    Plumber here. Never use silicone to seal stuff like that because it'll be almost impossible to get it off late to repair leaks. Use syliconized acrylic caulk next time or plumbers puddy in the holes around the stems. Also, you should have left an uncaulked area on the very bottom of the trim ring to allow condensation and water to weep out if it gets behind that area. And one more thing I always put some plumbers grease on the stems and on the screws before putting the handles on so they don't corrode.

    Tip from the old time plumbers - the trim pieces were test fitted first and marked on the side that would go up. Plumber's putty was then packed into the side that was to go up, and the side to go down was left open. That allowed any water to come out the bottom, if the packing on the valve stem gave up.
