. He was creative from a very young age and also a bit different. His father (papa) said that there are no boundaries and he should follow his dreams. They always watched the Eurovision (Euro) Songfestival together so as a kid he replied that his dream would be to go to the Eurovision Songfestival. Then his dad passed away when he was 12 and his mother when he was 13. For inspiration and acceptance of the loss of his parents he travelled trough Europe. Therefore he sings that the pain and emptiness stayed with him no matter where he went. He paid for mental help but it did not work for him. Still he managed to be a very positive and joyful person as reflected in this song. He sings about the song Papaoutai from Stromae that is also about missing his father. In all of this he managed to combine lot's of cultural aspects of different European countries and the Netherlands. There is even a reference to Max Verstappen. Without the layer of his personal life you will notice that a lot of elements can directly be related to the European countries. The young boy and the old man training with weights represent him and his father struggling trough life and his father being an example for him. The windmill is near where he spend his youth so also a trip trough memory lane to him. The final emotional scene represents him as a kid and his father when it all ended, the burning of the family photo and the building represents that you need to move on in life and not be stuck in the past. In the end he tells that he listened to his father (there are no borders for your dreams) and refers to him going to the Eurovision Songfestival. So winning would be optional, his goal was participation. And "Europapa" is short for Eurovision Song contest and papa (dad). There are layers all trough the song and the video clip.

who created the beat: the composer is DJ Paul Elstak, who is dubbed the true godfather of hardcore. Hardcore was a very popular music genre in the Netherlands in the 90s (among youth- not so much among parents 😂). That is where the music genre happy hardcore came from (lighter and more fun) which is what this is.

A large part of the song is about his dad. And also about Europe and how we are one, without borders.
He can go anywhere he wants and do what he wants in life. He learned that from his dad.
The music though, is absolutely completely dutch. HAKKUUHHH!

Lots of world famous DJ's are from here, or are inspired by the Dutch scene... the " headbanger" music is called gabber house and is originated in the 90's. He's a mix of Papaoutai by stromae (also Fils de Joie by Stromae, he's using certain body gestures from stromae's videoclip, which is about Stromae's mom. This one is about/for Joost Klein's parents, especially his dad) he also gives off huge Oliver Tree - Miss You vibes with his dance and big coat and silly hair) I think Joost mixed all sorts of great musical names into one video. Gabber happy hardcore from the 90s as an added bonus, our Dutch pride and joy. It's a banger.

Papa or pa also means dad in Dutch. In the 90's this kind of music was the bom. It is called Happy Hardcore (sub genre of Hardcore). There was a whole sub culture born from it in the Netherlands (Rotterdam) called Gabber (buddy, mate). People shave their heads, wear sporting clothes and danced to it called Hakkuh (kicking the leg on the beat, left, right, left, right). Today its more of a nostalgia thing.

This guy is doing something special, gotta say. I do not particularly like this type of music, nor did I know of him. But, he is mixing all the smart stuff in this song: 80's-90's Dutch gabberhouse, happy tune, uniting stuff from Europe's countries, reflecting his joy, but also his reflections (on his parents. Funny thing is, even with videos without the English translation, every UA-camr reacting, I mean everyone, gets the gist of the message in the end and is touched (yeah I have seen a couple by now, as I found it interesting apart from me being Dutch, looking for a few more accolades for us :) ). Also you will find he is kind of famous, not particularly big, but he's got some of the more successful artists working with him in this clip and overall song.

12 points to The Netherlands. The winner of the Eurovision Songcontest 2024.
This is a masterpiece. Euro papa= Euro dad, because papa is dad in Dutch. A sad song with lyrics with a meaning, with a message, in a happy hardcore melody. A letter to his father who died when he was a 12 year old child. His mother past away a year later. He promised his father that he will be someday on the Eurovision Songcontest stage. His father told him that it is possible because there are no borders between the countries, and no limits to follow his dream. Borders and limitations are made by human. In every country he went, he felt the pain and grief of no having his parents. The fire symbolise letting go of the grief and pain, and the start of a new chapter in his live.

Bro, check this guy and his band!
They gave performances on lowlands (largest festival in The Netherlands, > 80.000 visitors every year!) in 2019 & 2023 on the “Alfa stage”!
Alfa stage is the largest stage, for only the biggest artists!
    He is NO joke!
Europapa has been produced with DJ Paul Elstak!

You where not overthinking it. This whole song is about to his father and about loosing him and a year later his mother. There is a also a reference to papaoutai. An other song about someone losing his father. The end however is about letting the feeling of loss go (the burning of the house symbolizes that) and about new beginnings (I believe this is symbolized by the chirping birds at the send).

According to Joost, his father is the one that taught him about what the unification of Europe meant. (Which seemed impossible after centuries of constant wars) So this song is a reminder of that unification on one hand, but it's also an homage to his father for that lesson.
And when Joost asked his father what borders are, his father answered by saying those are just some lines somebody made up, so we can all make our own world with our own borders.
For the past 14 years, the death of his parents was a very recurring theme in his art. The burning building at the end of the video symbolizes him moving on from that and find closing after this 14 year period of grief.

He mentions Belgian artist Stromae and his song Papaoutai, which is also about his dad not being there. If you haven’t listened to Stromae yet; you’re in for a treat.
A few interesting Dutch artists to check out: Altin Gün, De Staat, Dewolff, Pete Philly and Kyteman.

The sounds are early 2000's and some sounds 2010's But new, you know what i mean? And the beat when the people dancing crazy was called happy hardcore and was very popular in the 90's. The dance was called Hakken and the group was calling themselfs Gabbers. O yeah and the godfather of hardcore "DJ Paul ELsak" helpt with the (happy) hardcore beat. He is even in the car (in the clip), the bald guy in the car.
Joost Klein lost his father when he was only 12 and a year later his mother died. Song tribute to his parents, and a message to his father i have done it dad. He prommised his dad that he would be performing at the eurovision.

    Europe, let's come together
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    It's now or never
    I love you all
    Europapa, Europapa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Visit my friends in France
Or take a long walk to Vienna
I want to leave the Netherlands
    But my passport is gone
Fortunately don't need a visa to be with you
So take the bus to Poland, or the train to Berlin
I have no money for Paris, so use my imagination
Do you have a euro please? Say "merci" and "please"
I lost truly everything, except the time
So I am travelling every day because the world is mine
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa, hey
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Eu-ro-pa, hey
I'm in Germany but I'm so alone
I am in Italy but still I feel pain
    Am running from myself
Calling for help all day long
Yes I even give people money, but there is no one to help me
    I don't need "es-car-gots", don't need "fish 'n chips"
    Don't need "paella", no
I don't even really know what that is
Turn on the radio, I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai"
Won't stop until they say, "Yes, yes, he does that very well hey!"
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Europapa, Europapa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa, hey
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Eu-ro-pa, hey
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe, boy
    Hey
    Eu-ro-pa
At the end of the day
    We are all human beings
    My father once told me
It is a world without borders
    I miss you every day
    Is what I whisper secretly
    You see dаd
    I have liѕtened to you

Joost Klein dedicated this song to his father, who died when he was 12 years old due to cancer. His dad taught him that the world has no actual boundaries. His mother died a year later, when he was 13, due to cardiac arrest. Before his dad passed, Joost was already writing all kinds of stuff and promised one day he was going to go to Eurovision. He has gone through so many challenges in life, and it is a true inspiration to see how he deals with them.
